Sins of an ArtistI've been under fire recently for having the audacity to admit publicly that improving my art has never been, and never was, an ultimate goal of mine. Apparently that's like committing some sort of mortal sin in the art community. I've had trouble expressing myself about it too, because brushing off improvement for improvement sake makes me look like I'm uncaring, egocentric, and stubborn. But after a recent post I was given much more clarity in understanding the issue and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.Sins of an Artist4 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the recent exchange I was basically told this: "If doing what you love isn't about dedicating your life to improving your art, you aren't an artist."
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but making art has never been solely about the technical expertise. Even in college, outside the handful of foundation courses you take in freshman year, perfection of the craft is often secondary to concepts and ideas and your ability to evoke feelings and emotions in your audience.
25 Things I learned being a Comic Artist in 2011The following list contains intense amounts of SARCASM for the purpose of satire and humor.25 Things I learned being a Comic Artist in 20114 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Never offer artistic advice or hint at the possibility that the way young and inexperienced groups of artists work might in some way be flawed.
2. Every comic must be inherently drawn better and be funnier than the last.
3. Humor is NOT relative/subjective.
4. Nothing is funny. Ever.
5. Even the most trivial aspects of your comic must be taken 100% seriously.
6. Failure to incorporate conflicting suggestions for improvement = incapable of accepting criticism.
7. Trying to quelch flame wars also inexplicably = incapable of accepting criticism.
8. Trying to explain your artistic decisions = incapable of accepting criticism.
9. Having lots of watchers = having an inflated ego.
10. Reaching the frontpage = getting Daily Deviation.
11. Every character you draw (even ones you do for commission/jobs) = your personal opinions and beliefs which you must obviously follow rigidly IRL.
12. Never change y

DON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah BradleyDon't go to art schoolDON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah Bradley2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The traditional approach is failing us. It's time for a change.
I'VE HAD IT.
I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won't do it. Unless you're given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money.
I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. I'm not some flaky, disgruntled art graduate, either. I have a quite successful career, thankyouverymuch.
But I am saddened and ashamed at art schools and their blatant exploitation of students. Graduates are woefully ill-prepared for the realities of being professional artists and racked with obscene amounts of debt. By their own estimation, the cost of a four year education at RISD is $245,816. As way

You may name your mech concept, the corporation that develop the mech and the backdrop story of the corporation.
The mech should stand approximately 10 feet or 3 metres, show the size of the mech in a simple way. Keep in mind that each part of the mech will be interchangeable with other mech parts as featured in Armored Core.
Remember each entry consists of 2 .JPG or 2 PNG file both in black and white. One file should include a front, back and side concept art and the second should be the same as the front, back and side entry including labeling explaining where everything is.
*There may be 1 or 2 eyes. (The eye actually house the camera of the mech)
*For the ears section of the head make sure to create an attachable section left and right for radar parts, make them discrete.
* Connection for head
* Left and right connection slot for arms.
* Towards the top rear of the core make discrete left and right connection slots for back weapons attachments and such.
Materials ListIf you have any questions about repainting, please check this list first! My repaint tutorial is just a little bit outdated when it comes to materials. - 100% pure acetone (found in the beauty supply sections) make sure it's colorless, and cotton swabs. I used to use Windsor & Newton Brush cleaner, which worked okay, but acetone is less expensive and wiped everything off easier. Do not allow it to drip onto hard plastics (such as the body) as it will melt the plastic and release fumes.
- Cling wrap, painter's tape, and masking tape; these are for wrapping your doll's hair and body to protect it from being sprayed with sealant or getting scratched/dirty. If sealant sprays onto the dolls hair, the hair becomes coated in dried, white, sealant that is difficult to remove.
- Respirator. I us
ForeverEveryone has some kind of life philosophy or creed that they live by. It's not quite a religion, although some like Buddhism are on the edge. You probably have your own, and it's usually related to how you perceive death or wonder what's going to happen afterwards. Some people devote their lives to their religion in order to gain access to their afterlife. Some people believe that we all become dust in the wind and the best you can do is leave a legacy, and some people will use that philosophy to wallow in hedonism.Forever3 months ago in Personal More Like This
No matter how religious you are, your concern or lack thereof of death does seem to define at least to some extent, your life. What do I believe? The definition of being an agnostic is "I don't know, and I'm not going to perchance a guess." My religious beliefs are closest to atheism, since I have trouble in believing in an omnipotent god. A god who is not omnipotent is easy for me to believe in, but very few modern religions have that caveat. However, one tenant of atheism
Updates for April 1stLooks like my April Fools joke went over pretty well. I was quite surprised to see the response, honestly! Was it the most original prank in the books? Absolutely not, but considering that I usually ignore April Fools Day and that people STILL believed it, I think it's alright. Sometimes the oldest jokes are the best and it's not like this was a contest trying to outdo everyone around me. Just having some fun for a change, which is something I need to do more often.Updates for April 1st4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Also, it shows how many people actually followed the link. Anyone who read the journal and followed the link to the trolololo song would've known it was a joke. But it seems a LOT of people didn't bother doing that, hehe.
Speaking of April Fools though, did you know that it was 4 years ago today that I began the Alex Ze Pirate web series? April 1st, 2008 was the day I began posting short one page gags involving my pirate characters on SheezyArt. It's kinda hard to believe it's only been 4 years as so much has happened since
Mini ReviewsLately there've been a number of TV shows and other nerdy things I've been meaning to get into but just haven't had the time. Today I'm just gonna give my first impressions of a couple of them. Keep in mind that aside from relative familiarity, I know pretty much nothing about all these series, so if I sound harsh I hope you can forgive me!Mini Reviews4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Game of Thrones
I've been hearing so much about this series and how amazing it is. I know that the actor Peter Dinklage has received a number of awards for his performance. I also know that HBO tends to do really good series from time to time. So I had expectations that this was also going to be good.
First 5 minutes. Yeah it was good. Everything after that? Eehh...
Granted now, I've only seen the first episode, but honestly the first episode should really HOOK you into the series. Start off with a bang to get you psyched then spend the rest of the series building up the characters and making us care about them, ending with a great climax mak
MCBA Spring Con 2012 AftermathWhile MCBA was lots of fun like it always it, this year it seemed a bit quieter for some reason. Business was quite good on Saturday, but on Sunday it died off quite a bit.MCBA Spring Con 2012 Aftermath4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I got to meet a lot of fans from DA, and one group in particular (dressed as homestuck trolls no less) even gave me a tiny fluttershy figurine! That was really cute, thank you!
I had a lot of sketch cards on Saturday, ending with me running out of paper. When I came back on Sunday I brought extra just in case, but found I didn't need it. Sunday was pretty dead and while I got a few orders early in the day, I didn't sell more than that.
Pretty cool that this year they had the ECTO1 from Ghostbusters there. In the past they've always had the Batman mobiles or the Delorean from Back to the Future, so being able to see the ECTO1 was a nice change of pace.
I talked with a guy for almost 2 hours on animation history and Disney, which was a lot of fun. I also go to give some advice on how to get rid of those "artifacts" th
Moving on... CONTEST! WOO!That last journal was a doozie wasn't it? Let's do something fun instead and get our minds out of the muddy waters of art definitions for a minute.Moving on... CONTEST! WOO!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been asked to do a mini drawing competition. Kinda like what :iconhumon: just did. So here's a really basic run down of the rules in no way copied and pasted from her journal with minor alterations: j/k
The Drawing Competition:
1. Draw any of TomPreston's characters (SYAC, Alex Ze Pirate, or any smaller groups) in London.
2. Upload the image to your dA gallery.
3. Comment on this journal (or the main Fresh Epics comment box) with a link to your image.
- I'll then +Fav/add to collection it.
- I'll look though the collection and pick the winners.
Winners will get Alex Ze Pirate book 2 and SYAC Book 1, plus posters! YAY!
It should go without saying but parodies, trolling, hate art, or explicit sexual stuff = instant disqualifying. I mean, that should be a given but it needs to be said I suppose.
Deadline: A week from today: May 16th.
The Avengers - ReviewHonestly I don't have much to say other than it's just really awesome. You don't need to have seen Captain America, Iron Man 1 and 2, The Hulk, or Thor to understand what's going on, but it most certainly does help. The Avengers - Review4 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Avengers is probably one of the most epic movies I have seen since the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Harry Potter. It's up there. It's not perfect, and some moments seem to drag on a bit (mostly around the middle), but every key moment is accentuated properly, every line delivered in such a way that you don't miss out on what's going on, every action scene composed in a way you aren't confused, and overall the whole thing is just a joy to watch.
What's really fun about this movie is that they don't hold back. Ever. Everything you want to see in a movie about the Avengers is pretty much up on this screen. You wanna see Thor and Iron Man duke it out? You got it! You wanna see an army of aliens attacking a city? Got it. You wanna see Tony Stark deliver hilarious banter aga

Taking Care of Yourself
You know it's out there: the dreaded smell of unwashed bodies. At Sakura-Con, it's called H.O.B.O.: Horrible Otaku Body Odor. We here at Sakura-Con have declared the convention a "No H.O.B.O. Zone." To enforce that, we have provided a checklist that will help you keep that smell to an absolute minimum, and your con experience will be much more pleasant. Please remember to bring these things with you!
The Top Twenty Items Forgotten by Convention Attendees (a Checklist)
1. Personal towel. (We know the hotel provides them, but if you're sharing a room with several people, this guarantees you your very own towel. Also, if you plan on using a lot of makeup for a costume or dying your hair and use hotel towels, you will be charged a hefty fee for damaging hotel property. Please bring your own towels if you plan to do this.)
2. Shampoo and conditioner. (Again, the hotel provides these, but the bottles are quite small. Bringing your own ensures you

So a rumor that was leaked, and then possibly confirmed, is that not only is MLP:FiM getting a movie (a direct to video movie I'd wager), but a spin off series as well. This spin off series will be called Equestria Girls and be about the Mane 6 crew being transported to Earth and transformed into humanized versions of themselves.
And bronies are throwing a tantrum, yet again.
I've kinda given up trying to understand brony mentalities these days. You adore the crap out of humanized MLP fanart, but you don't support the idea of it being somehow "official"? I mean, I get that you enjoy the show because you're a niche and unexpected demographic Hasbro should be mining for oodles of cash, but at the same time you all do recognize that the show IS made for little girls and kids in mind, right? It's a giant toy line advertisement through and through, so why are people freaking out over the idea that they introduce characters or scenarios to sell toys? Did none of

If you want power, you need to turn the outlets on, and to do that you gotta push a switch down.
TV has far fewer commercial breaks.
English police are super nice (watched the British version of "COPS" and was amazed at how polite everyone was, even the criminals).
The second floor is called the first.
French Fries are called Chips.
Chips are called Crisps.
American-centric music doesn't stay here (Heard "Sweet Home Alabama" quite a number of times over there).
You are not expected to tip people (this was very hard for me to accept and I always felt guilty not tipping our waiters).
You are not expected to clean up your messes in food courts or.. anywhere actually (Janitors come by and clean up for you. Has something to do with security and getting rid of bomb threats).
Elevators are called Lifts.
Air conditioning seems scarce.

It's That Time Once MoreHello all! It's That Time Once More3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Concerning my last journal post, I've been having quite the difficult time on resolution numero dos--that being to doodle at least once per day to sharpen skills and heighten activity on this page. Sadly, it seems that I've lacked, err, "proper" inspiration as I have completely seem to have lost motivation to draw or doodle in the slightest. And anything I currently produce is not up to par with my earlier works.
However, there seems to be more to it.
For those who may not have known, (pertaining to no one at all haha.) you can safely assume that I mainly draw anime. While this certainly is true, I also have a knack into drawing realism and appear to handle it much better than anime. However, I also seem to have a whacky pattern concerning the two...once I feel that I am "sucking" at one of the two styles, it's a red flag indicating that I should focus on the other and thus I draw the other awfully well (In my case) and vice versa.
As odd as that may sound, this is exactly w
