This painting is based on the idea and creation of Tyrian Purple, a pigment that was made of cannibalistic snails. Their goo was the desirable ingredient. At first it was yellow/golden but as soon it was touched by the sun it turned into a deep red.
In the medieval ages this reaction was connected to the light of God. Since the sun was the highest light form and power and gold the most precious, hence godly, colour, Tyrian purple was a creation by god.
