About sxc.hu stockGreetings!About sxc.hu stock2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
A few of you have been really worried lately about using stock from sxc.hu here because of the change in their ownership. Basically, you were concerned that their license says that you cannot redistribute their stock in whole or in part, by itself or combined with other elements, without the written approval of the original photographer.
As we all know by now, creating a photomanipulation is considered "making a derivative image." And we know we can't make premade backgrounds without permission from the photographers, as doing so is redistributing their work.
I advised a couple of you to check with the Help Desk and sxc.hu to find out the whole truth before making rash decisions about your group that could potentially make everyone panic.
Using my own personal account, I wrote to sxc.hu to find out what the story was. Here's what I said:
I was just wondering whether creating phot

You may think that the creation and sharing of stock and resources is a no brainer. Clearly however its not, and there are a growing number of deviants who for some reason or another seem to not be able to grasp the basic principles.
As the last article we will be launching for Stock & Resources Project Educate week, we are going to attempt to lay it out for you in clear and easy to understand terms.

Important Site Update that Affects StockChanges to .zip file submissions that will affect youImportant Site Update that Affects Stock2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I know some of you might already be aware of the changes that have happened if you have sent in help desk tickets about it, however for those of you who aren't yet aware; there has been a statement issued here -
Effectively, password protected zip files are no longer accepted on the site.
Whilst it is a huge disappointment that password protected zip files are no longer accepted, I would rather this be the case than to allow a potential access area for somebody to try and infect your computer by submitting what might look like a genuine stock pack or .exe file, and despite this being an inconvenience and what feels like a step back, I'm sure you would all agree.
There are alternatives for submitting/sharing exclusive stock packs etc, including using your sta.sh for normal zip files as sta.sh is a private area, accessed only when you give out the sta.sh link of submitted - but unpub
Stock and Resources: Policy ClarificationThe Stock and Resources community is an integral part of deviantART, both for having an active community of its own as well as providing high quality stock to all deviants.Stock and Resources: Policy Clarification2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.
Stock and Resource submissions to deviantART:
What are Invalid Stock and Resources?
In short, invalid stock or resources are anything which you do not have full permission to upload. This incl

What Is It Like Being A Stock artist/ProviderSo how many of you remember that journal i did where i tried to focus on some of the artists who provide and create stock for others to use ,don't worry as it was a while back when i wrote it.Any way i thought this time i will ask the stock community " What Is It Like Being A Stock Artist And Provider",it would be nice to hear on what inspired you to look at the possibility of creating resources from your own art and photos.Moving on seeing how large this community is where everyone comes together to make new friends, network and to share their art,do the artists who provide stock allow themselves to ensure they have enough photos not only so they can create art but still have enough set aside for others to use. What Is It Like Being A Stock artist/Provider1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Changes to my deviantART AccountHello Dear Friends and Distinguished DeviantsChanges to my deviantART Account2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am currently making some changes to my dA account which might be of interest to you. Except for a few old submissions that need some spring cleaning, I am not taking anything away, but rather presenting you with more options.
First of all, I have decided to release some of my photos into the public domain (ie unrestricted) which you can find in this gallery folder of mine: http://somadjinn.deviantart.com/gallery/36267164
Please note these public domain photos are exceptions to the rule for my stock photos, as you will see with the UNRESTRICTED tags after their titles and the special descriptions I include to reiterate that they are unrestricted (example: http://somadjinn.deviantart.com/art/Bleeding-Rose-Macro-III-UNRESTRICTED-64916274).
These are photos I considered deleting because they no longer satisfy my personal standards of quality, but then I am reminded I practically grew up with this community in terms of photograph

Putting my Stock in StorageTime for me to start putting my stock in storage for reasons explained in my previous journal entry:Putting my Stock in Storage1 year ago in Personal More Like This

If you're interested in the details, I believe I've made my reasoning pretty clear and I don't want to harp on it any more than I have to. Instead, I would like to thank you for your support & appreciation. This community has been very helpful in making me grow as a stock provider, photographer and visual artist. I've learned so much from your feedback, admiring your works and just randomly surfing this site with child-like excitement for the next leap of inspiration.
I still plan to keep a presence here, just more like a friend and observer moving forward. You do not need to worry about how these changes will affect any future uses of my stock, the standard Creative Commons license (Attribution 3.0) will still apply. I would ju

You know, yesterday, after my daily shower, while blowing my hair, I took a pair of scissors and I started cutting my hair without thinking. Yes, it's not like I always think but I had this urgency of changing. And the fact is that I spent the past two years complaining that I wanted/want long hair like Rapunzel... whatever.

You can learn a lot about techniques from numerous sources, you can find the right audience on the internet but there is one thing nobody can help you with but yourself - how to gain a specific style of your own?
What is a personal painting style?
- It's an identifiable style that enables the viewer to determine that the artwork was done by you
- In some cases, your style can be viewed as an extension of your personality
How can one develop it?
- Developing your style takes time, time and time once again. Don't have the time? No style for you!
- It's not acquirable in an art class. While it can be helpful to study by an assistance of someone who's m

It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.
What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t
