Sparks Lake offers many fantastic vantage points of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor. I took this photo on a chilly September morning, just before hiking to the top of South Sister (pictured here). My timing was serendipitous, not only for the incredible clouds but also for the fallen log in the water, which created fascinating reflections that became an integral part of my composition.

This is one of my favorite riverside vantage points along the the Old Salmon River Trail, not far from where I took this photo:

For many, waking up to clear, blue skies and temperatures in the eighties sounds close to perfect. However, these circumstances result in rather uninteresting atmospheric conditions and often lackluster sunrises and sunsets. In late September and early October, the Rockies were experiencing just these types of conditions, an Indian summer. After more than a week of waiting for the weather to turn, our patience was rewarded with a pair of magnificent sunrises. The clouds and early light combine to create incredibly dramatic and stunning scene.

Featured as Earth Shot's Photo of the Day on 7/2/09 ([link]) as well as Photo of the Day on Aperture Academy on 7/9/09 ([link])

This was one of the hardest 1.5 mile hikes I've ever made. You start from the lake down there and hike up this steep, crumbly mountain until you get to this ridge. I damn near killed myself stepping on unstable rocks over and over.

I loved the view here and set up for sunset. It took me about an hour to find a spot and composition I really liked. I really liked this shot more than later ones I took from the same spot, because the sun is falling scross those trees in the front and adds a lot the depth of the image by having a nice middleground subject. Later, those trees were dark and it didn't seem as strong of an image.

A mounted print of this shot can be purchased at my Etsy store for only $20 - [link]

Last weekend I had a nice hike with some friends, Jesse and Nick, up to Dream Lake before sunrise. It was chilly but worth the effort. The sun slowly worked down the peaks giving a soothing warmth during a cold morning. We all had a moment to ourselves as the sun enveloped Hallet Peak and Flattop Mountain.

Semi-close, this may be my new favorite spot to shoot.

Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, I have been fortunate enough to see (and photographing) hundreds of waterfalls. Proxy Falls remains my favorite. If you visit the Pacific Northwest, you should make every attempt to visit this incredible waterfall. If you have a camera, you can easily spend an entire afternoon here. Trail information/directions can be found here.

Here are side views from my 2010 Proxy Falls Pilgrimage:
