Silent as the GraveHey y'all.Silent as the Grave4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I've been inactive here on dA for a bit, and just wanted to poke my head in and say hello.
There's been some restructuring regarding my planned schedule of late. I had hoped to have a nice, fat Bomango Halloween comic ready for submission in time for the 31st, but various obligations have made that unrealistic. Still, I've already completed 12 pages for the story so far (it runs at about 25 pages total), and to not finish it at all would be stupid. Also, I think it's going to be quite good once it's all colored and prettied up, not to mention it features Andy and Hector in an uncharacteristically action-y story, and a rather unhinged Didi . So even though I'll miss the holiday, I'll have a beast of a comic available in the end
Here's what's up: I'm going to be taking a hiatus from dA (with every intent to return) while I finish a children's book project that I've had burning for AGES. My scheduled timeline is for completion by January, at which point I

Mixing Thor movies and mythsSo I'm finally able to watch anything involving Marvel Thor and just tell myself "It's just a movie. No reason to get hung up on the details"Mixing Thor movies and myths4 months ago in Personal More Like This
But I still come by some people who only know the myths through the movies and make comments that just make me go nnnnggggg.
"I think some Norwegian myths or something said Loki was Odin's son"
No, I will repeat this forever, Loki was Odin's blood-brother (they cut themselves and mixed blood, making them official "real" brothers by Viking tradition). Loki was Thor's "uncle". Again, you can enjoy the movies/comics as much as you like, but it's silly to try and change the myths to fit them.
"According to some myths Frigga taught Loki his magic"
Again no. Jotuns (ice giants) were by default able to preform magic, and the myths very clearly say that Loki learned it from other jotuns.
If you want a plot bunny for your next Thor fanfiction however, this should do. The Vikings considered women to be magic, men not so much. It was seen as unm

A thing or two about styleYears ago, when I was still a lot younger and I still drew like this, I used to admire people that had a certain drawing style that distinguished them from other artists.A thing or two about style1 month ago in Deviant Events More Like This
No matter how strange or extreme it looked, at least they had something unique. Something that made people instantly know it was their work. I didn't have that at the time. Throughout my youth, I've been influenced by Dragonball Z, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, mecha anime, anime movie posters,

There is no cosmic law that states artists must suffer many long years and demeaning day-jobs before a window of opportunity cracks open just enough to hop on through.
Fellow deviant Brian Kesinger is a case in point.
His first “day-job” in 1996—he was hired straight out of his senior year of high school—was drawing Tarzan for Disney.
Brian stayed at Disney and he considers every day there a part of his ongoing education as an artist. He most recently worked on “Wreck It Ralph,” and has become active in the story department, where he dreams up fresh narratives and new characters with fellow Story Artists and Disney directors.
But more and more, he is being recognized for his own style and own creations
If Evangelion was PeanutsShinji Brown is one messed up kid. He got nothing but rocks for Halloween. He ruined Thanksgiving and Christmas. No one ever sends him a valentine. He can't have a normal Eva like everyone else. He never wins at baseball, and the little red headed girl never notices him.If Evangelion was Peanuts1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Despite that he will never give up. He will never run away. One day he will kick that football. Which might be the moon. We don't know. The symbolism in this show makes no sense.
Universal 40kThere are a whole shedload of reasons to love Warhammer 40,000 (lol chainswords http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KojB4Q4AoKM - I never get tired of watching that). One of the best, however, is that there's enough vagueness and built-in scale to allow just about any other story ever to be slotted in without changing a thing. Try it, it's fun!Universal 40k2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Event Horizon - The movie where humanity learned the value of the Geller field. Yuck.
Doom - A space marine killing demons with a shotgun and a chainsaw? What part of that isn't 40k? (More to the point, what part of that isn't awesome?)
Every Hellraiser movie except Bloodline - Although Slaanesh isn't due to become sentient for another 30,000 years, the drive for sensation that feeds him is already here. It only makes sense that there'd already be proto-cultists achieving daemonhood.
The Dark Knight - The Joker is a latent psyker who's been driven mad by Khorne's whisperin
Folklore creatures explainedA short list of things that will help you better understand Scandinavian folklore creatures. Some I've talked about before, others are new.Folklore creatures explained7 months ago in Personal More Like This
1) They are people. While they could turn invisible to humans they weren't considered spiritual creatures, but people with their own cultures. The troll culture, the elf culture, the gnome culture, and so on. They were believed to live normal everyday lives with their own conflicts and struggles, much like fantasy races in modern fiction.
2) They will treat you like you treat them. While some creatures are more dangerous than others, they always respond to respect with respect, kindness with kindness, and rudeness will be severely punished. This goes for ALL of them, even those popular media has taught you are either nice or evil.
3) They are connected with sex. Some like the huldra are inherently sexual, but even those that are not sexual in nature like gnomes still hold a stronger power over people who think a lot about sex, such as young people
DON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah BradleyDon't go to art schoolDON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah Bradley8 months ago in Personal More Like This
The traditional approach is failing us. It's time for a change.
I'VE HAD IT.
I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won't do it. Unless you're given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money.
I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. I'm not some flaky, disgruntled art graduate, either. I have a quite successful career, thankyouverymuch.
But I am saddened and ashamed at art schools and their blatant exploitation of students. Graduates are woefully ill-prepared for the realities of being professional artists and racked with obscene amounts of debt. By their own estimation, the cost of a four year education at RISD is $245,816. As way

Or how Europe saved the world from MPAA/RIAA's mind-bogging greediness, but a big merit in this silent war nobody speaks about, goes to Google and to Wikipedia for the critical contribution in bringing out of the dark this attempt at maximizing copyrights to the detriment of human rights (first and foremost the right of expression).
The world may have changed, and (at least in Italy) not a single journalist speaks about it.
For my fellow Europeans, July the 4th also marks a huge shift in the power balance of our Union, because for the first time our Parliament, democratically elected by us citizens, crushed the European Commission which was trying to force ACTA to pass (they're still trying, the fight is not over unfortunately).
It's a big precedent towards the creation of a truly democratic union of our countries, and not merely an economica

“Sometimes we lay aside our own troubles when we wipe away another's tears.”

his life is not easy; a winding, sometimes whimsical, sometimes tragic journey that ultimately finds terminus in the same common destination for each of us. No matter the brave, fierce constructs we build and serve that would have us believe we are each one of us all alone as we make this journey, we make our way toward the end of all things side-by-side in our community of the living each day defying death. Our paths may be wildly divergent—the way of the hungry and impoverished traveling the same timeline with the grotesquely indulgent, the very best of us side-by-side with the most evil of us; but all hea
