I told ~fischfrau I'd submit a picture of the polar bear baby that was born Dec 10, 2004 at the local zoo, so here's the little one.
Yes, I know, the gate in the background screems prison. I don't like the background either, but there's nothing I could do about. Their enclosure is definitely among the less attractive ones...

A polar bear scratching his leg. Those animals are SO huge. I knew they were big, but I've never seen one before my visit at the zoo (or at least I can't remember).

Long ago, there was a world that was afflicted by a curse. The sky was shrouded in darkness and its people were forever searching for food to fill their empty souls.

Then one day, the skies were lit up by golden rays, and its source was a small bird with crimsom feathers.
The bird was known as a Maycaw, and it was a being that was sent from the heavens.
The people watched as the bird flew down and tried to reach for it. They were very hungry and saw the Maycaw as food.

Then a girl from the crowd cried out.
"Stop! We may be in pain from this hunger, but must we kill an innocent life just to fulfill our selfish desires?"
The girl went to rescue the bird from the hands of the people and took it away from danger.

The Maycaw was impressed by the girl's kindness and said.
"Thankyou for saving me, I can remove the curse on you and take you to a place where you can be happy."
The girl shook her head and refused the offer.
"Even if I went to this paradise, I would never be happy knowning that these people are still suffering. I would rather stay here and suffer with them until the curse is lifted from all of us."

The Maycaw nodded then removed the curse on the girl and bestowed her with his power. The girl was cloaked in crimsom and was given one wish.

With the power of the Maycaw, the girl made a prayer to the Gods. She made a wish that the curse that was afflicted on her people was removed.

Then a miracle happened, the sky lit up again and food fell from the heavens. The people fed on this food and the curse was lifted. With the curse gone, the skies turned blue and the grass regained its green color.

The girl and the Maycaw watched from a distance, then the Maycaw spoke once again.
"Your desire to save these people was so strong that it reached the Gods. Your wish was granted and you have given life to these people.
You are truly their mother, and they will need your guidance to become good people."

The girl nodded and accepted the responsibilty.
"If I am their mother, then I will use all my power to teach them the laws placed down by the Gods. I will watch over them forever.
These people are my children and I will name them Maycawians."

Sixth piece in my Predators in the Wild Collection - For Sale [link]

Polar Bear, completed in soft pastels. I loved this picture, the bear was superb to paint, the fur picks up all the colours around, so he was an interesting subject. Certainly one of my favourites.
