Back? Not quite...About my breakBack? Not quite...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Despite the increase in activity from me here on DA recently, I'm not entirely "back" in the normal sense of the word. I'm kinda just tip-toeing the waters to see if things have calmed a bit. I'm still trying to get through my issues, with mixed success, and a two month leave of absence isn't going to undo years of stress buildup and stubbornness. But I'm working on it, slowly but surely. You might see some new work here or there, but I don't think I'm ready yet to jump back into doing any of my longer narratives.
In fact, judging by my recent comic's reception, I probably am not ready for a full fledged return just yet...
Kotaku Sunday Comics WIN!
Before I get to the heart of the matter, I would like to thank everyone who voted for brentalfloss over on Kotaku. Kotaku has a weekly feature called "Sunday Comics" where they showcase strips from various game-related web comics and brentalfloss the Comic was up for nomination of being included in the lin
Big Ben ResponseA succinct summary of the recent complaints:Big Ben Response2 years ago in Personal More Like This
"You somehow magically gained the ability to draw near-photorealistic buildings overnight and you choose to use this amazing newfound skill to draw a building in the background? Get serious dude."
This is a redrawing of Big Ben (using a different reference photo BTW) to show that I am actually capable of drawing architecture just fine. I only used the computer for the poster version because I wanted more control over it.
I'm gonna be leaving Big Ben the way it is in the poster. There's nothing to "own up to" about it other than saying "sorry I used such a recognizable image source of a popular and well known landmark as reference." I did not trace.
Curious that so many of the people crying "copyright infringement" over me using reference are also the same people who take my comics and make "parodies" of them by cutting, rearranging, and re-uploading th
Big BenSo in case you haven't heard yet, some kind YouTuber found the reference image I used to draw Big Ben for my London poster, warped and skewed it to match the angle, and made a rather catchy song proclaiming how I traced it while the image flickers back and fourth between the photo and my drawing as "proof."Big Ben2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know I have haters out there, and some of them seem to have unhealthy obsessions with finding fault in everything I do, but this is taking it pretty far, don't you think? Even if it were traced, Big Ben is such an iconic image that you'd be hard pressed to find a different angle to work with, especially since it's box-shaped and all sides look the same.
I should probably point out that if you see pixelation in the tower, it's because the whole image has been reduced and saved at only 60% normal JPEG compression. It's a trick used to keep the image good enough to be seen but bad enough to be printed, thus encouraging sales on the larger non pixelated poster.

Posters, Conventions, CD, and Dr.And I'm back! Well... I guess "technically" I wasn't really gone. But I have been taking a bit of a break from the internet aside from posting updates. It was quite refreshing and hopefully it's been long enough to recharge my batteries because I have a LOT to do!Posters, Conventions, CD, and Dr.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Conventions are creeping up on me. In about a month's time I'm going to be in London and that's got me starting to freak out. I've gotta get enough stock pooled together, find out how to ship it to London without it costing an arm and a leg, and work out my itinerary. I'll also be at the MCBA Spring Con the week before in Minneapolis/St.Paul and then immediately after the London con I'll be in Iowa for QC-Anime Zing! Gyaah!
For the London convention all of us Fresh Epics artists are writing stories for an anthology book. We're all going to be featured in it. Me, Humon, Stupid Fox, Romantically Apocalyptic, Boggart, Acero Tiburon, etc. I'm proud to say I've finally gotten my pages in! Yay!

MCM London ExpoIf you haven't seen anything from me in a while, it's because I'm in London and don't have ready access to the interwebs.MCM London Expo2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Tomorrow is the MCM London Expo. I'll be located at table AB8 in the dealers room NOT in artist alley. So don't look for me in the artist alley because I won't be there! Lol.
Humon and Vitaly have been Trolling each other, which you've probably seen a bit of if you watch either of them. Silly guys...
The convention starts tomorrow and goes through the weekend! Hope to see you there!
PS: I was trying to pick a winner to the contest before I left but ran out of time. Now I won't be able to pick a winner till I get back from London, so sorry about that.
EDIT: I've been informed that we do indeed have an artist alley table... So... I haven't got the foggiest idea where I will be located now. Best to just look all over then! Sorry..

Contest CLOSED!Wow! I am quite honestly impressed! I was not expecting so many entries, especially with only a week to prepare for it! You've all done a fantastic job! It's going to be very hard to pick out the winner in this batch. 44 submissions in 7 days. That's pretty impressive everyone, and you all did a great job!Contest CLOSED!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My plan now is to spend the next couple days looking over all your entries and making up my mind. Before I leave for London I will notify the winner and make a post about it. When I get to London I'll have the posters and books prepared and shipped to the winner.
In the meantime, I suggest taking a peek at all the wonderful artwork you guys did!

Sins of an ArtistI've been under fire recently for having the audacity to admit publicly that improving my art has never been, and never was, an ultimate goal of mine. Apparently that's like committing some sort of mortal sin in the art community. I've had trouble expressing myself about it too, because brushing off improvement for improvement sake makes me look like I'm uncaring, egocentric, and stubborn. But after a recent post I was given much more clarity in understanding the issue and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.Sins of an Artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the recent exchange I was basically told this: "If doing what you love isn't about dedicating your life to improving your art, you aren't an artist."
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but making art has never been solely about the technical expertise. Even in college, outside the handful of foundation courses you take in freshman year, perfection of the craft is often secondary to concepts and ideas and your ability to evoke feelings and emotions in your audience.

Here's a sample of responses I've heard from some editors over the years when I've raised practical business concerns regarding comic book publishing:
"No, we don't know exactly what books you'll be doing, but we're (insert name of big publisher) Comics, so sign exclusive with us and not (insert name of competing publisher who has titles ready for you)!"
"This is a (insert name of big writer) book! I know he's late, but just think of how many people would love to be in your shoes!"
"The page rate isn't good, but at least you'll be getting to work with (name of big superhero whom you're supposed to be a fan of)!"
"We won't fly you out or put you into a hotel, but you should come so you can sign at the booth for us! Who doesn't love signing autographs?"
What do these statements have in common? They're emotional arguments made to sidestep yo
25 Things I learned being a Comic Artist in 2011The following list contains intense amounts of SARCASM for the purpose of satire and humor.25 Things I learned being a Comic Artist in 20113 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Never offer artistic advice or hint at the possibility that the way young and inexperienced groups of artists work might in some way be flawed.
2. Every comic must be inherently drawn better and be funnier than the last.
3. Humor is NOT relative/subjective.
4. Nothing is funny. Ever.
5. Even the most trivial aspects of your comic must be taken 100% seriously.
6. Failure to incorporate conflicting suggestions for improvement = incapable of accepting criticism.
7. Trying to quelch flame wars also inexplicably = incapable of accepting criticism.
8. Trying to explain your artistic decisions = incapable of accepting criticism.
9. Having lots of watchers = having an inflated ego.
10. Reaching the frontpage = getting Daily Deviation.
11. Every character you draw (even ones you do for commission/jobs) = your personal opinions and beliefs which you must obviously follow rigidly IRL.
12. Never change y

The Serenely Powerful Art of `yuumei
In the top half of an hourglass, a polar bear and her cub perch perilously atop a wedge of melting ice, its dripping water becoming the "sand" that is inexorably drowning an urban couch potato figure in the hourglass's bottom chamber. The beautiful yet arresting digital painting is "Countdown" by yuumei and it is currently one of the most popular pieces on deviantART. It is "archetypal yuumei" in its perfectly balanced blending of a striking lyrically beautiful visual with an underlying urgent social or political message.
Her specialty is digital art in an anime style, but she often employs traditional watercolors and other elements. Her cause is saving and preserving what's left of the Earth's wildlife and its environment; she donates large portions of profits from her artworks to a host of wildlife and environmental organizations and urges all deviants and others to do the same. But what has really been her stand-out achievem
