Started this very late (yesterday) mainly because of my inability to sleep. Wasn't going to enter this contest at first. So, it definitely looks sloppy.
I chose and modified Character 4 from the Resource Package. Ended up being this slightly creepy bird/ice princess outfit. Not sure if I like the outfit or not. One thing I like about my lack of commitment to a style is that I can try lots of different styles. I haven't drawn a picture with lineart in such a long time, and also haven't drawn a very manga-ish picture in a long time too, so it was nice practicing the stylized anatomy.
She's casting an ice spell (sorceresses can cast lightning, fire and ice spells according to the Fantasy Zero website).
Overall, fun picture to do. Even the lineart was relaxing to draw, and I think it turned out better than my usual fail attempts at lineart. Not expecting any results from this contest. Critique always welcome, I just won't be able to make corrections since this is a contest entry.

The knights of the Order of the Black Tortoise specialize in maximum defense, while still optimizing offensive strength. Inspired by the legendary beast of the eastern nations, the Black Tortoise, these warriors are masters of using the Carapace Lance -- a weapon that is balanced between offense and defense.
The Carapace Lance is primarily a thrusting weapon, with customizable "heads" -- the tip of the weapon. These heads range from the typical pointed lance head, to more specialized variants like a drill head and a snapper head. The sheer weight of the weapon also makes it ideal for crushing lightly armored foes.
The defining feature of the Carapace Lance is the ability of its outer platings to expand into a sheild-like contraption, the "carapace". When deployed, the carapace can effectively protect the vital parts of its weilder from scout-fire. The plates of the carapace are normally crafted from iron, but high ranking knights are commonly issued with lances with plates made of terratanium, a valuable impervious material. None but the strongest magic can pierce this defense. It is this defensive aspect of a Black Tortoise Knight that makes them ideal team members, especially in escort missions, and protecting valuable sorcerers during battle.
The Carapace Lance itself is heavy to carry into battle, and so the Black Tortoise Knights are not typically fitted with full armor. Rather, royal engineers and alchemists have devised gigantic armlets that not only protect its wearer, but also aid in lifting and weilding the gigantic Carapace Lance.
Oh my what to say what to say... A bit of advice: If you are unsure as to whether to enter a contest, don't leave it till about 3 days before the deadline to decide. Especially if you are fully aware just how SLOW you work...
So I figured I'd enter a contest, my first proper DA contest I think ever... The brief was to work with the existing character classes from Fantasy Earth Zero and reinterpret them, redesign, just... generally put our own spin on it all Unfortunately, I didn't have as much time as I would have liked (see above...) and so didn't finish what I'd wanted to. Originally there'd been two characters, which in fact was the whole point of the image. I'd figured that there would be some sort of mental strain on mages or wizards or whatever kooky magician types you kids are playing with these days, so I would divide the character into, to supposedly 'share the mental strain'. Of course, I didn't have time to do the second character soooo... the whole thing has kinda lost it's point...
I don't see myself doing particularly well here, but still it was fun as ever learning as I go, improving hopefully too. The image is a little more anime than I'd normally do but thats kinda part and parcel with the competition. I went for the more banners, more tails, bigger staff, more impractical approach, you see.
Anyways, I will probably come back to this at some point and finish the second character, but until then, see you kids later!
