This is why the Doctor is RealThis is something that actually happened some time back, but I didn't really write it down or anything. Lately though, I was thinking about it, and I wanted to share it with my friends here. This is why the Doctor is Real2 years ago in Personal More Like This
To give a little background, everyone in my family watches (and loves) Doctor Who. I have a very young sister who has only gotten to see a handful of episodes of the new series because the rest would scare her, but she still was desperate to see more of the Doctor, so we started watching the classic episodes together. She's our little Whovian. She loves all the Doctors, especially Eleven and Four, and she said Sarah Jane is her hero because 'she must be, like, the bravest person EVER and I want to be brave like her.'
I guess that's why I wasn't sure what to tell her when one day she walked up to me, a serious expression on her little face, and asked 'Sarah, is the Doctor real?'
I was stunned. I thought she understood it was just a show. She's never even believed

Toothless PlushIf you saw me at Otakon, you would have also seen the Toothless plush I was carrying as part of my cosplay. It was created by my very talented friend who has decided to make a few more! Her new plushes are a bit smaller than the one I was carrying at the convention (36" long with a 48" wing span). Her first plush has hand sculpted eyes and claws but the rest will have cast resin eyes with sculpted gloss claws that I will create (as soon as my molds are done).
She also takes commissions and is a fantastic sculptor! She's considering joining our crew at next year's Otakon!
If you're interested in the plush in these pictures you can find him here! If you're interested in having one crea

MMD In defense of rip artists ...MMD In defense of rip artists ...2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
DeviantArts (DA) is probably unique in several ways, but the thing that I've found strangest and have had the most difficulty with grappling with is their tolerance(?) of "rips". Which is why I think this could be an interesting discussion.
"Rips" are models taken from commercial computer and video games and used for "something else". Make no mistakes about it, probably 99.99% of rips are illegal in the sense that they were "stolen" from something else. Which, given the existence of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), makes it kind of strange that DA tolerates any rips on their servers at all. May be they really do deserve the kind of reputation that they receive on other forums on the Internet, or they just aren't making enough money to be worth the bother to sue. Who knows? The fact remains is that at the moment DA seems to be a safe haven for rippers and nowhere are they perhaps more visible than in the MMD field.
Then again, there's ano
AMAZING CHANCE ENCOUNTERAmazing.AMAZING CHANCE ENCOUNTER3 months ago in Personal More Like This
I know, it's name-dropping, sure, but it's also a chance in a bazillion...
I spotted Guillermo Del Toro at Oakland airport yesterday.
For whatever reason I felt compelled just to say hello, or forever kick myself. So…
"Mr Del Toro?"
"I just wanted to say hello. I believe we have some mutual friends…" and so it went for about three minutes.
I didn't want to push my luck, and everybody deserves their privacy. He was gracious, charming, and interested in who I was - which I believe says a lot about anybody. (My wife once put it very clearly - "it's as important to be interested as it is to be interesting…")
I was thrilled.
Soon we parted ways.
I emailed some friends like the big kid I am, grinning ear to ear.
Then I queued up for boarding.
By chance I had A1 - the first in line - and when I boarded...
there he was!
I asked if he minded if I sat next to him and he very warmly said no, not at all!
Long story short, we chatted like old friends

As of now, my brain is too fried to write up a proper journal entry about our volcano GARventure, and one of my usual event reports (as you can see on the right side of my journal) about Cosplay Mania, but I'd like to take this chance to share a part of our lecture of sorts at the Cosmania cosplay workshop last Sunday.
China snowpeachdrop, Kat moonlightflight, El rosiael and I were invited to talk about general cosplay planning, like fabric selection, wig styling, cosplay makeup and photography. My friends might post the other parts, but for now here is our silly guide about posing for cosplay photos, and convention etiquette. The actual presentation was actually longer, and with lots more examples, but here is a condensed rundown of what we talked about, fo

Our London deviantMEET Was Brilliant! On Saturday, June 14, 2009, deviantART held a deviantMEET at the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park. Over 350 deviants showed up to celebrate all things deviantART, setting a record for the highest attended deviantMEET in history in the process... until now.Our London deviantMEET Was Brilliant!2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Almost exactly three years later -- on Saturday, June 30, 2012 -- at the same location in Hyde Park, London deviants once again turned up in droves. Smashing the previous record, our London deviantMEET 2012 saw over 550 deviants throughout the day.
Most deviantMEETs include a group photo, usually taken towards the end of the event's festivities. However, we wasted no time taking our group shot in front of the Albert Memorial, as we wanted to ensure we were complying with Hyde Park's rules and regulations for large gatherings. With a group this massive -- and awesome -- it's hard not to draw attention!
Solomon's Key Challenge! This weekend, something I've been waiting a while for finally happened! Episode 6 of the 2nd season of Game Center CX got subbed! If you're unfamiliar with the show, it's a Japanese reality show where this TV comedian, Shinya Arino, attempts to play his way through a different game each episode, mostly Famicom games. The show is a joy to watch and in this new episode, he tackles the very first game I bought on Wii VC, Solomon's Key! A game I've yet to beat on my own. Wikipedia said he'd actually beaten it so I wanted to know how he did it. And INDEED he did it! And it took him 13 hours over two days. And I don't think he even got the best ending, either. Anyway... If he could do it, so should I, right? Over the last couple days, I've been working hard on it and I've logged 2:41 thus far and am as far as Room 22! It took Arino three hourSolomon's Key Challenge!5 years ago in Personal More Like This

sad homepages in the social networking snowUgh. 2011 was not what i'd call a particularly good year. Figures that it was the 10 year aniversairy of MT and stuff, too. ; One casualty of the year was a lot of BS with my host and the loss of the server containing the Fredart and Sarah's Origami websites. I have backups, so i can put things back together, i just haven't had the time yet... that and the fact that i really want to change fredart itself into a site i actually use to post and organize stuff rather than an older, rarely used repository of my older work.sad homepages in the social networking snow3 years ago in Personal More Like This
When i built the site back in 2000, non-static websites were kind of the new thing, sites that built themselves, parsing themselves server side when someone visited them. Up till then, updating a site was usually a manual task, editing the code to add stuff, tweak things, break things ; Of course, the kind of interconnected social platforms like DA and Pixiv and Facebook and Twitter and s
Art and perfectionismDear, deviantart fellow artistsArt and perfectionism4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Perfectionism can be a good and a bad thing at the same time. We strive for it, but sometimes the result doesn't exceed our expectations. And that's okay.
Not every single artwork you make has to be a masterpiece. Make some sketches, speedpaints, studies - just do something. See your flaws, be aware of them - and work on them. Don't put yourself down with negativity. It never helps. It takes time to learn, to gain new skills and make art. Through many hours of work we achieve what we want. And it takes time.
It's so easy to give up. To think - what's the point in doing this, if the artwork is never perfect. Art doesn't have to be always perfect, it has to be made. We have to get used to the fact that we'll never be good enough - there is a beauty in that, because we have something to strive for, to experience and observe.
Making art is difficult and yet it's fun. En

What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?
