Chesterton, Our Lady, and awesome poetryTime for another weekly dose of Chestertonian awesomeness. This one comes from The Ballad of the White Horse, which is one of the most amazing, beautiful, and epic poems ever penned in the English languages. I highly recommend reading it, though I highly recommend reading everything Chesterton wrote. These are the words spoken by Our Lady to the broken King Alfred.Chesterton, Our Lady, and awesome poetry2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Knight of ChristToday is my confirmation day! Confirmed into the Catholic Church AS AN ADULT!!! AND IT MY DAD'S BIRTHDAY!!!!Knight of Christ2 years ago in Personal More Like This
NO ONE SHALL RUIN MY DAY NOW!!!
I went to confirmation. I wasn't expecting my grandparents to be so happy for me because, well, they're not Catholic, but what a suprise.
Other than that. I feel like I am now a knight of Christ.
There was the Knights of Columbus there, and they saluted to all the candidates. Made me feel honored. And welcomed into the Catholic Church as if I'm a knight of Christ.
Haha, now I need dog tags that say DG Sommer; Knight of Christ
Thanksgiving for 2011 and Hope for 2012Well, I just want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year!Thanksgiving for 2011 and Hope for 20122 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm sure many people have already seen this video, a lot of people have been posting it on blogs and things, but I thought I'd link it as well http://youtu.be/DCRosY4sw7Y Top Ten Reasons for Hope from CatholicVote.org. Rather heartwarming video.
For the new year 2012, I had the idea that as a resolution every committed Christian could decide that they would all in their power to bring at least one person to Christ.
~marykyart and myself have had the idea of posting weekly awesome Catholics quotes (particularly from Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, and St. Augustine, the three most quotable Christian authors of all time). So... in honor of the last day of the year, I will share the following awesome quote from the estimable Jack Lewis:

Devious Journal EntryAbout San Judas TadeoDevious Journal Entry2 years ago in Personal More Like This
St. Jude is one of the most popular saints, because of the many heavenly favors getting his devotees to pray with faith. In Germany, Italy, America and many other places, has many devotees who get through his intercession admirable aid of God, especially as to get a job, house or other benefits more.
St. Bridget has in its revelations that the Lord told you that you wanted to get certain favors the request by St. Jude.
Judas is a Hebrew word meaning "praise be to God."
Tadeo means "courageous to proclaim their faith."
Simon means "God has heard my cry." A St. Simon and St. Jude are celebrating the feast on the same day, October 28, because according to ancient tradition the two were always together preaching the Word of God everywhere.
St. Jude Thaddeus was closely related to our Lord for his relationship with Saint Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin. Nephew of these two saints, is both a nephew of Mary and Joseph, he is the cousin of our Lord Jesus C
St. Augustine on TemptationWell I decided to continue with the weekly quotations on Sundays. So this one comes from St. Augustine, one of the most quotable Christian authors of all time. Really good stuff. Today is the First Sunday of Lent, when the Gospel discusses the temptation of Jesus in the desert. So I thought this would be appropriate. It's from the Office of Readings for today, which I encourage everyone to do.St. Augustine on Temptation2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Hear, O God, my petition, listen to my prayer. Who is speaking? An individual, it seems. See if it is an individual: I cried to you from the ends of the earth while my heart was in anguish. Now it is no longer one person; rather, it is one in the sense that Christ is one, and we are all his members. What single individual can cry from the ends of the earth? The one who cries from the ends of the earth is none ot
March 4 LifeGot back from the March for Life in Washington D.C. yesterday. It was pretty awesome, even though I rode on a bus to get there (over 24 hrs, one-way XP). Thankfully it was on a charter bus and we watched a lot of movies and I slept half the time. This was my 3rd year to participate, but my first to not travel by plane. After a long drive, we arrived in D.C. and were greeted by a blanket of snow, something which comes only once or twice a year in Texas if you're lucky. The Youth for Life Mass at the Verizon Center was really nice. The cool thing about it was that there were people from Australia there. Also, one of the youth ministers that traveled with my group knew Jackie Francois, one of the music entertainers at the mass. We were waving our Texas flag, and she gave us a shout out. I have to say, the March itself went pretty well, except my group stayed back in the Verizon Center to eat lunch, so ended up near the end of the crowd. There was one group having a techno dance party, soMarch 4 Life2 years ago in Personal More Like This

A Hymn of Praise to the LORD
15 The LORD made the earth by his power,
and he preserves it by his wisdom.
With his own understanding
he stretched out the heavens.

He causes the clouds to rise over the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain

for their carefully shaped works are a fraud.
These idols have no breath or power.

What now can be more awful than these things? For in truth the Church was a heaven then, the Spirit governing all things, and moving each one of the rulers and making him inspired. But now we retain only the symbols of those gifts. For now also we speak two or three, and in turn, and when one is silent, another begins. But these are only signs and memorials of those things. Wherefore when we begin to speak, the people respond, with your Spirit , indicating that of old they thus used to speak, not of their own wisdom, but moved by the Spirit. But not so now: (I speak of my own case so far.) But the present Church is like a woman who has fallen from her former prosperous days, and in many respects retains the symbols only of that ancient prosperity; displaying indeed the repositories and caskets of her golden o

Happy feast of the Assumption!!!!Happy feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary!! Technically, today is the main feastday for the Blessed Mother, at least in my book. Normal saints have their feastdays on the day they died, and whether or not Mary actually "died" (I'm of the opinion that she did, in a fashion - I'd love to discuss it), this is the day her earthly life came to an end, so... Happy feast day Mary!!!!!! So, I offer you some meditations and prayers and things for the day. But my favorite was from a book I read, which noted how this feastday really is about how the Blessed Mother was the first woman in space! We Catholics made it to space first! See, that's why Pope Pius XII declared it dogmatically in the 1950s, when communism and the Soviets were running around trying to make it to Space. He was actually quite the scientific fellow, so this was his little "Vatican space program". And he beat Sputnik by about 7 years. Woot!! In any case, let us all enter into the praise of the mother of God thisHappy feast of the Assumption!!!!2 years ago in Personal More Like This

This is my second journal entry now. Someday I shall probably make a more formal introduction to my readers, but for the moment you must satisfy yourselves with a certain aura of mystique and guess what you can. [XD]
I will be giving up computer for Lent, which means no dA. I'll occasionally get on on Sundays, and try to answer messages and things. I'm hoping to get a LOT of reading and drawing and writing done. I'm reading so many books currently, mostly spiritual reading but some other stuff like Les Miserables. Still plowing through that monster, should be done fairly soon I hope. I plan on writing a long poem about the Passion.
So Lent is on the horizon, and starts on Ash Wednesday which is... this coming Wednesday. I'd like to share a link to Pope Benedict's message for Lent this year, http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/b

After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene came with the other Mary to inspect the tomb. Suddenly there was a mighty earthquake, as the angel of the Lord descended from heaven. He came to the stone, rolled it back, and sat on it. In appearance he resembled a flash of lightning while his garments were dazzling as snow. The guards grew paralyzed with fear of him and fell down like dead men.
Then the angel spoke, addressing the women: "Do not be frightened. I know you are looking for Jesus the crucified, but he is not here. He has been raised, exactly as he promised. Come and see the place where he was laid. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has been raised from the dead and now goes ahead of you to Galilee, where you

Surrexist Pastor bonus, qui animam suam posuit pro ovibus suis, et pro grege suo mori dignatus est, alleluia!
The Good Shepherd is risen! He who laid down His life for His sheep, who died for the flock, he is risen, alleluia!
The readings at Mass focus today on Christ's role as the shepherd. He calls Himself the good shepherd (who lays down His life for His sheep). We are the sheep, He is the shepherd - He is also the gate. He is also the lamb of God. The preface for Mass today reads "As he offered his body on the cross, his sacrifice fulfilled all others. As he gave himself unto your hands for our salvation, he showed himself to be the priest, the altar, and the lamb of sacrifice." He is the shepherd, He is the lamb. He is our guide, with his staff, that leads us through the valley of despair

In my last post I called on Catholics to band together to evangelize deviantArt. I was disappointed to hear great reservations about this from some Catholics on here (but pleased to see many enthusiastic responses as well), so in response I thought I would post some quotes from the Holy Father speaking of evangelization particularly in reference to new media and the internet. Pope Benedict has said a LOT about evangelization during his pontificate, but here are just a few things mostly in reference to the internet and our situation on deviantArt.
Santa: The True StoryFirst of all Santa wears red because he was a Bishop.Santa: The True Story2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Bishop Nicholas was very rich. But the Christian man around the corner was very poor. The poor Christian man had 3 daughters all at the marrying age. And usually (around that time) most of the girls that don't get married become prostitutes. So their father didn't want that to happen to them. He went into the church and prayed to God to protect his daughters from evil. So Bishop Nick overheard him praying and felt bad. So later that night, the Bishop found the poor man's tiny house, and threw a bag of money into his window (enough to get all 3 of his daughters married). All 3 daughters were married! So St. Nick brought joy to everyone. And thus creating SANTA CLAUS.
And that's why I believe in Santa Claus. And he's real today because now he's an angel.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!! GOD BLESS EVERYONE!!!!!!

The Beethoven Incident
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest (non-reciprocal) review.
"The Beethoven Incident" is a fairly fast-paced and light-hearted read. I didn't get the feeling that it was meant to change someone's life. It felt more like it was just meant to be a quick bit of fun.
There were parts I enjoyed, such as Mark calling Nicholas his dad and Valeria catching on quickly that it wasn't true, and seeing how different periods in the past were changed.
There were also major issues, though.
Here's an example of one of the paragraphs:
"Quite right." He turned to his pilot, "Well, Ernest?" Ernie punched a few keys and looked at his control panel. "In a minute, Nick" he replied. "I just gotta scan the payload for mass and volume. We'll be all set." He punched a few keys a
