Dark spots in type designType design is all about balancing the black versus white to create a consistent texture. One of the—perhaps more obscure—principles of creating well balanced type is a consistent stroke weight in certain areas—particularly in the joins. This is true even for simple geometric typefaces of which you probably wouldn't expect it if you're not familiar with dark spots.Dark spots in type design3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Dark spots occur in places where two strokes meet and this is particularly true when two strokes meet at a sharp angle. When two strokes meet there is a weight build-up which should be optically adjusted. The letter 'M' for example usually has three dark spots, one for each bend. Adding so-called ink traps [picture below] can get rid of these dark spots but it's quite an obtrusive method. essentially you add an extra vector point in the narrow negative space area and simply widen the area to give the black room to "breathe".
Ink traps are mainly reserved for two things:

I'm begging you.
And I constantly find myself worrying that I have been one or will be one, but so far I think I've done well...
When I was still in high school.. When Thomas and my mom were still alive.. When I was still Agnostic.. When I still had them as friends, we went to a flea market.
Tamara, Caleb, and I were walking around together while my mom and dad were looking at things in another area of the flea market. Tamara and I spotted a bumper sticker on the back of one of the cars that was anti-abortion and we were talking about it and how we liked it. The man running about selling things in front of it apparently had heard us and asked us about it. "So you're admirin' my bumper stickers, eh?" and Tamara, Caleb, and I politely smiled and nodded and told him which one had caught our eyes.
And then he went bat-crap crazy.
He somehow turned a simple thing into a fire and brimstone sermon and began spieling on the religious undertones of the an

Send me Sci-fi/Space Art DD SuggestionsPlease help spread the word by adding this Blog to your FavsSend me Sci-fi/Space Art DD Suggestions3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I have just recently received the opportunity to become the "Science Fiction and Space Art" Community Volunteer Gallery Moderator here on deviantART.
I am looking for "Science Fiction and Space Art" deviations to feature as Daily Deviations, and you can help.
If you know of any submissions that you think should gain more exposure and be Featured as a Daily Deviation,
and they are "Science Fiction and/or Space Art"related, send me a DD Suggestion via note.
I have info on my front page regarding how to suggest a DD if you have any questions.
I would prefer suggestions for artists that have less exposure and little to no previous DD's,
but I am not against awarding a Daily Deviation to worthy art from a more well known and decorated artist.
I simply want to try to focus on putting a spotlight on lesser known artists that have amazing art to share, so that their work ma

What is a Daily Deviation?
The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on deviantART.
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
The staff/volunteer members responsible for selecting submissions for the daily feature often are open to suggestions and individual community members may direct their attention by noting the appropriate Community Volunteer or staff member with a direct link to the deviation which you are suggesting and a brief description about why you think the work in question should be featured.

What If Jesus Meant All That Stuff? From Esquire November 18, 2009 : http://www.esquire.com/features/best-and-brightest-2009/shane-claiborne-1209What If Jesus Meant All That Stuff?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This radical Christian's ministry for the poor, The Simple Way, has gotten him in some trouble with his fellow Evangelicals. We asked him to address those who don't believe.
By Shane Claiborne
To all my nonbelieving, sort-of-believing, and used-to-be-believing friends: I feel like I should begin with a confession. I am sorry that so often the biggest obstacle to God has been Christians. Christians who have had so much to say with our mouths and so little to show with our lives. I am sorry that so often we have forgotten the Christ of our Christianity.
Forgive us. Forgive us for the embarrassing things we have done in the name of God.
The other night I headed into downtown Philly for a stroll with some friends from out of town. We walked down to Penn's Landing along the river, where there are street performers, artists, musicians. We passed a great magicia

You were created to be God's belovedJesus loves you apart from your actions. Yes, it is good to do good things. And Jesus wants to be involved in every aspect of your life, so part of your relationship with Him is to enjoy working side by side with Him in your ministry and whatever He has given you to do. But know that even if you never did any work for Him, He would still love you and care for you and be part of your life. You were created to be God's beloved3 years ago in Personal More Like This
You are a child of God because of what Jesus accomplished for you. Not because of anything you accomplished on your own. Some people worry and feel bad because they know they are supposed to be involved in ministering to others somehow, but they don't feel like they are living up to their full potential, or maybe they don't feel like they are accomplishing anything for God at all, and so they feel like maybe God is angry at them for not doing what they are supposed to do. But Jesus died so that you could have eternal life (John 3:16), Jesus died so that you could have a relationship with Hi
The Plagues I LOVE the movie, Prince of Egypt. I know a lot of Christians find this film to have too much artistic freedom and to be lacking in Biblical accuracy, but I have found time and time again, value in this cartoon. The Plagues1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I love musicals and operas, because a story told partly or fully with song, has something especially powerful about it. Music automatically makes us feel things, so well a composed song can be very moving, but adding meaningful and deep lyrics with the right music can change a song from moving, to life changing. God created music, He knew what He was doing. There's something so mysterious and supernatural about the power of music.
I say all this because I was listening to the soundtrack of Prince of Egypt recently, something I do often with my little sister. [We LOVE this movie- serusly.] My all-time favorite song off the soundtrack is The Plagues. If you've never seen the movie before [though I doubt it] it includes Moses and Ramseys singing back and forth to each other.

Life is Beautiful...Isn't it?Life is Beautiful...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
There are magical moments in life where I get the opportunity to remember that I'm nothing but an insignificant living being among 8 billion others.. on a planet among 8 in a solar system among billions in a galaxy among trillions and all in one universe-- possibly among others?-- where whether or not I died, would hardly leave a mark even in the face of my own city.
The world goes on without you.
Yet I once realized, that a meaning in life, is to give life a meaning.
Live your dreams! You only live once.
Don't do idiotic dares for the sake of saying you did them-- go tell that cute boy or girl you like them!
Go tell the world your name!
Why must everything be over after one failure..?
Sure, the humiliation of having everyone look down upon you is torture itself... but when you get back up and show everyone that you're somebody, it won't be you who'd be ashamed for not realizing your potential sooner-- but them!

Or, Two O'Clock
A funny thing happened while I was Skyping my parents one night. I was talking to them in Chinese when instead of saying "liang dian" for "two o'clock," I said, "er dian" (二点) instead of "liang dian" (两点). My parents and my sister ended up having a pretty good laugh out of that, and I was totally embarrassed. For those who do not know, "er" is only used to refer to the number itself, while "liang" is used for counting. A grade school mistake, basically.
Although I have been blessed with the ability to speak, read, and write Chinese, sometimes I find myself wishing that I could do it with complete fluency. No more of these awkward phrasings and slipups, or making do with limited vocabulary. But I suppose I'm luckier than others.
Chinese was my first language in both speaking and reading, although I was born in the US. Being that my dad was a poor PhD student at USC, I didn't exactly have very many toys. My mom decided to

Women in ChristI heard a Pastor say recently that Adam was set over Eve in the garden before the Fall, and that it was what God intended, but I've been reading and thinking about this. Man wasn't set above woman until after the serpent, Eve, and Adam, were cursed. The Bible talks about making a helper for man. That Adam couldn't find a suitable helper in the garden. Although Eve was created to be that helper, she was not created lower than Adam. Just as husband and wife are to "submit unto one another," Adam was expected to be as much a helper to Eve as she would be to him. The Prophet in the Bible who's writings were and are used as an example of the helper a wife is to be to her husband, was a man, Ezra. After the Fall and the curses, then man was set above woman in marriage as a part of her curse. Man's curse was to have to work to survive. Men don't deserve that position above their wife because they're male, they've been given that responsibility to protect and provide and guide. POKET PARTY (book) UPDATEI hope you had a wonderful Christmas and new year~ Here is an update for pre-order-ers !! Poket party is ready to be shipped.POKET PARTY (book) UPDATE4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I will be sending them in batches (around 45 to 50 at a time). I'll keep this page updated as to which orders I have sent and not so, etc.
My trips to the post office for those batches respectively will be on the 11th, 14th, 17th and 20th. It's safer to not post all at once and this will give me enough time to rest in between since I'll have to pack everything / fill in forms :3c
As soon as I pack your order for the batch, I'll contact you checking your address again! I will be keeping hold of your copy no matter what until I get your OK to post it. It's better to be safe than sorry and it has been a period of time
The average it takes to arrive from around the world is a week or two! Though this may take longer or shorter, post has a mind of it's own \o/ I really hope you do enjoy the book!
I'm happy if you are interested i
A bit of a ramble from me to youHello everyone! Long time no see.A bit of a ramble from me to you4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm going to take this time to reflect on some things.
I was talking to Moorina and she inspired me to write this in detail and share with you all ^^
I've been doing doujin work and publishing in Japan for 4 years now... looking back, there has been a ton of sacrifices and bad decisions to be made. My life in general was kinda weird.
This is quite personal, but I though I'd share my life/experience with you guys.
My family was never well off. A lot of our friends don't know of our situation, of course. Our mother was gambling every single day and our father was never home. Mom would take all day looking around the house for hidden cash (stashed from my dad) while dad goes out to play pool with his friends. Our family borrows money from relatives and that's how we get by. If you go back to my journal entries from 2004, those were the days where we had to go to the internet cafe just to use the net because we couldn't afford to pay for anything per month

Project Educate: Interview with Namie-kunAs part of Project Educate, some questions were put together for some of the wonderful Manga/Anime artists in our community. And so, today I bring you the first of the interviews!Project Educate: Interview with Namie-kun4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Today we feature Namie-kun
1. To start off, what is your favorite medium and tools to use?
My favorite would definetely be my laptop and tablet! Less mess, no scanners to fiddle with, easier to bring snacks and I can watch anime and read manga on the side ahah~; Still, the feel of pencil on paper is nothing technology can beat!
2. When you draw, do you plan everything out first, or do you just see where the drawing takes you?
I find that drawing without plans and leaping before looking is more fun. When I plan sometimes pictures don't come out the way I expected it to be; However sometimes it comes out even better! It's really on the whim whether I plan or not~
3. On average, how long do you spend on a drawing?
A Picture I upload onto DA would
