Facebook is bad for artists?I had some interesting findings after posted a poll on DA regarding my Facebook Fan Page. Many have commented that they are against Facebook and discourage me from posting art over there due to various reasons, and one of them due to the possibility of having my art being used freely by this social media site. So here are my thoughts based on my experience running a FB page for a year.Facebook is bad for artists?11 months ago in Personal More Like This
The main reason for me to set up a facebook page, is to extend my fanbase beyond DA, to the not so artist-oriented demographics. I have been using DA, and only DA, as my art HQ for the past decade and will always be. Facebook is acting as an outpost to connect with my fans in a more responsive manner due to the convenience of making posts, replies, making announcements and sharing images. Honestly, it is not my intention to choose between DA and FB, but to use both concurrently for different purposes.
So far I have not encountered any incident of FB using my images for advertising or any other comm
Creative Commons-Attribution Share Alike 3.0 LicenSo, someone sent me a note asking me (and warning me) about my works being licensed as Creative Commons and how that was going to bring down fire and brimstone on the artistic community.Creative Commons-Attribution Share Alike 3.0 Licen3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've already responded privately, but I thought I'd share my views with you here. Not least because I am a fervent believer in Copyleft, Creative Commons, and of course Copyright.
Thanks for your note warning me about the dangers of Creative Commons. I'm afraid though I'm going to have to disagree with you and your views on this subject. Aside from my graphic artistic creations, I'm also a published author of two science-fiction novels.
For the last 10+ years, each of my creations has been licensed under a Creative Commons like license (GNU Free Document License, CC-BY-NC) or flat out released to the public domain.
The only time a piece of my creation has NOT been released under a Copyleft license has been when it's been a work for hire which all copyrights were transferred upon delivery
Creative Commons on DeviantArt - ExplainedI'd like to give everyone a little bit of information about the Creative Commons options on DeviantArt. Seeing as we are a Creative Commons group, it's very important for everyone here to understand how these licenses work.Creative Commons on DeviantArt - Explained5 years ago in Personal More Like This
Most people just click the little radio button that says "use a creative commons license" and have done with it, but DeviantArt allows as little sharing as possible and is the very opposite of the intent of Creative Commons. If you leave the default settings on then your work will be very limited and not available in the free culture community. Since here, picking the right license is important, we encourage you to think about what you want to allow and change some of the default options.
The general gist of how the deviantArt creative commons buttons work in relation to your art is this:
- "Use a creative commons license" allows people to copy your work and share it, perhaps online or with their friends offline. With only this option submitted, your work may

Budget Art Tablet ReviewsThis is review is of older model alt tablets - but still search engines. I am leaving it because Huion P608n models are still floating around and are a good deal - also added some linux info - why? Many reasons. I am a Linux enthusiast. Linux is the Un-cola (for those who have seen retro advertisements - 7up used to advertise itself as the Un-cola) of the soda pop world of Operating systems. Windows being Coke, and Apple being Pepsi. The P608n has been replaced by the 680s. The 680s has the same specs but I read at another source stating they have improved certain aspects. The HA60 sold by Monoprice and other resellers was extremely successful. A competitor of Huion - Ugee has decided to keep selling this model but with a full 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity. Other reviewers have been busy testing newer higher end models. Ray Frenden is one such person (google). The flood gate has opened since I first posted this. DD Suggestion GuidelinesUPDATE > I am no longer accepting DD suggestions, please send them to current CV's > :faq18:DD Suggestion Guidelines2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As one of the current CV's assigned for Traditional Art Galleries, I am taking Daily Deviation suggestions - I can only feature artworks within Traditional Art categories.
How to suggest
- Send me a note with "DD suggestion" as a subject
- In the note, include a thumbnail of the work you are suggesting
- I encourage you to write a brief description of why you think this piece should be featured, but it's not obligatory
- If you wish to remain anonymous as a suggester, please let me know ahead of time
Personal process of going through my suggestions
- Before suggesting, make sure the artist hasn't already received a Daily Deviation within the past 6 months.
- You don't need to suggest more than one piece, I will always look at the entire
A way to search for Creative Commons art in DAA simple way to search for creative commons art in DA, is to use Google advance search.A way to search for Creative Commons art in DA3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Put it in you google.com search:
"This work is licensed under a Creative Commons" site:deviantart.com
Click the word "Images" in the left of the google page. It will show images instead of pages.
Voila. You'll see all images under CC in DA.
If you want to be more specific in your search, you can add words in the search above.
It doesn't compares with an in-site feature, but at least it is a workaround...

Tutorials!Tutorials!7 years ago in Personal More Like This
Over the years I have produced a range of tutorials on artistic use of the computer. Most of them concerns rather general concepts and can hopefully give something regardless of which program you are using or even be of some interest for traditional, non-digital artists. Some examples of my art can be found in the gallery.
That said, to get the most out of these you should know that I mainly use the open-source image manipulation program GIMP. I also work a lot with the painter program MyPaint. These are both very powerful programs capable of great artistic expression. Being open-source programs, they are both legally free to download and use without any cost. They exist for many platforms, including Linux, Mac and Windows, so they are worth trying out if you haven't already.
The tutorials listed below tend are (ver

Apparel Collection: Sunset BurnerThe celebration of letterforms is a timeless and globally universal art form. When pushed towards the abstract, the individual letters become more about the overall shape than the words they form or meaning. The graphic becomes about the marriage between the whole design and composition and the letterforms seemingly hidden in plain sight.Apparel Collection: Sunset Burner2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Contemporary graffiti is often done in this style. As you may know, artistic graffiti is powerful global art movement where artists choose more non-traditional ways to execute pieces and more publicly accessible places to display their artwork.
This specific piece is done in a linear Wildstyle fashion and symbolizes the wearer’s proclivity for pushing the boundaries of abstraction and taking risks with their work. In this garment, you can feel free to take your style, put it in a blender, and mix it up with your inspirations, influences, surroundings, and emotions. Pour this concoction into a cup and paint with it, do the unexpected

"To escape criticism - do nothing, say nothing, be nothing."
Everyone wants to be praised for their work. It's the extremely rare individual who creates things and doesn't care how they're received. Dealing with criticism can be painful, but at the same time enormously helpful.
Let's begin with understanding the function that positive and negative feedback serve. Positive feedback (pointing out things you did WELL) increases commitment to the work you do, by enhancing your experience and your confidence, white Negative feedback (pointing out things you did WRONG), on the other hand, is informative - it tells you where you need to spend your effort, and offers insight into how you might improve.
With that being said, positive and negative feedback are affective and motivate differently, their impact varies from different peop
Neat little Windows 8/10 trickHi everyone,Neat little Windows 8/10 trick5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Just thought I share a little trick I came across on Windows 8 and Windows 10 when it comes to the Start Screen/Menu. Many people are probably aware that you can apply custom tiles to the Start Screen via tools such as OblyTile or Pin More. However, the problem with this is that it leaves some inconsistency between the start screen icon and the desktop icon of the app. At the same time, modifying your system is something that some people don't want to do. So here's a simple trick for making metro/modern style tiles without any system modification or the need to install an app. Here's is the result of this:
How is this possible? All it takes is a white 48x48 ico with a color outlining it:
Windows will automatically take the outline color and apply it to the tile. The downside to this is that there is only a handful of colors you can choose from and for some it may be harder to apply than OblyTile.
If people are interested, I am thinking about making an icon set specifically

From the clothesline strung across the backyard, to the college dorm laundry rooms, to the inner city all-night Laundromats, we all have our memories that begin with helping Mom with Laundry Day, that task that soon became ours alone upon taking flight from the family nest. Laundry day can evoke warm memories of family unity, or cold memories of aching separation and loneliness, the softness of a stack of fresh towels or the hardness of city sidewalks, depending on the time in you life you are remembering. Here is a collection of deviations evoking the full range of Laundry Day duality.

It's not just the artwork that tells you something about it's creator - on the internet, the way you present it is at least equally as important. Your painting can be a masterpiece, hanged in a local gallery, but as long as you post a blurry, badly cropped picture named "1564873" along with "..." in an artist's description, nobody will ever bother visiting your gallery. Creating a nice, representative profile page and setting a certain visual quality standard takes extra time and effort, but if you really care for your work (even if it's just a hobby), you should treat it with some respect.
I've already written a related article called The power of context that tried to explain how to place your work in a context in order to better connect with your audience, this one is focused
