my body relaxes against the trunk
of the giant redwood tree.
The world-candle shines down on me,
bestowing blessings upon my
holy eagle-feast. Fran leans down
and shares her breath,
lips pressed against lips.
I smile up at her, a warrior's gaze,
hiding my apprehension.
My attention is diverted to the side,
and I tilt my head to listen to
the sounds of tree-slaughter.
I fly on Muninn's wings back to
the night of my reckoning.
I was once a killer of boughs,
indiscriminately cutting down
old and young, a feast of woodpeckers
between them and me.
I won every day, felling them
in rows and in piles, creating
great corpses of cellulose
until my great weapon slipped
and dug deeply into my thigh.
Now a stump remains where
my leg once held me, and
I am half-mad with pain to this day.
It seems my foes had the last laugh.
To honor the memory of the lichen-fodder,
I now find myself chained to the oldest
redwood in California, protesting m

hands cold, soft, and gentle as
she tugs the metal tight.
"Stay cool, my sweet," she whispers
in her musical voice, as she makes sure
I'm as comfortable as possible.
She leans down for a kiss, readjusting
the chains a final time and leaving
the backpack of supplies within reach.
I smile up at her, heart hammering in my chest
but a smile on my face, radiating confidence.
She turns to go and I watch her leave.
The other supporters drift away
in ones and twos, and finally there's silence.
I sigh and lean back, closing my good eye.
I reach up and adjust my eyepatch, covering the hole
