1993. Life was good. I had time on my hands so I bought some sycamore locally and made this chair. After I built and carved it I scorched it with a blowlamp, rubbed it down, stained it, sealed it with shellac and gave it seven or eight coats of wax.

I love old furniture, really old furniture. The basic design is loosely based on English oak chairs from around 1600 although the girl's face and kingfishers went a bit art nouveau-ish.

It's very heavy and very comfortable and looks totally out of place in the small, modern house we rent these days. :)

Please respect my copyright, thanks.

The jouhikko is a bowed lyre, related to welsh crwth and swedish talharpa, amongst others.

Body is oak, soundboard heat processed birch, bridge, the string extension piece and the neck reinforcement are ash, and the tuning pegs are beech.
Strings are horsehair. I used fir resin I collected myself for them.
The bow is just a nice piece of pine :)

Finish with iron oxide & linenseed oil, and after that a few layers with a mixture of tar, linseed oil and turpentine.

The white string is the melody string played free with fingers, the black ones are drones.

There's a few pieces that need refinement, like the badly designed string attachment in the extension piece. Now changing the tuning of any one string affects all the others too :/ So here I should have sticked more rigidly to historical examples.

The body shape is loosely based on several 19th century examples from the national Museum of Finland.

So this is my third mechanical Flash/Memory key & probably, in my opinion, my most successful so far.

It has however taken an age to finish (approx 10-12 hours) mainly due to the detail and having to harvest the pieces from the watches myself - I think I probably used parts from around 6 different pocket watches (from brand new ones to watches over 100 years old). The key is made out of purple heart & has approximately 26 Ruby's which look great when the key catches the light, & when the Keys plugged into a USB, it glows green from underneath the gears giving the key a good sense of movement.

Please note the gears on this key do not actually move.

This piece has sold but I have others available in my shop or can be ordered on commission.

This is an oldie, but a goodie. I carved this in 1989. I sold it at a Science Fiction Convention for a ridiculously small ammount. I still love it, and probably always will.

Cartoon: Nancy Janda drew the Phoenix, which was used with her permission. I drew the flame circle around him.
Plate: Walnut Hollow Farms.
Finish: Colored tung oil.
Date: 1989
