Rambling Woman BluesAll my biscuits are broken,
and I'm eating the crumbs.
Sometimes you just take it
any way that it comes.
Oh, my baby is rambling,
and I can't track her down.
It's three weeks tomorrow
since she rolled out of town.
And I know she's a good girl
and she won't do me wrong,
but the days are so empty
and the nights are too long.
I ate all the oysters
and I'm down to the shells.
You know we all do things
that none of us tells.
And my best friends are tired
of me singing the blues -
well, if I told the truth, friends,
I'd say I'm tired too.
But I need a companion
when I get so lowdown.
When my friends say, "Good night, Slim,"
the blues stick around.
When my baby gets back here,
I will send them away.
I'll say, "Thanks for your time, blues,
I don't need you today."
Every cat has its whiskers,
every dog has its day.
When your baby is rambling,
got to see it that way.

Avenging angel has more work than can be done -
sits at the bar buying drinks for everyone.
Barefoot angel broke a toe
on the stone of human woe.
Card-carrying angel shows ID -
as if an angel cared about security.
Desolate angel waits for what may never be -
will not listen but has to see and see and see.
Edifying angel writes on the wall -
and writes again after we erase it all.
Feral angel has claws that split oak,
fells a tall tree with a single stroke.
Glaring angel can hurt you with a look -
hurt you even from his picture in a book.
Hardnose angel will listen to your plea,
and then give the answer, "It's not up to me."
Inebriated angel is higher than a kite,
says everything is all, and all is all right.
Justice-loving angel may not see things as you do.
(Merciful angel may be the one for you.)
Kind-hearted angel can face anything real.
Of course this

I'm sleeping better now
than I ever used to do,
most anything can happen
and I will sleep right through.
I like my fractal coffee,
its taste is smooth as silk,
I always drink it black,
I don't care for fractal milk.
You know I am your friend,
you can always count on me,
if you should need a doctor
I will send you three.
I do not have a lighthouse
but I have a little light -
I may not light the the ocean
but I'll get you through the night.
I'm working on my boat,
I build it every day -
If you will build a river,
then we can sail away.
Feed the wolfFeed the wolf2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You have to feed the wolf.
He does not want a grandmother.
He does not want a girl in red.
They would not enjoy it
and he could end up dead.
You have to feed the wolf.
He does not want a nightmare,
he does not want a dream.
Nightmares taste like old, dry bread
and dreams too fresh and green.
You have to feed the wolf.
He does not want the moon.
He does not want the stars.
He swallowed half the moon last night -
stars make his throat feel sore.
You have to feed the wolf.
He does not want a language
he never knew till now.
He swallowed seven just last week -
they all turned into howls.
You have to feed the wolf.
He does not want tomorrow,
does not want yesterday.
Despite their lovely fragrance,
when bit they slip away.
You have to feed the wolf.
Try roses. Yes.
He wants roses.

Old blue dogOld blue dog1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I have an old blue dog, as big as he can be.
He eats way too much but he keeps me company.
I call him Jim and he always calls me sir.
I don't make him do that but it's what he prefers.
He sharpens his claws on the oak tree in the yard.
His claws are nice and sharp but the tree is kind of scarred.
If I sit at the piano he gives me a sideways glance.
But when I play boogie-woogie, he always starts to dance.
He goes to town on Tuesday after I help him groom,
comes home again on Wednesday smelling like perfume.
One time he fought that orange cat that lives a mile away.
But then they licked each other and they are friends today.
He saved a lot of people that time the sky fell down.
They gave him a nice medal but he doesn't wear it now.
One thing he never learned to do is play the violin.
He says he played the banjo once and he thinks he could again.
If I can't sleep at night, he turns the radio on
Taking a rideTaking a ride2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was riding my red bicycle, going down those power lines,
obeying the speed limits and reading all the signs.
I'd been to see Big Serious and now I was headed home,
sometimes being with that guy will make you feel alone.
My ice cream started melting, and so I ate it up,
my favorite flavor - ginger - in a cone and not a cup.
My consciousness was smiling, my heart was open wide,
I began to have the feeling Lord Ganesh was by my side.
The power lines, they took me home, and I was glad to see
my dearest one was waiting there to shine her light on me.

It was a blue moon night, I was anxious and afraid.
I had some heavy debts, and had they all been paid?
You take the world into your arms, you know you have to try
to keep it safe while you look the lion in the eye.
There is my footprint and those sticks arrayed as if by chance -
the evidence will pass away but yes, there was a dance.
I used to know just what to do, I used to be so sure -
but I think what I miss the most is those red boots I wore.
Life's what you know and what you do and the company you keep,
and who it is you're glad to see when you wake

The spotted men are walking and a storm is close behind,
it's bound to get them soon and I hope they do not mind.
Sometimes you check the mirror and a storm is what you find.
I was going to bake a cake but my sugar had a flaw -
it was the meanest sugar that you ever saw.
I think that kind of sugar ought to be against the law.
I bought a can of freedom, so glad to make it mine -
freedom is not free, it cost a dollar forty nine.
If the can would only open, things would be just fine.
You still can see the pipes sticking up out of the ground -
the trucks would pull up to the place and make a pumping sound.
They don't deliver any more, we have to go to town.
I have a funky monkey who says his name is Stan -
on Tuesday he goes out and plays the banjo in a band.
When I have tea he comes to me and sits upon my hand.

I liked them both just fine.

Who can blame me thinking:
Life is all the same.
Stairs go up and stairs come
Down, it's just a game.
They say, hurry, hurry,
Faster, faster, go!
Here's my secret trick: try
Fewer steps, and slow.
Echoes fade, it's quiet.
No one's looking? Stop.
Hectic, as a diet,
Makes a deathly drop.
Keeping up is easy:
Someone's coming? Pant.
Breathless, faint or queasy—
Fake ten watts, no amp.
Jumping right past you,
Get rewards so lethal:
Steps to climb anew!

The captain would not listen when the crew politely questioned -
he said he had to hold his course and finally shipwrecked us.
With twenty thousand miles to go to reach our destination,
we sent a message on ahead that said, "Best not to expect us."
Some studied what had happened as if details were salvation -
they only found we had not known how little did protect us.
We tried to take the captain down and relieve him of his station -
and still he stayed the captain, somehow able to deflect us.
The poets and the priests conferred and offered consolation.
"We'll do all that we can," they said, "as long as you respect us."
They say that trouble has a way to bring people together -
if that is true in fact, would someone please connect us?
At least heartbreaking moons are giving nights of peaceful resting -
we lie awake and gaze at them till dreams come to collect us.
Some days we are disco

We broke the covenant and thrived, convinced we could go on.
But when we saw those penguins fly we thought we might be wrong.
The sound of five hands clapping fell upon the ears of all.
The sixth one had gone off somewhere to write upon a wall.
A trumpet played so sweetly in a nearby space.
A waxing moon was in the sky with clouds that looked like lace.
I heard it in the alley on the night of April 3.
I stopped and stood and listened, though I had places to be.
I'm going back to old K.C., why don't you meet me there?
We'll watch the butterflies go by and sm

I'm blue as a bottle, I'm blue as a bone,
I'm blue as old Sisyphus rolling that stone.
I'm blue as a cop and blue as a thief.
I take all these pills and I get no relief.
I'm blue as a river and blue as a rose,
I'm blue as an emperor wearing new clothes.
I'm blue as a porpoise and blue as a peach.
Any cure for these blues is way out of reach.
I'm blue as a cheese and blue as a chair,
I'm blue as a handle holding on to thin air.
I'm blue as a candle and blue as a cloud.
I think being this blue should not be allowed.
I'm blue as a spaniel and blue as a spruce,
I'm blue as an orange that is all out of juice.
I'm blue as that boy who was blowing his horn.
I've been blue as can be ever since I was born.
I'm blue as a tractor, I'm blue as a train,
I'm blue as a rain

I met trouble on the street, it asked me for the time of day.
I checked my watch and answered, "Time you were on your way."
Trouble said, "Well, maybe I'll walk with you as you go."
I said, "Is there any way to stop you?" and trouble answered no.
So I walked on with trouble, we went down Ezekiel Street,
passing by those dry bones where a great army met defeat.
There were wheels above us in the sky, their sound a steady drone.
I saw how that made trouble smile, and I wished I was alone.
The longer I walked with trouble, the less I liked his company.
But he said, "You are all right, son, I think you belong with me."
We came back to my neighborhood, not saying too many words.
When we cut through the little park, I was watching all the birds.
I said to trouble, "Take a look - see that crow so big and black?
It's being chased by those two sparrows diving at its back."

I don't know about you, babe, but I'm not satisfied.
I see the future speed away on a highway six lanes wide.
Everything they told me about this place has come true.
But you know they told me nothing! So what was I to do?
I had to learn it all the hard way, everything I found out.
And now I want to holler, now I want to shout.
You may say that I'm complaining, and that may be a fact.
You see I keep my suitcase handy, but I do not keep it packed.
I know that life is a story, but that does not mean unreal.
There are chapters sweet as honey, and some are crumbs for a meal.
When I am caught up in a song, babe, I'm a satisfied man.
