Writing Real, Original OCsHi. I'm Alexi. Before we get started, there's some things we need to get out of the way.Writing Real, Original OCs3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My advice is not gold. It's probably not even silver. It's not law. It's just advice. But I've been writing for years, and I've been working on this for a few days now, so It'd be pretty nice if you listened to me.
Writing believable characters starts off pretty difficult. The first characters you write will probably be shallow, and/or idealized versions of
yourself. Your first villain is probably 'just evil because he's evil'.
Your characters fall into a number of stereotypes, and become labeled by them.
Maybe you want to avoid Mary Sues so you make your characters plain.
Maybe you write extrasuperfabulous people because you want your characters to be liked.
DON'T WORRY. THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. EVERYBODY STARTS OUT LIKE THIS.
Throw this mindset out the window, because:
There is one thing that every main character needs to be.
They don't need to be
How to beat procrastination (part 1)As I said on a previous submission, I'm planning to make some tutorials on the upcoming December. Before that, however, I feel like I can help on another subject, which comes before even starting your drawing: Procrastination. I mean, procrastination towards your own drawings. How to beat procrastination (part 1)2 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
If you're not familiar with this word:
pro-cras-ti-na-tion |prəˌkrastəˈnāSHən, prō-|
"the action of delaying or postponing something."
Why am I talking about this?
Well, a year ago I used to be a professional procrastinator. I've imposed the 365 Days of Doodles challenge to myself for this particular reason.
While procrastination is to some degree a natural phenomenon and can’t be completely eradicated, you can use the following strategies to get in the habit of getting drawings done.
Mind that these are not golden rules or such, just strategies that work fo
How to beat procrastination (part 2)Most of the excuses for not drawing is lacking of ideas. On part 1 of this journal I explained why I find it useful to keep a notebook with you, and to write down your ideas whenever possible. How to beat procrastination (part 2)2 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
This second part is about developing the habit of drawing. Hope you find it useful!
Create the habit of drawing
First thing to know about creating new habits is that it works kinda like inertia law:
"An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion."
Which means that the more you postpone your drawings the more you'll feel like delaying them. This procrastination abyss can be endless. For instance, I didn't draw anything in 2013 until the end of August when I bought my fi
How to get more exposure for your art.I was recently asked for some advice on getting exposure as an artist. Here's my own advice with personal reasons as to why I suggest them. This is not a post for 'bragging', if you take it that way, then please stop reading *i mean this in the nicest way orz* This is stating facts from my experience. What worked for me and what doesn't work. It shows how my own art has gained exposure throughout the years and how yours can too. I am not a fantastic artist, I know what I'm good at and what I struggle with. I work hard for what I know I can push out and I do it proudly. I hope this post will help you earn more followers and give you a bit of inspiration as well. How to get more exposure for your art.1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Trends. There are a number of trends I'm amused by at deviantART.Trends.3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Search for draw this again and you see a meme where deviants are showing their progress through the years. Examples:
Then there's a trend on YouTube where deviants are posting video blogs about their deviantART experiences. I recently caught this one by DomieNeek that I was charmed by. She makes great points, too!
In November we published a Journal on dt's Blog, very discreetly announcing that we've launched a set of API's (Application Programming Interfaces) so that developers out there could make Apps for deviantART.

Thank you so much to everyone who entered. The variety of entries was better than I could have imagined! I was really amazed by all the creativity. I saw the bra turned into a vest. I saw the neck chain used as a signature weapon. I saw the red drapery turned into skirts and loose, baggy pants. I was amused to notice so many people leaving the boots as they were after I mentioned that I liked them. I saw Leias suited for ballroom dancing, sneaking around dark city streets, firebending, brawling, and just being awesome!

kickstarter?Hello all! I've seen more and more kickstarter projects come by lately, it seems like this method of funding is an increasingly popular thing. I really LOVE this concept, because of the opportunities it gives people who can't find funding elsewhere and the way people can participate in the creation of different kinds of projects. As someone who basically has her entire art career online and thinks sharing the things I do is absolutely crucial to my progress, I see the growth of kickstarter projects as a really positive development!kickstarter?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was thinking that this could be an option for the funding of the Trichrome series (if you have no clue what I'm talking about, check out http://trichrome.loish.net/ ) which I am going to start making in September (I already have research/outlines/scripts for the movies). I am very excited to make these but the problem has always been that I had to put the Trichrome work aside for freelance work quite often, since you know, I need to pay the rent and all! I

Using techniques... digital & trad. mediumTechniques...Using techniques... digital & trad. medium3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm wondering what kind of technique are people using while they draw traditional and digital media... for example: If they draw traditional on the same way as digital (painting, coloring, shading...)...or opposite. Because for me digital and traditional are the same. It was always annoying when teachers in school told me that digital is much easier than traditional...that in digital you just press once with the brush and you already have whole image. Hahaha... that's noooooooot true at all I spend more time drawing digital works than traditional... Then I always say to people like that...Try and see for yourself if it's easier than traditional
Well, what I want to say...and ask. Last years I drew more digital drawings than traditional, so when I started to paint canvas, I drew on the same way as if it would be digital painting...only that I had one layer If you saw my digital tutorials... at first I did basic colors, t
Free teaThank you to everybody who has sent me notes concerning my works being used & altered without permission. I'm very aware of the distress it causes to some & I tend to not over react if I find such things. If I search my images on tin-eye or Google I will find my work being used, altered & sold promoting all kinds of media without my prior permission. Years ago I would be spitting feathers and getting into all kinds of pointless internet 'war of word' battles with some quite unsavoury people - not worth the stress.Free tea2 months ago in Personal More Like This
My advice to you if you see your work being used without permission is to contact the user privately & politely ask them to remove your work, failing that there are breach of copyright forms which can be submitted legally to aid in the removal of the work.
In my experience most will remove the work if asked politely, some people aren't fully aware of copyright issues & just see a nice picture they want to use in their projects. The other ones who sell and
Know your Basics - TexturesThere are a lot of tutorials out there on how to create / photograph texture as well as how to use them on a technical level, but the question of why and when to use textures is rarely touched. Textures in Manips as you know them
For a photomanipulator, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word "texture" are images that can be used in soft light or overlay mode to texture a manipulation or parts thereof. What most manipulators therefore have in mind, are images like the following:
Beautiful textures, sure, and useful, too, but have you ever thought of doing more with them than the aforementioned overlays? And have you ever considered using other kinds of textures, too?

Collection: Easy RidersCollection: Easy Riders3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
The tragedy of owning a motorcycle is that it sometimes must be “driven” instead of “ridden.” One must occasionally “drive” one’s bike to the store for a loaf of bread or to execute some other mundane activity unworthy of being a “motorcycle rider.” One is meant to ride, not drive, a bike—as it were a contentious beast forever being tamed. A bike should not be just a vehicle for the conveyance of bodies and materials. Riding should be transformative. A rider becomes one with the natural world being riven in twain by the wake of his bike’s passing. A rider becomes a living metaphor. A rid

Sartorial Storytelling: Character at a Glance
Pulp Fiction by Rembrush
Masterful storytelling is about suspending disbelief.
One would think the most important element of a story being told is the events being depicted. Belief in these events, however, is a prerequisite to appreciation. Picture this: watching Anna Karenina in the theater, you’re riveted to the epic tale of doomed lovers. Your friend, a history professor with a fetish for details, laughs at random moments. After the movie, he pontificates at length on how unbelievable the movie was
Watercolor tips and tutorials!Hey guys. So I've been asked countless times to make a watercolor tutorial... and while I don't really have time to put that together right now (it's that crazy time of the semester) I did write out a few very basic tips regarding the nature of watercolor. I do plan on making an actual tutorial eventually as well, with pictures and more stuff about process. Perhaps this winter I can make a proper tutorial!Watercolor tips and tutorials!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
-Start with a ground wash at the beginning of painting something, with a high concentration of water. Starting with a light color base will help to unify the color scheme of the rest of the picture.
-Watercolor dries lighter than it looks when it's wet. Remember to keep this in mind. Gouache, on the other hand, dries darker. That's one of many things that makes combining gouache and watercolor tricky
-Work in layers, from light to dark. Don't expect to go straight from a white page to a dark color all at once! The darkest areas will come last.
-If you've got two areas of differ

ATB - An alternative to watermarks: MetadataWe have all seen watermarks on images, here on dA and around the internet. And even though they have become a necessary step in the aid of preventing art theft/misuse of art, they are not always ideal. It's really hard to signature or watermark an icon that is 50x50 pixels and still show it off, for example. And even in larger pieces of art, sometimes they just look ugly or, like the watermark option offered by dA, take up too much of the image.ATB - An alternative to watermarks: Metadata1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
