Stand your ground, know your worth!I'm sure a few of you by now have seen the recent ridiculousness regarding a job posted in the forums for a rather "epic" scene to be illustrated "at the starting price of $30".Stand your ground, know your worth!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I will do my very best to keep this short (and hopefully organized), but I want everyone to really get a good feel for this and why it's so important.
*****This applies to both hobbyist and professional artists*****
I know that a lot of you do not do art for a living. You may do art as supplemental income, or maybe you do it strictly for fun. But I want to make something very clear to each and every one of you that does art: if you have the skills, no matter what you consider yourself in regards to the arts industry, make sure you are getting paid for the WORK you are putting in.
So to summarize a lot of what all the fuss with job posting is/was about.
In the job posting the OP is basically looking for the cheapest possible price they can get by way of 'barterin

A response to getting Scammed. What Happened:A response to getting Scammed.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It has been a while, but about a month ago, I was scammed by a rather comical fellow who got two artworks out of me and a couple others for free. His approach was quite simple: Have somebody do a single small portion of an image's creation, then leapfrog it to another guy to also do a small portion. The images were, in all honesty, very simple affairs; just easy single-character compositions of a World of Warcraft character that didn't have a whole lot of detail to her.
It started off with one guy doing a quick sketch of her, then another guy doing a quick inking, and then while those two were chasing on his heels demanding payment, he managed to sneak it off to me for colors before the other two caught on they were scammed and called him out.
Thus, when the news broke, it was on me. I had just finished my portion, and luckily for the scammer, he was sent the completed high resolution files just a couple hours before I discovered that I too wasn'

How to troll a white supremacist1. Tell them that colonialism destroyed any chance of white people "having their own country". If they happen to live in America or Australia, or anywhere that isn't Europe, tell them to haul their arses back to Europe. If they support a racist or restrictive immigration policy, point out the fact that any American who isn't a descendent of the native Americans is an immigrant, or a descendent of one, period. How to troll a white supremacist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
2. If they site sources, look at them. How long ago were the studies done? Is there a similar consensus today? If the source is reliable, what was the actual message? Is the message the importance of teaching children about the reality of racism or the differences between human beings? What about the effects of racism on society? Expect them to cherry pick.
3. If they talk about how unintelligent other races are, or if they talk about how they introduce poverty, point out the fact that centuries of being treated as subhuman doesn't go away all that easily.

A small talk about pricing your artYou're creating art. You have the passion, you have the skills. Why not make some money out of it then? It's a good idea, right? A lot of people live from creating art, and even more earn some money on the side by taking commissions. You should give it a shot!A small talk about pricing your art1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So... How much money is your art worth?
It's a hard question to answer for those who are just starting their adventure with selling and creating art for money. Is its worth equal to the price of the materials you used? Is it equal to the value of the time you've spent on creating it? What about the emotional value you put into it? Should your education influence your prices?
No matter if art is your job, hobby or a pastime, you should never undervalue it. In this article I will try to give some tips as to how assess the value of your artwork and touch the problem of too low prices.
We're in it for the money.
Let's be honest - if you're reading this then you probably want

Hmm. I tried to say more in this journal but it would probably sound corny, or seem to have some strange underlying meaning. I guess my advice is to enjoy the people around you while you can, and if there were people in your life who are now gone... remember them for the good times you had, not the minor issues or arguments you had with them, because if you were close with them for any length of time...they couldn't have been all bad. <D I've figured out it's harder and more unpleasant to remember someone with hatred than it is with fondness for the good times you had with them.
But anyway, the real point I'm making here is that my attention span cannot get through the movie Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

From the clothesline strung across the backyard, to the college dorm laundry rooms, to the inner city all-night Laundromats, we all have our memories that begin with helping Mom with Laundry Day, that task that soon became ours alone upon taking flight from the family nest. Laundry day can evoke warm memories of family unity, or cold memories of aching separation and loneliness, the softness of a stack of fresh towels or the hardness of city sidewalks, depending on the time in you life you are remembering. Here is a collection of deviations evoking the full range of Laundry Day duality.
The Triumph ProjectDr. Maya Angelou, a literary and cultural luminary, died this Wednesday. While glowing words have and will continue to be spoken about her talent, activism, and dauntless spirit, she is honored especially for her body of work. She took her own suffering and the suffering of others and, through her words, transfigured that suffering into triumphant art.The Triumph Project8 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Some of us in Community Relations invite you to participate in a new Project in remembrance of Dr. Angelou, one that grew out of a suggestion by Aeirmid. Together, we'll be creating art about triumph, be it personal, societal, or even hypothetical. At the end of the project, all deviations will be featured. This isn't a contest; it is a way for us to use our talents, following Dr. Angelou's example, to enrich our community.
What counts as triumphant? That's up to you. It could be a non-fiction biographical account of an historic leader, or an autobiographical poem about a personal moment of triumph.
Molestine XDso I have been seeing these things on Da recently.. something called Moleskine...Molestine XD9 months ago in Personal More Like This
and i never knew what it was until my friend told me it was like a sketchbook.
so what is so special about it?
well clearly people drew stuff in it with markers and with copics, some even with acrylics so it must have some really high quality paper.
so my husband and i, on our way to my parents house for the Easter, came across a bookstore that sold these. so we decided to give them a try
also lol inside they even have the-- if found return to.. and reward.. lol i just couldn't resist putting something far more valuable XDDD
and wow.. I'll be damned, the paper looked really thin, but it never bled over to the other side O_O IM GONNA MOLEST THE SHIT OUT OF THIS MOLESKINE. with markers of course XD
oh and also.. Easter was a blast spent with family.
my hubby drew me a Vlad on one of the eggs, so ofc i had to return a favour by drawing Ally on his XDDD

A Few Thoughts during My Social Services It has been eight months since I started my mandatory Substitute Services in the nursing institution. My duty here is simple, live in there and do whatever my supervisor told me to. So apart from doing therapeutic activity as an occupational therapist, I also need to sweep the floor, bring water supply to the rooms, transfer heavy goods from a truck or even bring entertainment to the children of the institution. For example, last month, to celebrate Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, the institution was having an outdoor barbecue, and we four Substitute Services Draftees was assigned to “DANCE” on the stage! Not only that, they also want some popular dancing songs or at least exciting songs to give those children some “highness”. For that, they approve us to dance ”bar bar bar” by Crayon Pop and “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO. Therefore, my comrade and I had to practice dancing many nights and then dance in front of one hundreds childA Few Thoughts during My Social Services5 months ago in Personal More Like This

Robert Evans (PSAS), a longtime member of the deviantART community, has succeeded in making a radical artistic statement about turning artists' visions into actual realities.
Robert's pathway to actualization of his vision was facilitated by forward-thinking executives at Lexus who reached out to the creative cutting edge, to deviantART artists, for new revolutionary design ideas for the production of their 2014 Lexus IS. The Lexus IS Design Contest was born and dA's Robert Evans has come away with the prize: experiencing having his personal artistic conceptualization of how an automobile should look and roll become a real world reality. As Grand Prize Winner, the new Lexus built to Robert's design was debuted at the SEMA auto show in Las Vegas before 60,000 US and international buyers and then featured at the Los Angeles Auto Show before 12,000 industry decision-makers and 4,000 media correspondents from 50 countries.
TO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS/STUDENTS...It's amazing how setting goals can make you unhappy.TO THE ASPIRING ARTISTS/STUDENTS...1 month ago in Personal More Like This
For a long time, I've always thought to myself: "I'm not quite as good, but I will be once I've met my goal." Or, " Once I've reached my goal, I'll be happy, I'll be successful." I'm sure that I am not alone in this mode of thinking and as a result we ultimately push our own happiness to the back, unless we accomplish some major milestone.
We place ridiculous stress on ourselves to lose weight, get a promotion...finishing a comic or whatever.
But I think setting goals seem useless without a system or process in place to reach them. I'm learning more that it's important to understand the difference between goals & systems. The goal is the desired end result, the system is the process, or practice that (if committed to) eventually gets you there. Focusing on practice instead of performance allows you to be present, and improve at the same time. Planning progress (Goal) vs. Making progress (System).
Let's commit to

THE NORTH AMERICAN FIRE DRAKE
Height: 15 - 18 ft
The North American Fire Drake is one of the more common dragons to find on this continent, and typically make their homes within the deserts or high above in caves of mountains. In times before the land was so vastly populated, the Fire Drake quite commonly would hoard gold and various minerals in their abodes, so that their hatchlings could consume it and harden their scales faster. Though their scales naturally harden over time, the minerals quicken the pace, heightening the chances of the hatchling's survival in the wild.
The Fire Drake is a very social creat

I wanted you to know some things.
I failed your algebra class in 9th grade, pretty much on purpose. I know. That's a fairly common story, and not that surprising. We clashed a little. I remember asking the typical questions, like "What will I ever use this for? I'm gonna be an artist!"
Here's the first irony of the story. I've never used algebra in my life except for fun. I got into war-gaming and had to figure out stuff like collision equations. It's the Algebra Teacher's Revenge.
But the real story here is what you didn't do. You didn't reject me, or look down on me, or nag me or drag me down. You just accepted my decision to be stupid and let it slide. This made for some of my fondest memories of school. Discussions about how the world works, playing chess with other students and trying to figure out your hanoi tower puzzle, all in an atmosphere of acceptance.
What this produced was that when the true irony of my life materialized, my profession as a teacher, it
