The Sean Murphy ApprenticeshipI'm thinking about taking on some students for a two week "boot camp" course in comics--based off the classic master/apprentice style of education. But before I move forward with the idea (and begin Kickstarting), I wanted to get your feedback and see if anyone is interested in enrolling this winter. Please pass this along (Twitter/facebook) to anyone you think might be interested. The Sean Murphy Apprenticeship3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I bought a house in Portland, Maine this past weekend. It's a 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom Victorian house that's been newly renovated. The top floor is finished and will become the drawing studio for 5 students. The idea is to furnish the building with tables, chairs, couches, beds, a TV, a library, a photo studio (for taking reference images) and all the other amenities that would create the school.
After selecting the 5 students (I'll take submissions that will be juried later on), we'll all meet in Portland this winter for the two week apprenticeship. The students will live i

What Came First...?
A couple years back, our publisher's CEO made a splash in the video gaming blogs and news sites by saying that we upheld our jobs with dignified sincerity, and that we knew the process of making fun and games was anything but fun and games. Of course, considering the hilarious level of integrity professional video gaming blogs adhere to (hilarious!), you could imagine those words were twisted around to single out one phrase. Take out all the previous context, and what's left? "We take the fun out of making video games."
Might as well conclude that Fukishima just started glowing in the dark one morning, St. Elsewhere is a documentary about autism, or JFK was killed by quite a powerful migraine.
The safest course of action when offered an interview by a gaming blog is to simply decline, especially if y

I finally decided to send some of my art to Dark Horse, DC and Marvel.
So, I stopped by their recpectives websites to get the submissions instructions and, what a surprise, DC and Marvel only accept submissions at Comic book conventions; not even via Mail. Sadly, there are no one of these three attending to Montreal Comic Con.
Anyway, I sent a package to DH and, well, wait to see if I'll get, at least, an answer...
Is there any other editors, with decent page rate and payment process, where I can send art sample?

Hello there my fellow deviants!
I bring you the next collab theme!
This collab was the first collab I ever ran and I was overwhelmed to have 166 people!! I was a Gallery Moderator (Community Volunteer) at the time and tried lots of failed experiments with the community. When I failed all those times I learned more what the community likes and then came up with the idea to draw Kirbies to celebrate their 20th anniversary! I would like to walk back in time and draw Kirby again for charity!!
Examples from the First Collab!!
Tribute to Robin WilliamsAs many are aware the world lost beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams recently. A truly gifted man, he is an icon that defined a generation and brought laughter and smiles to millions of all ages. Although he may be gone he will live on forever in our hearts, in our memories and in our art. I'm starting to cry just typing this so I'll stop here, Mr. Williams...you will be greatly missed.....Tribute to Robin Williams1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Digital Illustration TutorialI made this tutorial back in 2010 as a pitch for a project that never took off. I finally decided I should just bundle it up as a PDF and upload it for anyone who wants to see it. It's old and the image quality isn't super great, but it covers my process from idea creation, composition, adding color, all the way to the final draft, and there might be something useful in there for some of you.Digital Illustration Tutorial4 years ago in Personal More Like This

Exposure, Getting Better, Having the ChopsEXPOSURE & GETTING BETTER AT WHAT YOU DOExposure, Getting Better, Having the Chops4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm only going off of my own personal experiences talking about these few things. (And I'm not specifically talking about ONLY dA here.) So take it with as many grains of salt as you can.
I've recently been asked questions like "How do I get people to see my work?", "Why am I not receiving commission inquiries?", "Why isn't anyone following my work?", "What can I do to get better?". Often, and I answered it before, the answer is as simple as this:
Create, as in, DRAW. PAINT. RENDER. SCULPT. You have to do develop a tolerance (or the obvious definition: LOVE) for creating if you want exposure and to get better. You have to LOVE the drawing or illustration that you HATE how it came out in the end. You have to ask yourself after every piece, what could I have done to do that differently. And you have to do this frequently.
Some folks come on the scene, post once or twice a week, and expect an audience to flock yo
Writing Effective DialogueWe've all struggled through figuring out how to write dialogue that not only gets the information out there, but also helps build characters or advance the plot. There are tons of books and blogs out there on the topic, too. But just reading about it doesn't do much good if we're not ready to try it out. Give it a go and see what other people think. But let's start with the basics.Writing Effective Dialogue1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is Effective Dialogue?
Dialogue that's written well will reveal character traits, add to the tension and suspense, helps cut down on text walls of description and of course, advances your plot. One of the most important things to keep in mind when you're writing dialogue is that in fiction, your reader doesn't want to read all the mundane things we say on a regular basis. So if it's not moving the plot or adding to your character's personality, you should think about cutting it completely.
What do I mean by reveals character traits?

okay, so after a swarm of questions many of which left me with my jaw on the floor... i realized something...
people are afraid of pushing a button to see what it does
okay, to backtrack first. i am self taught in photoshop, had no books had no tutorials, had a borrowed i think 7... dunno which was before cs2 when i started, i learned it by ....pressing a button and seeing what it does
i explored, i tried stuff out.
i had no teachers no schools no education on this stuff
i saw a button i pressed it.
that is how about 9 years ago when i first decided to try and apply digital coloring to early pages of ravine, i was dabbing paint on a page. i came to the point where i had to paint a waterfall. so , just for fun i tried putting scattering on the foam brush i made, a simple thing. and i was gonna see if smudge could be scattered. it had a weird side effect.

I am bringing your attention to a documentary, Beauty is Embarrassing, that
deeply inspired me after a screening last week. The life wisdom and positive
philosophy unfolding over a lifetime of living as an artist was deeply motivating.
I invited Wayne White, the subject of this documentary, to join deviantART afterwards.
I thought this would be something you would enjoy no matter where you might be at
on your own personal journey as an artist. While watching this I was also reminded
of the heartfelt explanations by many artists of what it means to choose the life of an Artist.

Character Design: An introductionCharacter Design: An introduction3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Arvalis-2012 by arvalis
What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a
