Maleficent is here...I'm still in Disney mood so after watching some great trailers for Maleficent I figured I would have a look to see how she has been portrayed here before the Jolie version becomes the new archetype. Is it just me or is there something about beautiful and powerful villainesses? - anyway, here are some great examples.Maleficent is here...10 months ago in Personal More Like This

suggesting DD's (daily deviations)Edit on Sept 3, 2013: I changed this article a bit after I had a friendly chat with some of the (former) volunteers and senior members of the website. I hope the details help you in making even better submissionssuggesting DD's (daily deviations)2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Everybody on DeviantArt seems to know about the Daily Deviations, or DD's. The handful of artworks that makes it to the frontpage every day. The artworks that are shown at the bottom of the site all day long, and get loads of exposure. I guess they're the wet dream for many people on DA.
DD's are usually a reason for discussion. I can't even begin to count the topics on the forums that are about why some deviations are chosen over others, and how the quality of those deviations keep declining year after year. Not many people know, however, that's it's not entirely up to the staff which works are picked. And that we can have our own vote on this.
So I can have an influence
How beautiful do you have to be to be loved?A photographer like me who portrays beautiful women is sometimes accused of damaging people. Why? Because we raise the bar for everybody to an unhealthy level. We give wrong expectations of how you or a partner worthy of you are supposed to look. We use all the tricks to make the people in the pictures always look perfect and beautiful – how can a normal person keep up with this? How beautiful do you have to be to be loved?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, from my point of view the answer is simple, maybe too simple for you: you don't have to keep up with this. In a funny way I face the same problem as you, but from the other side: how can I keep up with you? You have not only your looks, you have your own unique way. You have your personality, your style. You have your way of walking and talking. You can make a real connection with somebody. You can touch them. You can make them feel your caress. You can make their heart pound.
How can I as a photographer keep up with this? I only have a stupid picture, how can I make someone's heart pound?

Israel trip post + pic spamHallooo. I just came back from a 14-day tour around to various biblical and historical sites in Israel and Jordan. Writing things down before I forget it all >< already my memory is kind of muddled.Israel trip post + pic spam1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Just a warning this is REALLY REALLY LONG and VERY IMAGE HEAVY - I am not even exaggerating. I skipped over a lot already but it's still humongous. Took me 4 days just to write it.
Anyway, in loose chronological order here goes:
Our flight was 9 hours from US to Germany, then another 4-5 hours from Germany to Israel. We went with a group of around 70, about half of which are my friends/acquaintances.
I couldn't sleep on the flight but luckily the movie selection was pretty good. I watched at least 5 movies including the Rurouni Kenshin live action, twice, and eventually a 3rd time on the flight back. Sato Takeru is a really good Kenshin =w=
As usual the cabin air is really dry and the little jar of moisturizer I tossed into my backpack as an afterthought turned out to be a life

Believe in Yourself. Nobody Else Will. This last 6 months saw the turn around of all the people in my life (as in everyone) asking me to quit art and focus on something else. I no longer receive constant suggestions of other careers that I should pursue. I'm sure many of you have had awkward conversations with strangers or elderly people about your desire to become an artist. I had one today (she told me art was not a feasible career). Only now my belief in myself is at 100% so that person walked away believing in me as well.Believe in Yourself. Nobody Else Will.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I could go on about my personal journey and about how butthurt I was that people weren't acknowledging the work that I was doing; the sacrifice that I was making, but most of you can relate as well. I actually developed quite an ego. A feeling that I was better than all of them, and that they were just ignorant assholes. Was that productive? I'm not sure. Would it be productive now that I'm entering galleries and doing shows (schedule coming soon)? FUCK NO!
Ultimately one of the best things I heard as

How To Sell Your Original PaintingsHow To Sell Your Original PaintingsHow To Sell Your Original Paintings1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In this article I will be discussing how to sell your original paintings. If your a artist you know how intimidating this can be when you've decided to venture into sales. It may even leave you with doubts about your own work, lower your confidence as a artist, and a bit fearful. Well have no fear! I have some tips from personal experience, as well as online references and advice from fellow artists that will help with your sales.
The First Step
Before we get into 'the meat' of things your very first step is Believe in yourself. Be confident about the accomplishments you've made. If your contemplating selling anything then you have to know you're good at what you do. Let that be your mantra as an artist. Understand that how you've acquired your skills, what you choose to paint, what your art looks like, and how

This is a thing people often wonder and think it's a complicated to find out, but it is actually pretty simple. It's a different question you need to ask yourself based on different topics.
As for: Fuck talent! You'll find it if you scroll down
Topic 1: Am I on the right track to becoming a better artist?
Does your work from today, look closer to your initial goal than your work from last week? (this needs to be both in skill and idea.)
Good skills: Honing your technique, training you muscle memory, being more knowledgeable about your tools and art rules. With art rules I mean: Perspective, form, light, texture, composition.
Good ideas: Storytelling, characteristics, charm, emotion and design. Not just making things look polished but also convey something more, something that brings it to life and speaks to pe
the adventures of an art student!I don't usually write notes here (I'm not even sure if anyone will see this) but I thought since this is a platform for artists/aspiring artists I guess I can write here because I am sure people here go through the same dilemma. Sometimes I wonder if I am even an artist but of course what makes an artist an artist is subjective...the adventures of an art student!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As an art student, life indeed is far from a bed of roses, we can't just do "anything we like" (defying the popular misconception), right now I'm so bummed out I keep getting pieces of advice from lecturers that are usually polar opposites. There comes the question "Who should I listen to?" While it may always seem like the rosiest answer to "go with your instinct" maybe sometimes personal instinct isn't always the best because we are often blind to our own mistakes. I know it sounds shallow but at times I feel like I follow certain pieces of advice just so I won't get a bad grade, even if I don't necessarily agree with it. Grades aren't everything but a part

Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing BabiesOkay so one of the biggest subjects within portraiture photography are infants and children! Children and in particular newborn babies bring out the photographer in all of us. So whether or not you're looking to go pro and snap babies professionally or whether you just want to brush up on some tips for your own family or friends, this could be the article for you! I always thought that when I got my first baby shoot booked, it would just be a case of snapping them on the carpet or wrapped up in a blanket. I had no idea how creative I could really get - and how simply it would be to do that.Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing Babies2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Until a few weeks ago, I had never photographed a baby in my life, let alone had to pose and arrange one in cute positions with lots of fluffy toys surrounding it. I had also never used a lighting kit before, but that's another story. Anyway, I found it incredibly easy once I knew what i needed, to set up for the shoot and since then I haven't looked back. Whether yo

You MUST be a premium member on dA to use the code.
You must create the image at the size it will appear in the module, these images do not tile, therefore it is best to create a static image with as small a file size as possible so that it does not take too long to load.

That's how you get pageviewsAnd here you have the number one question that people ask me:That's how you get pageviews10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
"How the hell did you get so many people to view your art? You're not even that good!"
I can't do anything other than honestly admitting that I'm not that good at art. I'm not some awesomely skilled concept artist, at least. I've seen many people do a better job while receiving a lot less of attention.
Why a medium like DeviantArt works for me? Probably because I've been around on the internet for so long, and I've spend so much time working for internet-marketing company's, that things like advertising and web usability have become a second nature to me. A lot of the things that I've come to regard as common sense in internet communication, are things that are nowadays proven successful by research.
It's important to know that websites like DeviantArt are listed in the category social media. That probably didn't occur to most people, since DeviantArt seems to be so heavily focused towards art (and tradi

For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership. (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical proce

Why credit and notify?Hi all,Why credit and notify?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.
What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t
My deviantART StoryIt has now been over 10 years since I first decided to join deviantART and little did I know then, this decision would end up forging my entire life and career. My deviantART Story7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I wish I remembered exactly how it all started, but I'm going to go with my best guess and say I heard about it from another student when I started college back when I had just turned 18. Up until then I had been using various art forums such as wcreplays.com, animex.com, sijun.com and cgsociety.org so the discovery of a portfolio website was a pretty cool thing.
I started posting on here and got moderate attention, I had been drawing for a long time at that point so my art was in a state where it was at least interesting to look at. If anything it was a fantastic place to get inspiration and look at art from amazingly talented artists.
It wasn't until I decided to color the line-art for the following piece that everything really started.
Photography Troubleshooting: FiltersThis week we bring you another issue of Photography Troubleshooting to hopefully give you some tips and explanations behind how to make use of some photography accessories. If you have a question, query or any thoughts you wish to see discussed just drop us a comment or note!Photography Troubleshooting: Filters3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
"The use of filters, how to pick them and examples of situations where they would be helpful...."
Hi moria330, filters are a good way of diversifying your photographic opportunities without spending a great deal of money (though, granted, many of the better quality filters can get to be relatively expensive).
In film photography, filters were used a lot more extensively then they are today thanks to the nature of the medium.
For example colour filters were used for white balance purposes on colour films that were balanced for different light types, so, you could shoot artificial light balanced film under daylight if you had a filter that corrected for it.
