CONTEST Protector+Nightmare,RevisitedOh wait! Don't go! Wait! Wait for me!CONTEST Protector+Nightmare,Revisited1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Oh good! I caught you! I need to make sure you guys see this!
Well! I've decided that I'm going to do another contest! My second one. I had so much fun with my previous contest that I've been thinking so much about it to see what I can do! And I think I've finally decided on something.
This is going to be a contest with a very large time limit, but with nice prizes! There are two contests that you can participate in, with two separate prompts.
PROMPT ONE: THE PROTECTOR
There’s nothing more comforting knowing that there is someone that would lay down their lives to protect you, your rights, emotions, and feelings. A mother will protect her child, a soldier would protect his country, and a political hero would lay down their life to ensure citizens are guaranteed their human rights. Protectors are not necessarily literal, physical beings, but in times are often spiritual, religious, and

Activity vs. Community When combining millions of artists working with different media, style, experience level, etc. being here can become overwhelming and finding your "place" can seem almost impossible. Throughout the last few weeks I've noticed more and more people asking "how can I be more active?" and "how do I get involved in the community?"Activity vs. Community1 year ago in Personal More Like This
These are both the same question and completely different questions at the same time. Though the answers to both are quite similar if not the same the difference between activity and community is huge! We're going to cover the answers and difference to both of those in this article.
There are three basic ways to being active on dA and getting involved the community. Everything after this will actually lead right back to these three things.
Commenting: is the best and most effective way to particicpate in our community becaus

Tips for creating dark art
I have heard many people's opinions about dark art. What defines it? What's it's main features? There is many who think they create dark art, but others who tell them THAT isn't what dark art is. But is that fair? Is it up to us to decide what dark art is OR is it something we need to feel. Something that comes to every human in need and offers a cold a dark reality of comfort. Here are the opinions of some dark artists...
"Go beyond the cliché and open your mind. People think creating something dark means you have to stick to cemeteries, goth chicks, and muted tones, which is false! Embrace colour in your dark work. Use your emotions and use your art to explore the darker side of your soul. I have found some of my darkest pieces came from me sitting outside in the sunshine and simply remembering something. Such as how the sun

Creators Rights at ConventionsConventions have become big business in the last few years. More shows keep popping up, attendance keeps rising, and there's more money than ever being passed around as comics continue to merge with pop culture/big media/corporate sponsorships into what I've been calling Supershows.Creators Rights at Conventions3 months ago in Personal More Like This
For the most part, I think this is a great thing for the creators and our industry. While a few might miff at the thought of comics being intruded upon by other industries, it means more chances for starving artists to make money, more money for commissions and prints, and chances to travel to exotic locations that were never previously on our agenda.
More and more frequently, creators are being lured to shows all over the world with travel costs (at least partially) comped. When they arrive, they'll be met by capable handlers, lines of cheering fans, and fancy parties while they're given the brief whiff of stardom that's usually reserved for Mick Jagger.
But not always.
While many of my pro friends are ete

The longer you stay on deviantART and the more people you get to know, the more the wish to meet those people will grow.
Especially when people live close to you or when you are living in an area that is well populated it can be arranged easily to get to know some fellow deviants in real life as well. When it comes to meet deviants who live in a different country, maybe even a different continent it will be more of a challenge. But still not impossible.
If you just meet with a few other deviants it usually doesn't require much planning. You pick a date, a time and a place. If you are all from the same area, it won't require much preparation at all. You are all familiar with the region, you speak the same language and you know the locations there.
The bigger the meet will be and the more people will attend (especially if they are from different countries), this will be much mo

Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)To many people in comics, I only arrived a few years ago with Joe the Barbarian. Then came Hellblazer (completed in 2008 before I began working on Joe), American Vampire: SOTF, and finally Punk Rock Jesus. Once in a while someone will mention Off Road (an OGN I did with Oni back in 2004), but for the most part it seems like I've been published only these last few years when in fact I've been published professionally for a decade now.Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This isn't a plea to have everyone go back through my previous work--in fact, I'm glad that a lot of the books I've done over the years aren't on readers' radars. I'm proud of it all, but the books above are a nice, tight group of titles to be associated with. They're all in a similar brand, they're all recent, they all have good creators/publishers associated with them, and the artwork is mostly consistent. Go back further than that, and you'll see artwork that looks nothing like the stuff I'm doing these days. (Although Off Road still holds up to some de

Please share this if you like it by posting a journal or a poll linking to this. Spread the word and the awareness to both buyers and sellers!
I've been asked a couple times already about how I price my commissions. Often, I think it's because I tend to price my work higher than a lot of other artists, yet people are still willing to buy. I think this journal will sum things up quite nicely (from my personal viewpoints.)
A Brief Econ Class
So how do I price, then?Frequent Concerns
My philosophy for pricing art is actually best illustrated by the opening page of this chapter of AKB49 (a manga based off of popular idol group AKB48).
So what does this mean? "Because... it really is delicious" represents the idea that something can be sold for a higher price because demand is high. Time for a quick economics class!

so, this july i am starting death vigil, published by image/top cow. it will be a monthly series limited to three 8-issue arcs, so there is a definitive ending. with this i have learned some of the things about publishing independent comics, and i am planning a video with some tips after i summarize my experiences. hopefully it will prove helpful for others to get their stuff published
but apparently rule 1 is promote preorders. preorders are crucial for independent books as they define the print runs, and are crucial to the sucess of the book.. so.. as my far more experienced friends told me to do....
death vigil is preorderable ...pretty much in any place or webstore that carries US comics.
you can find an extensive preview to issue 1 and much more here

PE: Traditional ShadingTraditional ShadingPE: Traditional Shading1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Hello. This is iDJPanda on the topic of shading!
When I usually start into the shading process of something, I always struggle to see which kind of technique I can use to give the piece of art the type of wow that I want. But just like anything, there are MANY ways to do it! This can help you use different shading techniques for different textures. I'm gonna give you a few different ways you can shade (Try to shake it up! ). If you have any other ways you shade, please feel free to tell me!
One of my favorite, in this technique of shading, you go against what all elementary teachers told you. You scribble! When you shade like this, you'll come out with something that looks like this.
Using circular motions, you generate different shades. Spending more time, swirling makes the certain areas you want darker, and the less you swirl makes the other areas lighter.
DRAW IT AGAIN: Points Contest! Alright! Let's get this contest going!DRAW IT AGAIN: Points Contest!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
- Redraw an older piece of art! It must be in your DA gallery somewhere! The goal of the contest is to see who has made the most improvement over time!
- Maximum of 6 years old please! It would be too easy to beat a drawing from when you were 3. No newer than one year old!
- The redrawing must be newly made! No old redraws!
- Try to keep to the original style of the drawing! It will be hard to see improvements if you draw the same subject entirely different! Try to stay true to the original in your re-draw as much as possible! (If it's not colored, don't color it in the re-draw for the contest! You can of course, color it for yourself. )
The Committed Canvas:icontechgnotic:The Committed Canvas4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Tattooing has existed since the very beginnings of Neolithic human expression and has since those ancient beginnings continued to be a reliable flash indicator of personality type. There are those people who get tattoos and there those people who simply do not. Even though the social opprobrium for getting inked has greatly disappeared in recent years, and even though skin art has become almost boringly de rigueur amongst rock guitarists and other entertainers, there is still one element that separates the tattooed from the non-tattooed in terms of artistic appreciation: commitment.
Tattoos may be the first “interactive” art form. The art lover doesn’t just buy an artist’s artwork – he or she becomes one with artwork, he or she commits to becoming a living canvas for the artwork, he or she, by choosing the tattoo to be borne forever, shares authorship with the tattoo artist of the artwork. When inspiration is far to be found...We all get these anoying times when we really want to make something cool, get inspired and work that magic. We see everyone around us (online) do it, but how come we are not? When inspiration is far to be found...7 months ago in Personal More Like This
So we look for ways to get inspired, we ask around, find these usual answers: go watch a film, listen to music.. take a walk...
But even when we do that, we still end up stuck most of the time.
Part of the solution is knowing WHY we get stuck and this is my theory.
ADT - Attention Deficit Trait.
'Experiencing an inner frenzy of distractability, impatience, difficulty in setting priorities, staying focused and managing time. Those are our biggest enemies as they all end up cluttering your head and keeping you from spending quality focused time on a singular topic.
Everything we do now a days is based around multitasking and it is giving us a constant overdose of information. Let me elaborate.
How many of you travel daily by public transport and don't look away
