Self Harm Awareness day 1st March 2012Self Harm Awareness day 1st March 20123 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Today marks an awareness day over a subject that can mean many things to many people. Self Harm (or Self Injury) is the act of physical damage to oneself, usually as a coping strategy for expressing deep distress or coping in difficult situations. Self harm commonly is associated with cutting, but can also refer to any physical damage to the self including burning, hitting, taking overdoses, swallowing chemicals, bleaching, hair pulling ( trichotilliomania), scratching and so forth.
You may know what it is, but it is often the reasons why that people are not familiar with. There is still this belief and stereotype surrounding the type of person likely to harming them-self, but the truth is, it could be anyone no matter what gender, culture or age. The reasons behind self harm can be such a huge variety- different people cope in different ways with different distresses. Such issues that may trigger self harm might be bullying, t

Critiques: The artist's worst nightmare....Or so it is often thought. But it should never be.Critiques: The artist's worst nightmare....3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
(Please note, I'm not necessarily talking about deviantart's critique system, though this certainly applies to it. I'm talking about all feedback, whether in comments or notes, in person, or on another site. Deviantart simply has a good format for others to leave feedback to an artist.)
In art school, you tend two get two different types of young artists: people who are infatuated with their work, and people who have no confidence in it at all. But really, it all boils down to the same thing: as artists, we are incredibly reliant on other people's judgement of our work for our self-esteem. It sounds a bit stupid, but I don't know that I've talked to any serious business artists who say otherwise (though if you do, please tell me). Artists often view their work as an extension of themselves, or their soul, poured out on paper. We seek other people's approval, b

His Books of Blood in the 1980s established him as a premier master of the horror narrative, on an equal level or even surpassing Stephen King, who said of him;
I have seen the future of horror, his name is Clive Barker.
Like King, Barker’s works of horror have been adopted and adapted for movies, his stories becoming the basis for the Hellraiser and Candyman series and many more. Beyond his stories being used as source material, Barker has worked as screenwriter, producer, actor and director in the film world.
As with Stephen King, many of

1->You must post these rules.
2->Each person must post 10 things about themselves on their journal.
3->Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and create ten new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4->You have to choose 10 people to tag and post their icons on your journal.
5->Go to their pages and tell them you have tagged her/him.
6->No tag backs.
7->No crap in the tagging section about "you are tagged if you're reading this." You legitimately have to tag 10 people.

Sony A390 User Review!From our very own DarkMonkey78Sony A390 User Review!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Review of the Sony a390
After being away from SLR photography for a while I came back into photography 18 months ago needing a new camera. As a Minolta user I followed the trail to Sony after Minolta bowed out of the SLR side of things and sold that side of things to Sony in January 2006. As I had never really used a Digital SLRs before I opted for the a390.
On opening the box it reminded me of the joys of owning an SLR, it comes with the normal bits expected when you buy a kit camera body, lens, leads, battery, charger and software.
When first picking up the camera it is a pleasant feel, good in hand though a little light, but sometimes that is not a bad thing at all. The mottle effect on the body was a bit strange at first, it almost looks as if it’s not finished quite right but after a while it does grow on you and it actually looks better then the plan smooth looks of some at this end of the market and on tha

What is it about black stockings that makes me think of walking an avenue in Paris, hearing my high heels on the cobblestone walk and the swish of my skirt against my legs?
Stockings are old-fashioned, romantic, and very very sexy. Women rarely wear them in their day-to-day lives any more, so what do you do with black stockings?
These artists decided that you photograph them!

That Pesky Percieved DefaultI always marvel at how much of a learning experience this DA page can be. What always baffles me and makes me laugh is the male of our species. How times have progressed and yet how totally archaic they have stayed. Technology has advanced and yet instead of refining and polishing our species to some enlightened Star Trek type of society it is in fact proving to be the ultimate weapon of the classic, monosyllabic, bonehead( Technology as an instrument of human de-evolution would be a great study too)
Yes folks I am a girl but my sexual default setting is not set to far left corner of the dial at "Penis". I am amazed that in this era of supposed sexual freedom, and liberation that the perception is still that strict heterosexuality is the absolute and only norm. Perhaps we have the bible to blame for that with that old chestnut kn
The Perks of PrettinessSo I just got into a nasty argument with a friend who accused me that my life was easy and non problematic simply because I am "pretty" and "white". I am floored by the presumptuous nature of people when it comes to individuals who appear to be white and hence instantly "priveleged".The Perks of Prettiness3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So here is the truth. I have worked and supported myself since I was 17, I got my medical education in Europe for free but I came to the US and got my other diploma here and paid full price as a non resident non citizen, I was not eligible for loans, my whiteness or sexy ass did not pay my bills or my tuition. No I worked three jobs and paid taxes and never got one red cent from the government.
Oh and the whole "white" claim? Well I am half French but I am also part Japanese amongst a few other things. Increase the Japanese by a few percent and I would have as much claim to being an "ethnic minority" as the President of the USA has. How is that for a spoiled white girl who cruised by on her looks?
