Retro Future: The Future That Never Was!
Personal Hovercrafts? Vacations in Space? Eye-scanning billboards? For years, people have been fascinated by what life might look like in the future. Perhaps no era's imagery was as dedicated to visualizing the future as the time period spanning the 1940's-1970's. Many of the popular magazines and newspapers of the day devoted hundreds of pages to describing the great advances in science and technology that were always just around the corner. See the Popular Mechanics and Popular Science archives for yourself here and here. This fascination expanded well beyond print, moving into film (2001: A Space Odyssey), TV (The Jetsons), and even

Please spread the word:
If you click a link that directs you through the deviantART "There Be Monsters Out There" outgoing link page and you unexpectedly return back to deviantART while logged out, check the URL of where you are before entering any of your details.
The proper URL for the actual deviantART login page is: deviantart.com/users/login. (Note that there is nothing between "deviantart" and "com" except for a "dot.")
If you find yourself unexpectedly logged out after clicking an offsite link, immediately check the URL to see if anything extra has been added -- this would indicate that you are in fact on a third-party website masquerading as deviantART. For example, if the URL reads something like deviantart.[som

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we just launched a brand new version of the mobile site to Beta Testers! The site is officially supported in mobile browsers on the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.
For a very long time, we've been running two versions of the deviantART website: the desktop version, and the mobile version—and the latter has fallen behind.
As we all know, the previous mobile site was missing a lot of major features. Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile sit

Creative CommonHello Everyone,Creative Common3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have decided to change the way I see my work on deviantArt, which result in a change of copyright.
Now almost all my works have a Creative Common copyright.
This means you are now free to modify and redistribute my work, as long at it's not for commercial use, and as long as you share it with the same copyright.
You also don't have to ask me about it nor send me a link of your release.
Now I must admit that my endless curiosity would enjoy if you send me a link to your results. Seeing my works being used on screenshots as always be a joy to me, and now I'll enjoy your modifications.
Some of you may be surprised by such a change after all my (foolish) fights... I'm ready to hear any angry feedback you may have.
The stupidity of others makes me realize mine...

New deviantART ThumbnailsIn the weekly Site Updates, we've been telling you all about the changes that have been launched to deviantART, getting your feedback, and reporting all the bugs that have been fixed.New deviantART Thumbnails3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
This change is a little different, since it involves a feature that has been in place for a long time. We think it deserves an announcement of its own, ahead of time.
The current deviantART thumbnails (the smaller versions of deviations) have served the community well for years; however, there's always room for improvement.
Some of the problems with existing thumbnails are: they leave a lot of blank space around them, there isn't a lot of room for text for literature deviations, and the thumbnails don't present very tall/wide images well.
The New Thumbnails
Now, we've created a new style of thumbnail, which hopes to solve a lot of these problems.
We've made all thumbnails bigger! We're showing them in tidier row

The chaptered comic strip, has been collected into a 100-page graphic novel – and to the still-uninitiated:
It is not quite like anything you’ve probably ever seen before. The story follows “Zee Captain” and his sidekicks as they amble through a post-apocalyptic landscape. And while that hardly seems new and different, it’s the unusually superlative graphic quality of the comic cells and the Monty Pythonesque dialogues and leaps of logic that can become quite mesmerizing. Zee Captain, his face hidden by a gas mask that gives him a Darth Vaderish look, wears what looks like a Soviet Red Army uniform from WWII, and the strip does have nourish WWII feel. It’s as if the nuclear holocaust on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had never ended and spread to every major city on Earth. But

New! Cubism Messenger Bag Design Challenge!New! Cubism Messenger Bag Design Challenge!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
What comes to mind when you hear the name Pablo Picasso? That’s right, it’s time to break it down, Cubism-style! For the first time ever, we are hosting a Messenger Bag Design Challenge! We want you to create an original design for the flap of the bag in the style of Cubism.
For this challenge, we are defining Cubism as an art style in which instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from multiple viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often, the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create a shallow ambiguous space.
Your design should appear on the flap of the bag (below the zipper), using only <

Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership. (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical proce
When did we decide that......the best way to view a GUI is on an angle, mocked up on an iPhone screen, with epically shallow depth of field? When did we decide that...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I don't care whether or not it's an app designed FOR the iPhone. If you take a photo of an iPhone on an angle with low DoF, absolutely ANYTHING will look good on it, even a pure white screen. I shit you not. The details and reflections in the phone's body make up at least 90% of the visual satisfaction, completely taking focus away from the actual GUI. "But it shows how it would look in the real world." No mate it doesn't. My human eyes don't have the DoF of an expensive Canon macro lens, nor do I use my phone holding it at a 45 degree angle, and sat in the middle of a professionally lit photography studio. When I buy food, I don't need to see a picture of somebody eating it.
On the flip side to making otherwise hideous designs look like the most amazing thing ever, a photo mock up also makes truly beautiful design look like crap. If you've spent days on end hammering away

The Enemy at the Gates, the “Other”, forever lurking in the darkness and plotting an invasion most evil and an enslavement most hideous, is probably the original seminal “narrative” that was born when humans first acq

We just released a new feature to Beta Testers that adds more context to the experience of viewing artwork on deviantART. You'll now find comment counts underneath the thumbnails of deviations -- they can be seen when browsing or searching art, and also display in your Message Center. We hope this feature will help bring to light the fact that there is a whole world of activity that takes place behind thumbnails. In some cases, when a thumbnail displays many comments, it can be a trigger to join the discussion. Whi
A Valentine Birthday Wish from +SpyedAll of my birthdays have always been about stuff. Stuff I don't want, stuff I definitely don't need. I'm surrounded by very giving people, and I'm always honored by how gracious my friends are, but when a guy gets to a
certain age, you kinda just buy the video games and books and music right when you want them, you know?
This year, I decided to do something a little different for my birthday. I was introduced recently to a charity
