Band Is...(Marching) Band is...Band Is...4 years ago in Concrete Poetry More Like This
Marching out on the track, rain or shine
Keeping your chin up and staying in line
Holding your flute parallel to the ground
Hitting the drums, listening to the sound
Yelling your face off at each football game
Defending the band when your friends call it lame
Drawing the drum majors up on the board
Spinning down hallways when everyone's bored
Wearing the hats and the shiny black shoes
Being hit by a trombone and getting a bruise
Shoving the fluffy feathers into your hat
Being able to tell if your instrument's flat
Leaving lunch early to go off to Band
Fighting over who puts away the music stand
Memorizing songs and marching around
Wondering if you will ever sit down
Playing songs, trying to find the right beat
Wondering why you have sores on your feet
Gaming with band friends (especially Brawl)
Remembering the whistles and all the band calls
Knowing that your band is number one...
But most of all, Band is just having fun.

Its sweating and dehydrating and making perverted jokes; marching until 11 at night and waking up at 4 the next day to go to competition; living at the school because you have a music booster for a mother, spending all your free time working, getting there at 7 in the morning because you just arent good enough yet.
Its spending 7+ hours a day practicing; learning drills, practicing music, covering the basics, making your legs hurt (because that means youre doing it right), getting yelled at, yelling at others, measuring steps.
Its avoiding flags and making friends, repeating it over and over again until you can do it blindfolded while youre sleeping, learning that words like tonguing, blowing, and fingering arent funny when youre the one doing them and not in that way; learning dynamics and rhythms and key signatures.
Its trying not to get angry when people say its not a sport (and golf is?).

That I'll never skip,
Much music comes and goes,
But your song won't slip.
You're controlling the beat,
The rhythmic pulsing of my heart,
When we're close it races,
And it slows when we're apart.
Your beautiful song,
Washing away all my fears,
Never has such a tone,
Soared so gracefully around my ears.
Your harmony so precious,
It's become an addiction,
Please don't leave my ears alone,
This is my happy affliction.
You're my secret love,
No one else can hear what I do,
You just needed the right listener,
Someone who could appreciate you.
You're my perfect melody,
Not to be replaced by another,
We both had something missing,
And now we found each other.
