Farewell to The CountJerry Nelson, best known as the voice and pupeteer of Sesame Street's numerically-obsessed vampire, The Count, has died:Farewell to The Count2 years ago in Personal More Like This
He did a great deal of work with Jim Henson and company, so, anyone who A) was a child, and/or B) ever watched TV, will most likely have seen or heard him at some point.
Due to the fact I suck at math, The Count obviously failed me on that front, but damn did I get some good tips on maniacal laughter.

Two more fics and they're both really really good. Though the S/GO one is a bit choppy until you get to later the chapters.

The Fairy Tale, A Lifelong ResonanceA thousand years tradition of scaring children at bedtime continues for children of all ages. News of the discovery of 500 “new” fairy tales collected over 150 years ago [link] in Germany and locked away in a forgotten archive has me thinking about the enduring importance of these narrative treasures in the lives of human societies worldwide. My worry, have fairy tales been marginalized by modernism? The Fairy Tale, A Lifelong Resonance2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This

QuestionHad anyone had or seen any deletions in the last couple of months of images NOT of the following series?Question2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Avatar (specifically Ty Lee)
Teen Titans (specifically Raven)
I got in a debate with someone over the "safe" and "unsafe" characters to draw in any mature fashion here on DA - specifically Adventure Time.
If the images have actual sexual content or adult situations then they don't count - we are just talking nudity, lingerie or provocative posing.
Just looking for the new hot-buttons to avoid since the last batches of deletions around SDCC (an apparent housecleaning for guests and new visitors)
(Let's keep this discussion civil people, it is for everyone's benefit to know these things just in case. Try not to link to anything specific, it is apparent this journal is being monitored and I would hate to see anyone get in trouble)

RIP - H.R. GigerKooky Swiss artist and master of f**ked-up imagery, H.R. Giger, has died: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-27390345RIP - H.R. Giger5 months ago in Personal More Like This
His work was brought to prominence, obviously, by the design of the titular Alien in Ridley Scott’s film, but he was also more or less the godfather of “biomechanical” science fiction/horror illustration.
I can’t say I was ever a real fan of his work. Most of it made my flesh crawl. It was art, but it was utterly repulsive.
Why mention his passing, then? Well, love or hate his style, its effect on the science fiction/horror genres is undeniable, and they wouldn’t be the same without him.

"Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."—Prof. Albus Dumbledore
Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian times in which map

RetardA couple of people (literally only two, but it's a matter worth mentioning) emailed me after they had read the most recent Sequential Art strip, in which the fictitious element “Retardium” is mentioned. Both messages voiced disapproval at my using the word “Retard” due to its slang referencing of the mentally disabled.Retard9 months ago in Personal More Like This
That interpretation of the word, in my eyes, is outdated.
Used in describing a mentally disabled individual, “retard” is a slur, and (as with any slur) anyone who says it in that context deserves a sharp blow to the head. However, used to describe a “wilfully ignorant, able-bodied idiot”, I think “retard” is perfectly acceptable. I’ll wager that everyone reading this knows someone that can accurately be described as a "f**king retard", none of whom are disabled in the slightest, nor in using the word is a mentally disabled person even thought of.
I’ve not heard “retard” used to des
Mek's Väki - Scene 3 - The PlanMek walks back into an office that has had all its furniture and equipment pushed against the walls, making room for Jade to (once again) attempt to teach Seamus to do something constructive with a long blade. [The odd thing is that Seamus is as handy as the next guy with a normal knife, but hand him something with a blade longer than 8 inches and he acts like he's holding the business end of a live haddock.]Mek's Väki - Scene 3 - The Plan9 years ago in Personal More Like This
This scene doesn't really surprise Mek. "That's enough, we've got a job." He doesn't waste time anymore telling the two of them to grow up.
Mek takes a sheet of paper from his case, a public domain satellite photo of the estate along with its geo-loc. "Seamus, get everything there is on this house..."
"...Wow! That's a big house, and even at this pitiful resolution I can see three pairs of guards on roving patrol." Seamus has a great eye for detail.
Mek looks closely at the image. "Yes, well, get to it. I

He was an artist you might not know.
But you’ve met his children…
It’s rare that a “new” iconic monster is born and becomes forever identifiable,—— no matter the variations, by generation after generation. So it was when George Romero created the ultimate “zombie” in his Night of the Living Dead in 1968. Zombie Apocalypse fans today may have never heard of George or seen the original “Night,” but the zombies they so love in fare like The Walking Dead
