Death of a NationEngland was dying. No one said it, he just knew. Truth be told, he'd been dying for a good while now, over two decades in fact. Maybe that was why it didn't scare him; he'd had time to come to terms with it. Or maybe it was simply that he was so very tired. He'd been sick since that day in 1983, vast burns seared into his flesh, his heart aflame. That had passed the burns (London, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, York, Leeds, and over a dozen others) scaring over. The sickness and hunger that followed had passed as well, although that had taken longer. But in the end, when it was all over and his people had clawed their way back from the brink, he'd found that they weren't really his people anymore. Where there had once been a single nation, him, there were now several and slowly but surely their inhabitants, even those who were old enough to remember how things were before, stopped thinking of themselves as English and started thinking of themselves as citizens of these new nations, anDeath of a Nation4 years ago in General Fiction More Like This

The middle-aged man kept droning on in forced professionalism as the panic all around them gradually turned to exhausted, silent resignation. Before them, the screens displayed ominously glowing lines and dots moving ever closer to their targets. As Alfred tried to straighten out the bomber jacket he still had on over his suit, he recalled something on what his s

"So let me get this straight," Infinity Ward Director Jason West said finally. "You're not supposed to kill him."
"Um, not exactly sir." The reply came almost unanimously from the small group of programmers in front of him, having finished their proposal for a new mod. "It's supposed to be a challenge."
"You do realize how close to launch the game is. And yet you tell me about this now?!" It wasn't hyperbole. The follow-up to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was just a few months close to release date. Besides, there was still the matter of polishing, debugging and generally finishing the game. And with the scuffle with Activision brewing, things were becoming harder for everyone the office.
"Mr. West," one of them pleaded. "Won't you at least see the playback?"
"Fine. But don't think I'll just change my mind." Everyone's eyes soon turned to the flatscreen TV as the loading

The hillside garden that formed part of Liechtenstein's house may have been overgrown at points, many shrubs, wildflowers and edelweiss sprouting where they shouldn't be. But overlooking the still picturesque Swiss Alps, it was tempting to act as though what happened in 1983 was nothing more than a dream. Nonetheless, for Austria and the Alpine siblings, it was quiet and secluded enough for a nice picnic. And a good opportunity to let Julia have some recreation, the Nation thought as he tried to share Switzerland some of his strudel. Even now, it seemed as though Vash always needed a gun around his person at all times, which coupled with his brash personality captured the average Swiss mindset almost perfectly.
Sighing, the aristocrat turned his attention towards Lilli, with the embodiment of Sopron just behind her as they made their way back from w

Among the myriad peoples that make up humanity are beings that from the outside resemble us. Yet at the same time they embody within their very essence whole cultures, societies and countries, such that they are them. Some of us may already be aware in some manner of these avatars, if not know them personally. From all the names given to them, it is for the sake of convenience that this document refers to these beings as "Nation-Personifications," or "Nations" for short. It is also for the purpo

With the exception of Sopron, the Alpines found the whole affair utterly surreal as they tried to make sense of the realization that Hungary herself, who was supposed to be another casualty of Doomsday, was right in front of them, spending a tender moment with her daughter. Not that it bothered Austria in the slightest as he joined his old family, having longed for a moment like this ever since their marriage all those years ago. As the day wore on, however, the picnic went back to something resembling peace and calm, though with a haunting sense of nostalgia.
"So Deutschland is doing well, ja?" Switzerland's sister asked the former Nation, a mix of fear and excitement in her otherwise soft voice. "Up there I mean?"
The Magyar chuckled as she took a sip from the glass, which seemed to make her more radiant if only for a second. "Yes de

Sweating under the bulky combat overalls that formed his radiation suit, Switzerland wearly made his way towards a large, nondescript tent nestled away from the main encampment. Yet even from here, his ears sensed the familiar sounds of gunfire echoing from the distance. While above him, the sky had taken on a dreary, almost monotone grey even if it was only 2:00 PM. What remained of the invading Soviet leaders had called for a cease-fire a while back, he recalled. Though it was clear the Austrians had no intention of leaving any enemy standing on their soil alive. Not after they glassed Vienna.
Then again, he couldn't blame them. It had only been weeks since the nuclear warheads first started flying. All communication with the outside world was gone as EMP fried most of their signals and electricity. One didn't have to be neutral or a military expert to figure out t

"Herr Beilschmidt?" Prussia heard one of the Royal Guardsmen bellow, turning around to find the man in an crisp dark blue ceremonial uniform standing in attention. "We should be arriving at Linz within the hour. And with respect, please try to keep this matter discreet."
"I'll keep that in mind, Falkner," he smirked casually. "Thanks for the tip though! And if that's all, o take a breather!"
Keeping an inconspicuous envelope tucked under his arm, the albino couldn't help but grin approvingly as the officer left his spacious though simple quarters. The small collection of maps, replica paintings and photographs showcased the past and present glories of his people, all centered around the crest of the Black Eagle. Though inconspicuously, those either dating back to his East German days or the fights with Poland were blotted out.

Wach auf, wach auf du deutsches Land - Wake up, wake up, you german land!
German folk-song from the 16th century by Johann Walter 1496 - 1570, one of the first patriotic songs in german lands.
1.) Wake up, wake up, You german land!
You have slept enough,
bethink, what God has turn to You,
wherefore he has created You!
Bethink, what God has sent You
and entrust You his utmost pledge,
therefore You should arise!
2.) The truth is just choked down,
nobody wants to hear the truth;
the lie is getting well adorned,
one help her often with oathes;
thus Word of God is spurned,
the truth derided,
the lie one does honour.
3.) What was earlier injustice, sin and shame,
just is highly praised as good.
What earlier was named lead and tin,
today one is calling iron.
All things have reversed in contrary,
injustice proliferated highly,
as the feat(s) prove(s).
4.) Help God us all,
that we left behind our sins,
and lead us into his realm,
that we hate injustice!
Lord Jesus help us
and give us Your spiri

The stereo kept blaring in the background as Alfred tried to relax. There was nothing much on TV that he didn't already know about, even with those new cable channels propping up. Just another September day of going about the usual business, though it seemed longer than usual. Must be the paperwork again, he convinced himself while grabbing a can of soda. The Nation could have blamed it on Russia again, like he usually did lately. But this time, the thought seemed far too close to something nagging in his head.
From his window however, everything seemed to go on as normal, the White House just down the corner. While some were no doubt tourists, the embodiment knew many of the pedestrians just as he can sense every single one of his people. Contra
History of the Iraq-Syrian WarHistory of the Iraq-Syrian War3 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
With falling support and political turmoil, the dictator and president of Iraq, Malik Hassan Zaid al-Asad, had his military leaders devise a strategy to invade Iran during the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The hope was that if Iran fell, no one would be able to question the validity of the al-Asad regime. A week before Iraqi troops prepared to cross the border, American troops invaded Iran to "stabilize" the country. With US troops in Iran, the invasion was called off. al-Asad decided that Syria would then be a better target. Before any real battle plans could be draw, al-Asad ordered the invasion. The invasion caught the Syrian military by surprise, but Iraqi supply lines quickly broke down during the Battle of Deir ez-Zor. Syria managed to recover from the shock and go on the offensive. After defeating the Iraqi Army at Deir ez-Zor (1980), they began to push them back to the border.
With Syrian troops close to the border, retired general, Akbar Khalif Rajaa al-Anfal, was forced back in
Ecce Homo Acadiensis - PrologueThe world of great empires has long since passed away. None now live that remember the world of our ancient ancestors. It began with Pandora. Most historians believe that it was released from the jungles of Vietnam as its cities grew. Some even say that the reason the cities were forced to grow outward was because the seas rose and drowned the ancient coasts. Many are skeptical that this is possible, but more and more evidence mounts that shows this may actually have happened.
The plague of Pandora ravaged the world. The year 1 BF became known as the Great Dying to our ancestors. Within seven days, the disease had reached all seven continents. Within one year, one in four people on the planet were left alive. But that was just the beginning of

The following presented are a general overview of some of the major languages spoken this alternate timeline. Due to the peculiar nature of divergences and the ideas behind both the terms "For want of a nail" and "In spite of a nail," it is little surprise to find that the versions of the languages spoken may not necessarily be exactly similar to those used in another world or time. Nonetheless, it should also be kept in mind that native-speaking visitors would find much that is recognizable and in some manner identical.
Spoken by approximately 300 Million people, the English language is one of the largest in the world, concentrated primarily in the Northern Hemisphere and the various lands formerly and currently under the British Imperial Commonwealth. But for all its diversity, it is predominated by two umbrella groups generally known as American Standard and Commonweal
