The grubs lay snug in their craters, content to be alive and to have survived the first culling. They cooed and giggled and cried, unconcerned about the adult Trolls that stood at a distance and held back all manner of pure white beasts, waiting in anticipation.
It was time for the grubs to find their lusus.
Or, rather, it was time for the lusi to choose their grubs.
A certain sect of people waited with bated breath. Among the multi-colored grubs, hidden amongst the rust bloods, lay a small male grub with blood the color of cherry candy.
It was a miracle he'd survived. It was a miracle he was born. Now, all that was left to do was see if a lusus would choose him.
They had prepared for this day as well as they possibly could. Their savior, the descendent of the Sufferer, needed a proper troll upbringing and they had bred a lusus to be the perfect guardian: strong and fierce, to protect the tiny grub from those who would wish to harm him, but caring and protec

A Snow Lit Night
In mid winter when the snow is lightly falling in the sun set sky. Two people are walking down the side walk in a park near the girls house. The boy is named Dave and the girl is named Jade. Jade's brother John is Dave's best friend. Today Dave found the strength to ask his long time friend, Jade, to take a walk with him. She put on her blue dress, red coat, boots, blue scarf and matching hat when he showed up to walk with her.
At first they were both quiet, Dave's palms sweated in his gloves. As the sun settled they walked along the road and as it seemed like an hour and after some random chatter Jade linked her arm with his and leaned her head on his shoulder. He glanced at her and smiled as they kept walking.
"Why did you ask me to walk with you?" Jade finally asked after several blocks of walking in the Seattle lights.
"Oh, I don't know. I guess I just wanted to talk to you without John around," Dave answered back. He looked straight while walking, his b

"Then why won't you assuage my curiousity, Strider?" Jake asks, and you refuse to look at him.
"Jake, please just leave me alone." You say, forehead bumping against the car's window.
"You're acting off tonight." Jake comments, settling back into his seat and looking at the back of Jane's seat.
Things had been much quieter in the car once Roxy'd been dropped off, but it was nearly too quiet now. Jane had fallen asleep and it was just you and Jake, the latter pestering you to death about your behavior.

Yes. He's broken. His eyes are dull and stare blankly ahead. There's nothing about him that seems to recognize emotion. He looks up at you, silent, almost void of life. You see his eyes blink, once, twice, three times, before you stand up and turn to the man behind you.
"Are you sure, there are plenty of better trolls, I assure you. This one's slated for slaughter in a day. Here," he placed a hand on your back, "let me show you to some other trolls, I'm sure you'll find another."
You disagree but follow him anyways. You pass by rows and rows of cages. Some are better kept then others, you notice the color swatches by each number, the nicer cages appear to belong to the purple or blue swatches. There are trolls of all ages and builds. Most walk up and greet you, saying brief things like "hello," or "hi mister." You nod and watch each one, seeing the life still flicker in their eyes. There's one section you pass by in a

I love you so much.
Don't tell anyone, though.
Head fuzzy, delirious. My skin feels warm and tingly with you, did you know that? Oh, you must know that. You're my most favorite thing in the world. Favorite, favorite, favorite.
But, please, don't tell anyone.
I hope you don't mind, but I'm just gonna fall off this cliff and into you. I'm gonna drown myself in you. I'm gonna lock the doors, close the blinds. I'll hide under the blankets and hold you tight.
But don't tell anyone.
I won't need a nightlight with you around. I don't need to eat or sleep with you. Oh god, how do you do that? How could I possibly live without you? You're so great, feels so great.
Seriously, don't tell anyone.
Oh, don't look at me like that. Our love has to be a secret. It's almost like an affair, ya know? Nobody else would understand what we have. Nobody else would accept it.

Until you grasp the nearest one
But how can you check
To see if it is sweet?
Looks alone will not reveal this to you
Only by biting
Into its soft flesh
Can you discover its secrets
For its skin can conceal
A bitter, rotten taste within
And once bitten
You cannot spit it out
Until all of the bitter fruit is devoured
But the fruit
Can also be sweet
Sweeter than life itself
So choose wisely
Take a bite

Sometimes you like to pretend you aren't blind.
You like to close your hollow eye sockets, take deep breaths, and imagine that you are on Prospit, with your friends.
Sometimes, instead, you just lapse into memories. Like that one time you and Karkat laughed hysterically, slumped over one another after Eridan stepped on a horn, tripped over the one-wheel device and fell on his face.
You remember back to fun days spent excavating with Aradia, back when you were just barely five sweeps old. You remember finding the skeleton of what you both instantly assumed to be an ancient scalebeast, but ended up being regular troll remains.
You remember when Karkat came over to your hive for the first time and you kicked his ass at every game you owned, laughed through his tantrum, and gave him a big hug when he apologized for almost wrecking your mainframe. You liked this memory the best, because you alway

You're on either your fourth or seventh drink when you hear a tap at the door. You sigh and go to stand up - whoa. Take a minute to steady yourself against the counter (and wonder who the hell goes clubbing at four-thirteen in the morning?) before you begin to make your way to the door.
You trip over something you can't quite see in the half-darkness and catch yourself on the door frame. There's another tap at the door, and you heave another sigh. Why today, of all days? "We're closed. Go away."
"Dave? It's me, Jade." You freeze, blinking. Jade? That Jade? "Um, could you let me in? Please?" There's a tremor in her voice that says sooner would be much better than later.
You open the door, and with a burst of hot night air in your face there she is, looking exactly the same as always. Long dark hair, brown eyes peering out from behind enormous glasses, and that grin with just a hint of a cute overbit

Dave looked up from the tv screen briefly, glancing to where Bro stood hunched over a box on the kitchen table. The elder Strider's body obscured most of the small brown package and what it contained, igniting his interest. Curious, Dave humored him.
"What is it? A new sex toy for your smuppets?"
He heard Bro snort as he flit his eyes back to the screen to resume his game. The buttons clicked out an odd beat as he depressed them beneath his fingers, expertely directing his player around the course.
"Not even. If it'd be used on anyone, it'd be used on you."
Dave stopped in the middle of his sick grind to pause the game and look over the futon. Bro was still concealing the package on the table with his body, filling Dave with a a wary sense of curiosity. He could hear Bro laugh at his reaction and knew that his brother was purposefully blocking the view of whatever mystery item he'd gotten in the mail to either annoy him or set him on edge.
It did both.

Her Imperious Condescension entered the battery hold of her ship, a place she'd recently taken a habit to visiting with an increased frequency. She may have pondered more deeply the meaning of her fascination with her newest Helmsman, if she had been someone who had to worry about someone above her making a judgment call and culling her on the spot. But hell, she was the queen of queens, the Empress of the most aggressively invasive species in the universe, she could do whatever she pleased and continue skewering anyone who took issue.
