The Evolution of CultureCulture EvolutionThe Evolution of Culture2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The evolution of culture flows through a number of different dynamics. I want to look into each one of these dynamics as they behave individually and interact with each other to generate large-scale cultural evolution. The primary activity of every human being is the formation of "meaning architectures". A meaning architecture is a system for predicting and controlling ones circumstance to achieve a satisfactory condition. The content of "satisfactory condition" and the strategies for prediction and control are highly variable and their movement is both one of the primary consequences of and drivers of cultural evolution. This is because our actions are all always determined by our "meaning architectures" (in combination with our capabilities and actual circumstances).
I. The bio/developmental individual
Every meaning architecture starts on our specific and general biological inheritance.
THE ESSENCE OF THE GNOSTICSGreetings my friends,THE ESSENCE OF THE GNOSTICS1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Tonight begins a three part series on Gnosticism and just who and what the Gnostics are. Tonight I want to talk about the cosmology of the Gnostics, and how that has evolved into the modern day Gnostic worshipers. Next Sunday I will talk more about the three men who set forth the laws and rules that govern Gnostic sects all over the world (Mani, Marcion, and Valentinus.) In week three I will discuss the Nag Hamadi library, and how it has forged a rebirth of Gnostic thinking. Finally, in week four, I will discuss modern day Gnosticism and how worshipers apply it to their everyday lives.
Let me start off by letting you know that I am Gnostic by faith, and have been so for almost 30 years. I meet with a handful of friends who are fellow Gnostics, and we discuss our faith, what we have learned from it, and share ideas for reaching the ultimate goal of finding Gnosis. Though there are some Gnostic churches across the globe, congregational worship is not desirabl

All art, no payI just had a discussion with an aspiring writer and manga artist at the convention last week. He told me he has good ideas for a story he's writing, but as he's terrible at drawing, he needed a manga artists to draw the actual manga for him. As he seemed to be pretty serious about it, he tried already to make contact with several artists. But as he doesn't earn money (because... hey... there's no manga yet) he didn't actually pay an artist for the work. As a result, most of the artist gave up after a few pages. Either that, or the art quality was (in his eyes) not good enough. All art, no pay1 year ago in Personal More Like This
As a teacher for the mangaschool organisation, I see a lot of this kind of people. More than I'd like to, actually. This guy was a case book example of the young, aspiring, wannabe manga writer that doesn't understand that you have to invest in something, before you can actually get something from it. Especially when it comes to art.
He kept on ranting about how people didn't draw stuff for them, or how the

Art Instruction Books that I've Found HelpfulHey folks,Art Instruction Books that I've Found Helpful1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So last week I wrote about irrational confidence and how it helps artistsand you all seemed to enjoy it. One of the things that really stood out to me was how many of you went out and bought "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators" by Mike Mattesi.
As a person that spends a lot of time trying to get better at drawing, I have read a billion and a half art instruction books. Not all of them are good, and some of them I feel even steer you in the wrong direction. So I'd like to try and distill the information that I've accumulated over the years for you here—which books actually worked for me. I'll provide links as well. What a swell guy, huh?

How to price your artwork for freelance workFor a while now I have been giving pricing suggestions to artists in the projects forum. I've had many requests and given a lot of advice. It is getting to the point where there is so much demand that I just can't keep up on the reviews, so I thought I might lessen the burden a little and help you learn how to price your own artwork. How to price your artwork for freelance work3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The problem with pricing your own work is that your opinion is not objective. You may think that your art is better or worse than it actually is. This is normal, but to get the best evaluation of your art you should ask for help outside your immediate family and friends. Remember, the project forum is intended for this very purpose. After following all the steps outlined in this article I implore you to make a thread in the project forum asking if your pricing assessment is accurate. For example "Is my art worth $XX USD?" would be an appropriate title for your thread and would hel
Something about dedication in drawing improvementUPDATED: 2013/11/02 Added 1 personal suggestion at the bottom...Something about dedication in drawing improvement11 months ago in Personal More Like This
Couple of days ago I came across a series of notes & quotes made my various Japanese artists on how to improve drawing. This was not really an article per say but more of cut & paste collection from different source, so the artists had very different background varying from manga-ka, animators & illustrators (including general illustration). While some of them did have specific approach in development, majority of them had 1 thing in common. Which is to weight the practice in quantity, in other word "draw as much as you can".
To me this was rather obvious cause I some what went through this practice earlier in my as I became so called "Artist". (Well that's what people call me and not what I personally feel...) Although the difference is that initially I didn't do it because I wanted to improvement but I just picked up pencil because I like drawing. But in any case their was couple of

Three Common Stereotypes in One Piece OCs:iconLadyMischievous:: This is a 'test rant' from a journal project that I have been working on for a bit. If I start posting some of these rants here, it'd be more of a once in a while kind of thing. These rants are based off of my experiences and viewpoints while I've been in fandoms.Three Common Stereotypes in One Piece OCs2 years ago in Personal More Like This
From the Journal of "Miss Rant" Entry 1: Three Common Stereotypes in One Piece OCs
During my time observing the OP OC fandom I've noticed that in the OC part of the fandom people have a tendency in following common stereotypes or themes. Three of these stereotypes that I have seen the most of are what I call 'the pure maiden', 'Strong Silent Type', and 'the crazy bitch'. These three stereotypes can actually take quite a few forms, but what I am bringing to you today is the overall general idea of each. Whenever you have time, take a look around and see just how many you can spot. You may be surprised, even your own OCs might end up under one of these categories.

You now have the option to include/exclude your journal from the Journal Portal, and from your Journal Tab's new "Featured" section.
The Journal Portal in the footer of deviantART now pulls from the Journals category but excludes all "Personal" posts. This means, you must categorize your Journal on submission for it to even qualify to appear in the footer of dA. This has substantially increased the quality of posts that appear there.
