9: Allies and Enemies Ch 8A few minutes after 11 left and 17 was revived, 13 sat 10 down to talk outside alone.
"What on earth were you doing out in the middle of the night?" she said.
10's face grew dark and serious, "16 told me 17 was in danger out in the field. When I finally saw her, she said 16 told her I was in danger."
"Maybe 16 saw the beast coming and just got confused?" she suggested.
10's brows lowered with his voice, "I think she meant to kill us."
13 leaned back, "don't be ridiculous! 16's not like that."
"Don't you see?" he stood up. "This was all planned. Why else would 16 send us out there? Why didn't she call 12? He's the strongest."
"Now you're just being paranoid," 13 replied with a bit of anger in her voice. "What reason would 11 have to kill you?"
"Because I suspected his plan. 6 and 17 see it too, that's why we were the only ones out there."
13 shook her head, "You used to be so loyal to out platoon. Now, I'm not so sure."
Without another word, 13 walked away.
10 reached and called to her,

Everyone stood petrified. All that was heard was the sound of the river below. The rain had let up, but dark clouds still engulfed the skies.
13 fell to her knees, the ground below her splashed from the soft mud.
"No," she sobbed. She buried her hands in her face and hunched over. 10 came over to comfort her, stoking her back. "They're gone. They're gone," she sobbed. 10 held her against his chest and stroked her head.
A noise was heard from the canyon.
"It's as though I can still here her," 13 said.
The same noise was heard again.
"I can hear her, too," said 10, looking around.
The noise was joined by another noise and grew louder.
"Heeeey!" the noise said. "We're down here!"
7 leaned over the canyon and laughed aloud.
Everyone else made their way to the canyon to peer over the edge. Hanging from the edge was 17, who held her spear with one hand and 6 in the other. At the last moment, 17 jabbed the spear into the side of the canyon before 11 lost his grip and plummeted down into the r

A shadow loomed over him in the leaf-bare tree. The shadow jumped out of the tree, revealing himself as 8, and landed on 11. 11 yelped in surprise and thrashed about, but 8 clung to him. He was about to reach his front claw to grab 8 when something metal met the front claws with a clang! 7 thrust 17's spear at the half beast, half ragdoll. He growled at 7 and was about to thrust at her when 8 grabbed his head and yanked on it, causing him and the suit to fall back.
With 11 distracted, 17 came out of hiding and latched on to 11. With her metal claws, she got a good grip on one of the two talismans latched on to the suit, even with 11 bucking like a bronco. She groaned as she tugged at

"Remember that time you accidentally spilled the professor's formula and it burned a hole through the table?" 1 chuckled.
11 placed a hand on his forehead and laughed. "Oh yes. I was such a klutz."
"We were young. What did we know? Speaking of which, whatever happened to 10?"
The smile melted off 11's face. "He died."
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry. What happened?"
"He was just a prototype. He didn't stand a chance in the war. But you have to admit, he was a silly idealist. He always had the silliest fantasies about a peaceful world."
1 chuckled. "Oh yes. Sounds just like our 9."
They both let out a sigh at the same time and leaned back. They were silent for a few seconds.
"It feels so good to laugh again," said 1 "I haven't felt this good since before all the humans were wiped out."

They heard quiet talking inside the barn. They pressed up their hearing receptors against the wall to hear it.
"Guys, is that you?" 17 whispered.
From inside the barn, 9 answered.
"Yeah, it's us. Is that you, 17? Is 6 with you?" he asked.
"What's going on in there?"
"11 came back, but he's gone mad!" said 1. "He's wearing some sort of suit with many legs. If he finds you, he'll capture you with us. We're trapped in this stall and we can't get out."
17 looked at 6, and then she leaned her spear against the barn wall and felt around boards.
"Hold on, I'm going to get you out of here."
When she found the loose board, she lifted it up and poked her head in.
"Quickly, this way."
She got out of the way to allow everyone through.

"There are more of you?" 9 asked.
13 nodded. "18 of us, in fact. 10 and the mechanics went missing. We camp in an old barn, over by that windmill over there."
9 looked over to where she was pointing. The windmill was about half a day's journey away.
"Must be nice," he said. "Our sanctuary was destroyed by flying mechanical beasts. 1's still grumpy about it."
13 laughed. "Your 1 sounds just like our 11. He's our leader."
Suddenly, 17 yelped and hid behind 13.
"What's wrong?" 13 asked.
"We're being watched," 17 whispered.
Two light blue ragdolls hid behind 9. Their eyes clicked and lit up like a camera shutter.
"That's just 3 and 4," said 9. "They don't want to hurt you, they just want to catalog you."

A small burlap creature sat on a matchbook and stared at the wasteland before him, the number 9 inscribed in ink on his back. He sat with his legs spread apart and his hands hung from his inner thighs. Rain clouds were clearing from the sky. He sighed as he watched them drift away.
"Watching the rain again?" a female voice spoke.
The burlap rag doll turned around and saw another creature similar to himself. She lifted up the beak of the bird skull she wore as a helmet, exposing her face.
"Oh, 7. How long were you there?"
"Not very," she sat down next to him. "What were you thinking of just now?"
"Same as always. Where do we go from here, what happens now, all that."
"Like you said, this world is ours now."
"I'm just feeling a bit " he held out his wooden and copper hands, as though reaching for the words, "incapable, I guess." He dropped his hands and looked at 7. "Can we really begin a new world with just the nine of us?"

"Of course," she said.

13 tilted her head.
10 took a deep breath and stopped scrubbing, "I've been thinking 14 and 15 wouldn't just start using the bodies of our brothers, unless if they were receiving orders." He looked at the ground. "I think 11's the culprit."
13 jerked back and stopped scrubbing as well, "How can you say such a thing? 11 may be strict, but that's no reason to betray him like that."
"You've disobeyed him. Many times," he said, cocking an eyebrow.
"Yeah, but I would never betray him like that. He's kept us safe from the cat beast."

The beast hissed at 10 as it drew closer. A rock hit its head and it turned around.

The beast lunged its needles at 17. She fended them off with her spear.

"You know too much already," 14 said as she tried to push. "You must run. Now!"
A low growling drifted through the house. They all turned and looked into the furthest recesses of the hallway. In the darkness, two red lights shined through. The lights came closer. A figure appeared against the dark light and towered over them, easily three times larger than any of them. There, a creature made of burlap stood. His stitched torso and arms dwarfed his small waist and legs. His long arms dragged along the ground. For teeth, rows of razor blades stuck out every which way, making it impossible to close his mouth. He wore a belt with a buckle with the number 18 engraved.
"Run! Get out, now!" 14 shoved her brethren out the door.
They ran screaming out the front door. The beast ran after them. 15 managed to dodge, but 14 found herself being slapped by the beast's claws and was thrown against the wall.

*You're on,* 4 smirked.
13 glared at the two scholars then looked up.
"Come down here before you hurt yourself!" 13 demanded.
"I know what I'm doing," 17 said. She readjusted pack on her back, the only thing attaching her to the wings made of black cloth and metal rods.
She would not admit it aloud, but she was scared to death. And yet she knew she couldn't back down, not after all the hard work she and the mechanics put into making these wings. She adjusted the straps of the pack on her back that held the wings, designed with metal rods and fabric for the flaps. The design was similar to a moth, a creature she saw in a book. Using 2 and 5's skills, with some help from 14 and 15, they turned 17's designs into a rea
9: Learn to Fly EpilogueTo say things went back to normal wouldn't be quite accurate. It was true that the mechanics went back to building, 8 and 12 continued to test each other's strength, 1, 9, and 10 continued to lead (though 1 decided to retire several years later). But with the introduction of flight, many of the stitchpunks used that to their advantage and went off to explore new lands, meeting new friends, and discovering more about life. Even so, they always returned home to tell of their adventures.9: Learn to Fly Epilogue4 years ago in Sci-Fi More Like This
And it was all thanks to 17. If it wasn't for her harebrained idea to build a set of wings, they might have never made their new discoveries, or worse, never beaten the Walkers.
She was their encouragement.
Despite 17's newfound ability and admiration from her elders, her favorite thing to do was still drawing in the studio with 6.
Her spear and wings were set by the door. The sky began to turn a deep shade of purple, but 17 didn't need to run home. 13 finally allowed her to stay out late. That one rule c

14 and 15 volunteered to stay home and build more sets of wings. Apparently, after 17's demonstration, several of the other stitchpunks were asking for their own pairs, which had been keeping the twin mechanics busy for days.
2 and 5 decided it would be best to test the wings out themselves so they could easily decide what adjustments to make. 7 and 17 just wanted to go exploring.
It didn't take them long to reach the outskirts of the city and land just outside the forest. 5 stumbled a bit as he landed on the soft dirt below before regaining himself and joining his comrades as they entered into the forest.
"That was smashing!" 2 chuckled. "Flying here only took us, what? Fifteen, thirty minutes? It would have taken us half a day to walk here." He patted 17 on the shoulder. "I don't know where you get your ideas, but I'm glad you came up with

"Panicking isn't going to solve anything," her mate, 10, said soothingly. "We should organize a search party."
1, 9, and 13 nodded in agreement. Only 7 sat with her arms crossed.
"I for one believe 6," she said as-a-matter-of-factly. "If he says she's going to return, then who are we to doubt her? He's always been right before."
"But when?" 13 growled. "He never said when she'd be back."
"I'm sure it'll be soon," said 7, though her voice was tinted with doubt.
"This is all your fault," 13 balled her fists. "If only you hadn't filled her head with those stories about you adventures in the Emptiness, she would not be out there right now."
The white warrior's eyebrows furrowed in anger. "I left because I was feeling trapped in my own home. I felt smothered by my 'family.'"

She doubted she'd be able to handle being able to fly through a thunderstorm. Better head back.
She made a clumsy U-turn in midair, but was quick to right herself.
This was such a stupid idea, anyway. She shook her head at herself. What did she plan to accomplish by mindlessly wandering around the area?
The storm seemed to gather towards her home. Would she be able to make it before the storm hit?
She weaved through the crumbling skyscrapers with ease.
It wasn't like her to disobey her elders like this. If 13 found out, she'd be furious. Maybe she'd be able to get back before anyone noticed.

"What's my function?" 17 blurted.
All optics were on 17.

It was a question she had thought about for a while now. It seemed to her that everyone was built for a purpose, but what about her?

Everything was chaos, machines and humans fighting each other endlessly, bodies dying and machines destroying homes, killing without mercy. A small group of tiny ragdolls walked under a war helmet, guided by a white clothed doll. Not too far from them another doll ran away from the chaos, her ribbon ponytail moving around as her body was covered by a blue cloth, completely frightened.
Under the dirty helmet the dolls were running trying to ignore all the destruction. One of them groaned, having lost his eye. A shoe-laced doll and the other female in the group had to carry the one named 5. "Are you sure you didn't see anyone else out there?" the female numbered 0 asked their so called leader, the first created.

"When will that be?" 14 asked, shifting in her seat among the rest of her nervous clan.
"Tonight. Before sunset. We need to reach them before dark."
"Then we should leave now," said 1.
"Agreed," 9 said to the eldest stitchpunk. "Thankfully, 5 and I have come up with a plan." 9 opened up the floor and allowed his friend to put up the attack plan for everyone to see.
"Okay," 5 let out a quiet breath. "Here's what we need to do "

As 17 flew over the tree tops, the three Walkers appeared before her, silhouetted between the crumbling buildings and the remains of the night sky. Their metal had been rusted over, giving their once silver shimmer a now dull shade of brown. She wondered how Walkers could still be functioning. Could it be that they had just never turned off? They were, after all, machines. Without anyone to turn them off or stop them, they would just keep on going until every last gear rusted over and they collapsed.
17 flapped as hard as she could. There was no way a bunch of mindless robots were going to destroy everything they had fought for. This was her home, and she would fight to protect it.

I got together with my colleague Gene Acker today in a little café just between our two towns. I worked under him through the B.R.A.I.N. project as a sort of assistant, but I had to stop when my daughter got sick. She's doing better now, but I fear her fever will come back, especially since the air is becoming increasingly filthier each day because of these machines.
Strange that he called me to this outing, especially when he was gone in hiding for so long.
Talking to him was a bit disturbing. The way he talked about his accomplishments makes him sound like one of the Rebels, even calling the B.R.A.I.N. project a mistake. I felt a bit taken aback. To side with the Rebels is to go against the Chancellor, and I will take no part in that, especially considering how much our beloved Chancellor has done for us.
He told me about the talisman and what he plans to do with it. He says the world is ending, but we must find a way to continue living.

"What's the occasion?" 9 asked when he arrived.
"Didn't you hear?" said 5. "10's going to propose to 13, and he wants it to be a special occasion. Just don't tell her, okay? It's going to be a surprise."

At first, 6 danced with the twins 3 and 4, playing games with them. But after about ten minutes, 6 started to worry. 17 was still not there.
