Writing Real, Original OCsHi. I'm Alexi. Before we get started, there's some things we need to get out of the way.Writing Real, Original OCs3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My advice is not gold. It's probably not even silver. It's not law. It's just advice. But I've been writing for years, and I've been working on this for a few days now, so It'd be pretty nice if you listened to me.
Writing believable characters starts off pretty difficult. The first characters you write will probably be shallow, and/or idealized versions of
yourself. Your first villain is probably 'just evil because he's evil'.
Your characters fall into a number of stereotypes, and become labeled by them.
Maybe you want to avoid Mary Sues so you make your characters plain.
Maybe you write extrasuperfabulous people because you want your characters to be liked.
DON'T WORRY. THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. EVERYBODY STARTS OUT LIKE THIS.
Throw this mindset out the window, because:
There is one thing that every main character needs to be.
They don't need to be
How to get more exposure for your art.I was recently asked for some advice on getting exposure as an artist. Here's my own advice with personal reasons as to why I suggest them. This is not a post for 'bragging', if you take it that way, then please stop reading *i mean this in the nicest way orz* This is stating facts from my experience. What worked for me and what doesn't work. It shows how my own art has gained exposure throughout the years and how yours can too. I am not a fantastic artist, I know what I'm good at and what I struggle with. I work hard for what I know I can push out and I do it proudly. I hope this post will help you earn more followers and give you a bit of inspiration as well. How to get more exposure for your art.1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Using techniques... digital & trad. mediumTechniques...Using techniques... digital & trad. medium3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm wondering what kind of technique are people using while they draw traditional and digital media... for example: If they draw traditional on the same way as digital (painting, coloring, shading...)...or opposite. Because for me digital and traditional are the same. It was always annoying when teachers in school told me that digital is much easier than traditional...that in digital you just press once with the brush and you already have whole image. Hahaha... that's noooooooot true at all I spend more time drawing digital works than traditional... Then I always say to people like that...Try and see for yourself if it's easier than traditional
Well, what I want to say...and ask. Last years I drew more digital drawings than traditional, so when I started to paint canvas, I drew on the same way as if it would be digital painting...only that I had one layer If you saw my digital tutorials... at first I did basic colors, t
Watercolor tips and tutorials!Hey guys. So I've been asked countless times to make a watercolor tutorial... and while I don't really have time to put that together right now (it's that crazy time of the semester) I did write out a few very basic tips regarding the nature of watercolor. I do plan on making an actual tutorial eventually as well, with pictures and more stuff about process. Perhaps this winter I can make a proper tutorial!Watercolor tips and tutorials!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
-Start with a ground wash at the beginning of painting something, with a high concentration of water. Starting with a light color base will help to unify the color scheme of the rest of the picture.
-Watercolor dries lighter than it looks when it's wet. Remember to keep this in mind. Gouache, on the other hand, dries darker. That's one of many things that makes combining gouache and watercolor tricky
-Work in layers, from light to dark. Don't expect to go straight from a white page to a dark color all at once! The darkest areas will come last.
-If you've got two areas of differ

Since the release of Sta.sh and Sta.sh Writer, there's been one feature in particular that we've been itching to release, and we're happy to announce that it's ready! Sta.sh Writer now allows for publication to multiple outlets, including your Gallery, Journal, or Group Journals.
How does it work?
1. Head to Sta.sh Writer and begin writing your entry.
2. Choose a skin for your Group from the right hand panel.
3. When you're ready to publish, choose any combination of your Journal, the Journal Portal (browseable by all deviants), and your Groups of which you are in an administrative class.
These options are perfect for those who may want to post the same message to their personal Journal and one or more of their Groups.
Keep in mind!

WINNER! Re-design slave Leia! Win earrings! This contest was extremely hard to judge, and once I'd narrowed it down to half the entries, it was almost impossible. If I hadn't added a runner-up prize level, I'd still be judging now.WINNER! Re-design slave Leia! Win earrings!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Thank you so much to everyone who entered. The variety of entries was better than I could have imagined! I was really amazed by all the creativity. I saw the bra turned into a vest. I saw the neck chain used as a signature weapon. I saw the red drapery turned into skirts and loose, baggy pants. I was amused to notice so many people leaving the boots as they were after I mentioned that I liked them. I saw Leias suited for ballroom dancing, sneaking around dark city streets, firebending, brawling, and just being awesome!

There will be 4 winners as of right now!
3 people will win 100
1 person (maybe more than one if I feel like it later!) will win a free drawing request of their choice. No restrictions, anything goes! if it breaks dA's rules, I'll post it elsewhere :iconheplz:
The only requirement is to fav this journal and you will be entered!
however, if you make a journal linking back to this one (and link me to it, of course), you will get another entry. =u=
winners will be drawn 1 week from today, on June 13th (my first day of summer vacation! ho

Then there's a trend on YouTube where deviants are posting video blogs about their deviantART experiences. I recently caught this one by DomieNeek that I was charmed by. She makes great points, too!
In November we published a Journal on dt's Blog, very discreetly announcing that we've launched a set of API's (Application Programming Interfaces) so that developers out there could make Apps for deviantART.

I have to ask the question - how dim do you have to be to fall for it?
Ok let's see - we have an image hosted on a profile that is 1 day old and asks you to visit a website with a strange url with a promise of a financial reward on an another website. How do you even imagine that would work? And now, of course, people start crying that their computers got infected with malware. Which is great - every genius who fell for this obvious phishing scam deserved it. I hope your shitty computer burns and you along with it.
I know this is a no-duh for 90% of people reading it but for the sake of the rest lets revise what we all should know about online phishig. And before you go all:
No, no you can't.

When I was a kid I wanted to be just like my father. He passed away when I was 28 but man he left a mark! By the time I was a teenager I was a lot to handle - so we hardly ever saw eye to eye. He was a tough and talented man. To me he was like a super hero. He had a very black and white philosophy about life. He defined right and wrong very distinctly - there was no grey in his world. As a kid, a philosophy like that makes complete sense even if it isn't very realistic. He was a former pro boxer turned commercial artist. Eventually he ran his own ad agency. He could play guitar and piano by ear and played baseball as often as he could. He also loved comi
ATB - An alternative to watermarks: MetadataWe have all seen watermarks on images, here on dA and around the internet. And even though they have become a necessary step in the aid of preventing art theft/misuse of art, they are not always ideal. It's really hard to signature or watermark an icon that is 50x50 pixels and still show it off, for example. And even in larger pieces of art, sometimes they just look ugly or, like the watermark option offered by dA, take up too much of the image.ATB - An alternative to watermarks: Metadata1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
So what is the alternative?
Advice and Common Cliches for Comic CreatorsAfter several years of being on this site, I've noticed several troubling trends with the comic and literature creators on here. The points brought up here are mostly comic related, but are applicable to written works as well. Contains mild profanity.Advice and Common Cliches for Comic Creators3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
For beginners, no art program or drawing tablet is automatically going to make you a better artist. Think of them as tools, rather than tickets. Like learning any skill, it takes patience, persistence and dedication through any medium. Do not be discouraged by another artist's skill or age.Don't worry about your comic's artwork unless you are actually trying to sell your work. I've seen works where the creator was obviously artistically talented, but the story was terrible. The story should come first.Do not go for extreme detail if you cannot handle it. In the worst case scenario, you'd be stressing yourself out and will never be able to finish the comic.
Don't constantly redraw older pages of your comic.

Hey, ya'll! Long time, no see!
I had a rough summer filled with health scares, but I'm finally starting to feel better, which means I can draw again! Whoo hoo! I cannot tell you how much I've missed art. Ugh, it just feels SO GOOD to be drawing again.
Hope all is well with everyone. I have tons and tons of unfinished pieces I want to start working on over the next few months, so brace yourselves for a Phantom blitz.
Also, can I just send up a hallelujah that fall is on its way? Because let me tell you, I have a hunkerin' for pumpkin-flavored everything. And sweaters and scarves and boots and cold weather and capes, yes, capes I do, in fact, own a cape which I wear the second it starts to get cold and which garners constant weird looks but I seriously don't even care because this is America and if I want to wear a cape on campus, I will, dagnabbit.
In my defense, it isn't a full on "Look-t

Topic 1: Am I on the right track to becoming a better artist?
Does your work from today, look closer to your initial goal than your work from last week? (this needs to be both in skill and idea.)
Good skills: Honing your technique, training you muscle memory, being more knowledgeable about your tools and art rules. With art rules I mean: Perspective, form, light, texture, composition.
Good ideas: Storytelling, characteristics, charm, emotion and design. Not just making things look polished but also convey something more, something that brings it to life and speaks to pe

kickstarter?Hello all! I've seen more and more kickstarter projects come by lately, it seems like this method of funding is an increasingly popular thing. I really LOVE this concept, because of the opportunities it gives people who can't find funding elsewhere and the way people can participate in the creation of different kinds of projects. As someone who basically has her entire art career online and thinks sharing the things I do is absolutely crucial to my progress, I see the growth of kickstarter projects as a really positive development!kickstarter?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I was thinking that this could be an option for the funding of the Trichrome series (if you have no clue what I'm talking about, check out http://trichrome.loish.net/ ) which I am going to start making in September (I already have research/outlines/scripts for the movies). I am very excited to make these but the problem has always been that I had to put the Trichrome work aside for freelance work quite often, since you know, I need to pay the rent and all! I
Know your Basics - TexturesThere are a lot of tutorials out there on how to create / photograph texture as well as how to use them on a technical level, but the question of why and when to use textures is rarely touched. This article wants to fill that gap and therefore looks at texures from a slightly different perspective.Know your Basics - Textures2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Textures in Manips as you know them
For a photomanipulator, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word "texture" are images that can be used in soft light or overlay mode to texture a manipulation or parts thereof. What most manipulators therefore have in mind, are images like the following:
Beautiful textures, sure, and useful, too, but have you ever thought of doing more with them than the aforementioned overlays? And have you ever considered using other kinds of textures, too?
