:iconestunt: Some thoughts from Matt (mattdanna)
With Valentine's Day right around the corner, the word "love" is in no short supply. Stores are trying to get you to buy everything from chocolates and jewelry to vacation getaways for that special someone in your life. As someone who's been notoriously single on Valentine's Day, the L word starts to sound like nails on chalkboard leading up to the days before February 14th. Nevertheless, I thought it would be neat to explore art depicting different types of love.
In Greek culture, there are several different words for "love": philía, storgē, agápe, and éros. The Greek language distinguishes the different ways "love" is used. Philía is the type of love and affection you feel with friends and community.

A white man said, "Colored people are not allowed here."
The black man turned around and stood up. He then said:
"Listen sir....when I was born I was BLACK "
"When I grew up I was BLACK, "
"When I'm sick I'm BLACK, "
"When I go in the sun I'm BLACK, "
"When I'm cold I'm BLACK, "
"When I die I'll be BLACK."
"But you sir."
"When you are born you're PINK".
"When you grow up you're WHITE, "
"When you're sick, you're GREEN, "
"When you go in the sun you turn RED, "
"When you're cold you turn BLUE, "
"And when you die you turn PURPLE.
"And you have the nerve to call me colored?"
The black man then sat back down and the white man walked away..
Put this on your page if you HATE racism.
My Funny Fan ArtI have a wicked sense of humor, and particularly when I'm feeling downtrodden or angry at the subpar condition of the world, it might unleash itself with a gleeful wrath. Recently I got a little fed up with the ascendancy and ubiquity of rather generic "fan art," and its success drowning out most other kinds of submissions here at DA, thus making it impossible for artists to get seen or have any hopes of selling their work. I decided to take matters into my own hands (or if not "matters" at least a drawing tablet), and lash out with funny fury at the fan art mentality, by making my own inferior brew of fan art. Over the course of a couple weeks I created 11 pieces, all deliberately horrendous in terms of anatomy, perspective, seemingly incidental unfortunate flaws, and other aesthetic barbarities. There were a few days where I was laughing so hard my stomach muscles got sore.My Funny Fan Art3 years ago in Personal More Like This

I'm not sure if this can really count as a tutorial because I feel I didn't take enough photos, but I thought I'd share how I made my wand for Harry Potter cosplay. It's made with things I had lying around at home. Miguel :iconmerkymerx: helped me out a lot with his suggestions!
I started with these A paintbrush, a hot glue/gluegun stick, some tape, a brown paper bag, and some foil. Paintbrushes are very good bases for wands because of the shape and material. This once I particularly fancied because of the beautiful color and finish of the handle.
The brush was too short by itself, so I had to extend the other end somehow. Feeling very silly, I stuck the hot glue stick into the head of the brush, right in the middle of the bristles, and taped it into place. Sadly I did not get a photo of how it looked then. I tore of a bit of the brown paper bag and wrapped it around the glue stick for added stability, and taped that into place as well. (Yo

A huge tribute to BBC 'Sherlock' Part IHi all, peeps!A huge tribute to BBC 'Sherlock' Part I3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Here we are, along with my new obsession: BBC "Sherlock".
I used to read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as a young girl, and as far as I remember I loved most of his works; since then, tho, and except for a few movies, I didn't have any chance to come over Sherlock anymore...
This new BBC TV series by Steven Moffat (whom we adore because he writes The Doctor too ) and Mark Gatiss just left me speechless. And stunned.
As they re-wrote the most famous originals by Sir Arthur to set them into a modern London, they did a stunningly amazing job. The scripts are perfect. The actors (Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and all the others) just *fit* the characters, and the characters just *fit* the story as they were naturally born to be there. The soundtrack is wonderful.
I just love how everything in this show is covered and conveyed with such a polished - and so British - elegance, whether it comes to humour or to tragedy or to sensitive issues (such as Sherlock'

Animation techniques and more Ghibli thoughtsIn my last journal I mentioned the strange effect of seeing super cartoony flat characters moving around in a hyper realistic world. There's actually a name for this, it's call the "masking effect" and it was quite elaborately detailed by Scott McCloud in his book "understanding comics."Animation techniques and more Ghibli thoughts4 years ago in Personal More Like This
In comics, frequently the main characters are portrayed as cartoony and simple, while backgrounds often get very detailed. The basic concept is pretty simple. The more cartoony a character is drawn, the more appealing and relatable it is to us as we can more easily imagine ourselves in the role. The more realistic something is, the less of a personal connection you have to it. This is why villains tend to be drawn more realistically, and heros more cartoony. But it goes beyond just the characters... the environment also is affected.
If a person in a cartoon picks up a sword and starts swinging it around, the sword becomes an extension of their body and since it's animated, it becomes a drawn thing whic

The Ever Evolving Icon
What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

Do you know how to sketch human figures but do you want to refine your anatomy skills? Or do you not know anatomy at all and you are tired to trust your imagination? Did you notice you create disproportions in your drawings?
If you are aspiring artists and you already have your own style, you might as well believe you have no need of a guide, but you are wrong. Before exaggerating human proportions and begin to have your own style, you first have to know the basics.
This little guide is the result of an accurate research and 5 years of high school of art, and it's created for all those who want to learn something new or just make a useful review.
For those who have already studied art, my suggestion is to go to step 6 or trying to repeat all steps in Digital format.
First of all, if you want to learn faster you should draw using traditi
