Almost profound, if it weren't about teapots.Life is a lot like a pot of tea, when all is said and done.Almost profound, if it weren't about teapots.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
You can be greedy and pour it as fast as you can, trying to get as much tea in as little time as possible,
but you will inevitably spill about half of it.
Now, if you slowly pour a little bit at a time, it may take a bit longer
but very seldom shall a drop be spilled
and by proxy more tea shall be saved from a misspent fate.
I have learned through trial and error to take care and patience
because tea, like all good things, is worth waiting for.

Iiiiit's contest time! All original literature welcome.
This is a speculative fiction contest—the technology requirement could cover steampunk, 'John Carter,' 'The Windup Girl,' 'Watchmen,' '2001: A Space Odyssey' or about anything else you can think of. The one thing that isn't permissible is magic.
That was a joke.
Your story must center around the development of a relationship between two entities.
Some things to consider:What kind of relationship is it? (No, "relationship" doesn't have to mean "romance.")Who/what is it between? Is the development positive/negative?
The relationship must be noticeably changed at the end.Distance/death don't count if they're still besties or whatever.I don't mean changed personalities. I mean a changed relationship.
Plausible but (currently) nonexistent technology must be integral to the development of this relationship.Time travel goes forward.Nothing goes faster than light, a

OKay, so I've noticed a disturbing trend among the DAers, and artists in general. I was discussing it with a new and particularly friendly watcher the other day, and it's come to my attention that artists are WAY TOO COMPETITIVE. I've seen artists get blasted out by other artists for ridiculous things such as
"Your art is WAY BETTER THAN MINE and it's NOT FAIR that yours is CHEAPER!!! YOU B STEELIN MAI BUSINESS SKANK RAISE YOUR PRICES OR ELSE"
Sorry, but some artists just don't care about money, and they shouldn't. I hate that art has turned into some huge money making ordeal. Yes, I try to make a small profit with commissions and the like, especially when I'm not making end's meet, but the majority of things I make that aren't for my own relaxation and happiness are gifts. Sometimes, I will hold a contest and the occasional kiriban. And while yes, I do have a job that consists solely of producing art for someone else

i notice, and have experienced countless times, that a lot of younger users on this site tend to do something akin to self depreciation when attempting to praise others work.
thats…really not ok. like really really not ok
im going to be using direct addressing pronouns “you” without actually referring to anyone specific, but, by you saying something like “oh ill never be as good as you” or “im so jealous of your work” or “i want your style/skills” in a directly envious and self depreciating tone, you are honestly doing NO ONE any favors. its rude, childish, and hurtful to say things like that, to both sides. you think i want to hear you talk down about yourself in an attempt to make me feel good? why would that make me feel g

I have a larger soapbox here.
I'm sorry but… people who keep bitching about alicorn/princess Twilight?
Are really goddamn irritating.
All I see is a bunch of whining. SO MUCH WHINING.
"BAWWWW, NOW SHE'S A PRINCESS!"
"BAAAAWW, NOW SHE HAS WINGS!"
"BAAWWW, I DON'T LIKE CHANGE!"
Fuck! Grow up.
My Little Pony was, and always has been, a cartoon made to sell toys. IT'S A GIANT COMMERCIAL. That is the entire reason it exists—GET OVER IT. Nevertheless, the writers do a damn good job working in all of Hasbro's marketing desires.
Besides, it was completely expected. For instance: A decent bit of FiM pulls inspiration from Sailor Moon. Annnnd guess what? Sailor Moon was a princess—who periodically "leveled up" and got things like wings.
Also, princesses are a marketing trend right now—of course Hasbro is going to cash in on that.
SickHe could hear it, the bloody figure walking behind him over nimble feet. Then his eyes were forced to close as cold, bony fingers covered his sight. And then she was gone, back into the sweet torments of his mind. And then, like venom, she left him on the floor, dead and strangely calm.
I had to get this out of my head.

Few words about art-thieves.Hi!Few words about art-thieves.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My dear watchers, I really appreciate your support when it comes to fight against art-thieves.
But I bet there are also many people whose thoughs can be interpretted like "why is she so hysterical about it?". Some people say, that the fact, that some photo is worth stealing, is a kind of compliment.
Ok, so let me present my point.
At first: why am I so unhappy about reposting of photos?
Because, pals, if somebody just reposts a photo without any change, it just gives totally open space to other people who would find the photos on his/her blog, taking it and posting it themselves. And because the first person did not credit the original author, they also do not credit the creator. The more people do that, the more times the photo is reposted. Always without credit. Sooner or later, it becomes a kind of "public" property and original author has almost no chance to effect this situation.
Do you know this photo? Honestly, EVERYBODY knows it. But do you know original author? Do you
Classic Who for "New Series only" fansI got this question from my buddy Robert on Facebook yesterday:Classic Who for "New Series only" fans3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"Any suggestions for a guy who is a diehard fan of the new series but feels overwhelmed by the idea of going back to a show of 20 plus years of episodes? I'm afraid I'll either not like them because my basis of comparison is a show made during a time when TV production values are the highest they've ever been, or, I'll love them and lock myself in a room until I've absorbed the show(what still exists) like I did with the new series (that was only 3 seasons in at the time)."
It echoed comments I've gotten from people here. So here's my answer to him, slightly edited and expanded:
Short answer: THE BRAIN OF MORBIUS; GENESIS OF THE DALEKS; THE SEEDS OF DOOM; THE TALONS OF WENG-CHIANG; CITY OF DEATH; EARTHSHOCK; THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI; REVELATION OF THE DALEKS; INFERNO (in that order) If ya wanna just dip your toe in the water, try those nine. I REALLY recommend starting with something like THE BRAIN OF M

I had no idea I was being so bitter - but when I thought about it I had to concede the point. And that made me start wondering why - Why did I feel so angry about the UK? What was my problem?
But here's the thing - Some 14 years ago I couldn't get any work. We had just had baby no.2, and I had done a run on 'Spawn: the Dark Ages', and had been suddenly replaced, along with the rest of the team on the book, because McFarlane wanted 'a change of direction'. And then there was literally no work. I went to NY to see DC and Marvel, but they had nothing. I pitched company after company, to no avail. I tried to get on illustration agency books, but was refused by all of them. I tried children's book publishers, Core Design, and other computer game companies. Nobody wanted me. Even Frank Frazetta criticized my art in his book 'Icon' - just to add insult to injury!
We ended up having to sel

PSA: Criticism and Critique.Telling somebody that their artwork looks like it was drawn "by a 5 year old" is not a critique. It's an insult.PSA: Criticism and Critique.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Telling somebody that they need to work on their anatomy without giving them any direction to go in to improve is not a critique. That is vague and unhelpful and frustrating.
Telling somebody that their style is simplistic and implying that that's a bad thing is not a critique. That is rude.
Telling somebody that their style is bad and should look more like this style over here is not a critique. That is like telling Burger King you hate their food and that they should make their food more like McDonald's. Just go to fucking McDonald's, you idiot.
You have no business giving anybody "critique" if this is how you think it works.
There is a difference between "style" and "undeveloped skill being called a style". There is a difference between "stylized anatomy" and "poor anatomy". There is such a thing as making an artistic choice and bending reality to improve the look of a pi

How far can you take the story?

The beautiful ones. There was a study repeatedly done by a scientist called John Calhoun on four pairs of mice, which he called the Mouse Universe. It was done in order to find out what would happen if everyone was overcrowded/overpopulated but otherwise had perfect lives, so they set up an architecturally perfect habitat for the mice to maximize space http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:CalhounJ.JPG , entertainment and privacy. Each mouse had its own apartment, large enough to contain several mice if they desired. The entrances were made to be easily blockaded, or opened, and an air unit blew clean, warm air into all parts of the unit. They set it to the perfect temperature, provided the most nutritionally balanced diet catered to the mice, and automated everything so that they would never run out of food, nesting material or water, it would never spoil, and the habitat was self-cleaning by mechanical means. The lights were timed, so there would be day and night. There were several of these chambers whichThe beautiful ones.2 years ago in Personal More Like This

August rain.Sometimes the best solution to becoming unstuck is finding the right teacher with the right words.August rain.8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Words are fickle things. Their meanings can change, their arrangement is essential and their scope narrow. Books can have too many words... creates a jumble. Adds to the confusion. Overthinking. Stuck in loops. Stuck in loops.
Enter: The Teacher.
With lessons that I can finally hear. That speak to me.
A catalyst to incinerate what I thought I knew. Burn the old ruts of thought to make way for the new. No knowledge is solid, it is always fluid. Learning is an organic process.
May the rain wash away the me I am now for the me I am becoming. May I have the serenity to remind myself to let go.
A spider's living hellOKay so I just went and made a pot of coffee, and noticed the strangest thing.A spider's living hell2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Inside the coffee container there were lots and lots of fine, nearly invisible spider webs with coffee grounds stuck all over them. Funny, they weren't there 6 hours ago. Upon closer inspection, I found a tiny spider the size of a popcorn kernel. Dead. It wasn't neatly curled up, but it looked kind of splayed and broken, just sitting there on top of the grounds completely undisturbed, legs in utter disarray.
And then I suddenly realize what must have happened to him.
As I previously made a pot of coffee, the spider looked upon the fragrant glory and thought he'd hop on in to have a splash around in the perfect hiding place. All went well as he rolled around, burying himself in the granules of joy. And then suddenly darkness slowly closes in. His 6 beady eyes stare up in bewilderment as the ring appeared, tightened, like the walls of his throat around his heart. His tiny fucking cell phone rang the Spiderman

Q.: When did you start drawing?
A.: I started drawing when I was a little child, I think when I was about 2 or 3 years old. Art has been my passion ever since I can remember. I started drawing digitally in the summer of 2009, when I got my tablet and Photoshop for my 15th birthday.
Q.: Who/What inspired you to start drawing or to not stop drawing?
A.: My mother was the one, who placed some sheets of paper and some colored pencils next to me, so she was the one, who got me into drawing. I also had several good friends, who liked art as much as I do and my older sister :iconPixieCold: is a passionate artist herself. Art kinda is a tradition in our family, because
