Defining Street Photography
by Dave Beckerman
Most types of photography can be easily defined by their subjects. A wedding photographer takes pictures of weddings. A portrait photographer poses someone and takes their picture. The nature photographer covers a wide area, but it is easy to categorize.
Street photography is difficult to define because it can encompass just about any subject.
If I were to ask you to name a few famous street photographers, you might pick, Garry Winnograd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or maybe Robert Frank. But if I asked you to define street photography – that would be more difficult. You might say that street photography is candid pictures of strangers on the street. That might be a good start, but it doesn’t really describe street photography.
To start with, street photography doesn’t need to be done on

It is absolutely imperative that we protect, preserve and pass on this genetic heritage for man and every other living thing in as good a condition as we received it.

PAX DisappointmentI don't enjoy Penny Arcade. I have my reasons, after all we all have things we like and don't like. For the same reason I'm cool with people disliking my work (providing they leave me alone about it), I'm cool with letting people enjoy Penny Arcade while I continue to ignore it's existence.PAX Disappointment2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But Penny Arcade isn't just a comic strip anymore. It's also a convention. A BIG convention that a lot of comic and gaming industry people flock to. It's become one of the bigger conventions in America outside of Wizard World and San Diego/New York Comic Con.
Recently Penny Arcade did a joke with rape as the punchline. That's downright offensive and disgusting in my books and I'm on the side of a lot of people who found it equally offensive and insensitive. But freedom of speech and all that, it's not a series I enjoy so I normally wouldn't even be talking about it...
Except that things kinda escalated and took a turn for the worse...
First the Penny Arcade people started mocking rape victims and an

Yes, comments are disabled on her YouTube video. But honestly, why does everyone see this as a "problem?" I know it's common wisdom to assume that if you hide comments you're "scared" of receiving criticism or some other bullshit, but think beyond that please.
1) Comments enabled would just allow hate speech and actual sexism to persist because the internet has already determined that everyone hates Anita. No matter how thoughtful or constructive your criticisms might be, YouTube's 500 character limit isn't the best place to give it, plus it would be drowned out by the trolls and haters spewing negativity.
2) Her videos are also meant more as a teaching tool, not a vlog series, and as such are potentially going to be used in classrooms. Probably a good idea to keep nasty comments of homophobia, racism, sexism, etc off of the main source of the video. I think that's backed up beautifully by having her tell parents to preview the

"Is Photography Art?
This week the Guardian asks Is Photography Art? Now this is an interesting question and I already know my stance on it, Photography, to me - IS art. It can't not be art. It's creation, creativity, capturing, preserving - but it's Art. I'd be interested to see who agrees with this and who would say no to the Guardian's question - and why. So let's get thinking about it and debate it in the comments on this article...One commenter on the Guardian Article said the following..."Photography is definitely not art. In my opinion it's something way more beautiful and profound."

We're so excited to announce two amazing pieces of news.
Firstly, we have a premiere date! And it's sooner than you think! The premiere of Korra will be on Nickelodeon in exactly 1 month: Saturday, April 14th at 11am. Get ready for some action-packed bending and the start of an epic new saga.
Secondly, if you haven't already heard, we are proud to announce the new official title of the show is simply The Legend of Korra
Missing the PointI've been noticing a trend lately where people seem to deliberately be missing the point behind stuff in order to complain. I used to think it was just me, as I watched people write up lengthy articles nitpicking and "debunking" a comic I made because they simply missed the point, but I've started seeing it happening to other people too.Missing the Point3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Recently over on The Oatmeal, artist Matthew Inman made a joke about guy gamers vs girl gamers. The joke was pretty simple: A guy gamer makes a mistake and gets bitched out by his fellow teammates online. Contrast to that, a girl gamer makes a mistake and her fellow teammates try to comfort her, tell her she's doing great, and make suggestive comments about hooking up. To me the joke was clear, guys treat girls differently online. However, that's not how the rest of the internet saw it...
From what I've read of the whole Oatmeal flare up, the reasons for the hate seem grounded in the fact he depicted the girl as blond and bubbly (ie: stupid) and not as

The Photographers Guide : Taking Quality PhotosThe camera is just a tool, it's not magical. You don't even need a DSLR to be a photographer. Anyone can take a picture on any device, and it be considered art. It is how you do this that most effects your outcome. For example, take me. I don't own a dedicated camera - used my camera phone - the Nokia N8 - for each and every photograph i have clicked that is in my gallery. Sounds odd ? Well its the truth. Pretend your pet is a star, award it a prize, and take a photo including pet and prize.
You could give your cat, dog, guinea pig, bunny, etc. something your pet loves (a treat, a toy, ...) or something we would consider valuable (a trophy, a gem, money, ...). In case you don't have a pet, you're allowed to photograph a cuddly animal or an animal toy instead. Don't forget the prize and be creative!
You are free to interpret this prompt as needed.
All photos must be new, and specifically taken for this challenge.
Leave a comment in this journal with a link to your photograph.
The deadline is March 13 at 11:59 PM PST.

Black and White Mindset? After the government shutdown post I made yesterday I started thinking about something... Is it at all possible that the reason why internet opinions and interactions are so blindly polarizing and extreme is because the American political system is so polarizing and extreme? Could the reason discourse online is so black and white be a result of being seeped in such black and white political mindsets for so long that we have difficulty breaking out of the mold?Black and White Mindset?2 years ago in Personal More Like This

What do we need to shoot a Street picture?
1. A camera
Whatever kind of a camera is good. Either it is a ridiculously expensive rangefinder or an unbelievably cheap point and shoot compact. Either it shoots digital or it shoots film. Either it weighs a ton or it weighs few grams. ANY camera is fine as long as you have it with you.
2. A public place
This can be out in the streets or at the beach or inside a hotel's lounge or in a diner place or inside a supermarket or a mall or a school or whatever PUBLIC place. This public place must be visible in our picture. And things must be happening in this public place.
Exactly, people! We need people in candid situations. Definition of "candid" from Merriam-Webster's online dictionary: "subjects acting naturally or spontaneously without being posed" Definition of "candid" from Wikipedia: Candid photography is best described as un-

is an old idea of mine which has its roots in the The-Yard-Collective group, long before it was even a group. Older deviants remember the time when groups were clubs. I started posting this weekly feature back then, every Friday afternoon, showcasing 7 street shots that had been submitted to the club and had caught my attention during the past week. The feature lasted for a long time, untill I left dA for personal reasons for few months. When I got back in dA and wore the Street CV hat, the idea of reviving this weekly feature came up again vividly. This time my intention was to showcase and promote street shots from all over deviantArt.
Till now, 22 FNSS have been posted, you can find them in my personal account profile page. They average over 1000 pageviews each, and as I've been told by several fellow street shooters, it's a feature worth waiting for, every Friday afternoon. In every FNSS

Time to get away from it allWell March and April are always my busiest months for work and this year was no different. I have come out the other side now and my work time has returned to something like normal. At this time of year I always take a week out or I would end up becoming a homicidal maniac. Now is the time for me to get myself back into shape by taking my weary body somewhere I love. Next weekend I am heading for the Isle Of Skye where I will be spending a week recharging my batteries and sharpening my photographic muscles. I will also be getting on to a horse for the first time. I have arranged to go trekking while I am there. As well as the horse riding I am planning on climbing Blaven. My nemesis. This is the mountain I so nearly climbed two years ago but failed because I took a wrong turn about half way up but didn't realise until I was only 50 meters from the top. This year I aim to get it right. I will be going out on a RIB to see if I can find some dolphins and puffins. I will be going intTime to get away from it all1 year ago in Personal More Like This
