Hunger Games Control Room Concept Design by `RahllRemember the control room scenes of The Hunger Games? Did you know the concept work for that control room and the 3D displays was done by our very own Reid Southen (Rahll)?Hunger Games Control Room Concept Design by `Rahll3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Reid is a senior member on deviantART who has been on the site for six years. Reid is also doing concept work for Jupiter Ascending, an upcoming 2014 sci-fi film.
He had posted a journal about his work on the Hunger Games back in February, but wasn't able to upload his work right away. He posted this deviation to his deviantART gallery yesterday:
"I had the pleasure of doing a lot of design work on the control room in the movie, from the interfaces to the holograms and such. Hybride in Montreal did a great job bringing it all to life, and it was fun seeing their tests and the f

A Brief Discussion About Tonal ContrastTraditional Art WeekA Brief Discussion About Tonal Contrast3 months ago in Art Features More Like This
In last Traditional Week, we talked about the elements which if you ignore can destroy your painting and all your hardwork.
What Ruins A Painting?
Contrast and Values were one main element that either can make your works fruitful or ruin it. It needs to be discussed more broadly as a lot of new artists have trouble to establish a good tonal contrast. Result? Despite their brilliant artistic skills, the picture does not pop up! It looks dull, muted. That is not the fault of the drawing or skills, it's the lack of observation and understanding lights.
Contrast is the difference between two values which helps you to dis

In 2008, I started working for my father's company in the oil business as an IT Assistant while going to college. I never intended to make a career out of working for my father. However, a year after I started working there the company was in desperate need of a new website and complete revamping of our branding. My father was well aware of my hobby with digital art and experience coding so he asked me if I would take on the website and re-branding inbetween working on IT jobs and I agreed. A few weeks later, I presented my ideas for the site and branding, which he approved and I immediately began working on the implementation of both.
Once everything went live I received a promotion that essentially put me in charge of all future advertising for the company. Basically, everything from email signatures, business cards, brochures, to animated presentations are designed and/or reviewed by me before they are seen by clients. Currently, I am
PE: Literature Basics SettingsLiterature Basics WeekPE: Literature Basics Settings9 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
Along with characters and plot, setting is one of the most important choices we make when we write. In the most basic terms, setting is where your literary work takes place. It's up to you, as the author, to use it and mold it to fit the needs of your writing, make it more than just a backdrop to your prose or poetry.
A good setting becomes like a character itself. It can be express moods, offer comfort or hindrance. The setting can even be the main antagonist - consider the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's The Shining, or the island in the 2000 Tom Hanks' film, Cast Away. In both of these examples, the protagonist(s) have to survive their surroundings, one mundane, the other ... less so.
Make Your Setting Work For You
Everything in your written work must be chosen for maximum effect. When deciding on your setting, decide what you want to accomplish with it. Here are some possibilities.

Collection: MushroomsCollection: Mushrooms6 months ago in Art Features More Like This
No other plant looks, feels or tastes like a mushroom. They can bloom after a rainstorm and fill up a meadow in the woods that was empty the day before. They are a delight in the eye of the epicurean, but though tiny and fragile, strike terror in the hearts of non–woodsmen like me. Identified properly, they are a marvelous salad. Misidentified, they can mean sudden death. Such tiny, pretty forest dwellers, but with power over even a starving man. Such is a mushroom.
“I am… a mushroom; On whom the dew of heaven drops now and then.”

Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!Years and years ago, at the beginning of my illustration career, a veteran illustrator got mad at me, and at a number of my colleagues, for charging too little. We all protested loudly. "But, dude," we said, "we are not veterans like you, with years of experience and stunning portfolios to back us up. We are newbies, and we need to eat, too, so we'll take what we can get. We're not in direct competition with you, so why do you care?" Then, we added, with great smugness, "Oh, and our rates are the current industry standard, so pthbbbbbt!"Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Except more than a decade's gone by, and I see that my colleagues and I are now veterans, with our own pretty portfolios and lengthy CVs. We have become the indignant illustrator's direct competitors, and we're not earning that much more than we were at the start of our careers. We're certainly not getting what he did, at the height of his. And we did this to ourselves. Oh, sure, we're not solely re

A Valentine Birthday Wish from +SpyedAll of my birthdays have always been about stuff. Stuff I don't want, stuff I definitely don't need. This year for my birthday on Valentines Day I want to focus the love I have from my friends and family to build a WELL in a developing country. They cost $5000. And for the next 20 years this well will provide fresh drinking water to a village.A Valentine Birthday Wish from +Spyed3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In Angelo's words...
All of my birthdays have always been about stuff. Stuff I don't want, stuff I definitely don't need.
I'm surrounded by very giving people, and I'm always honored by how gracious my friends are, but when a guy gets to a
certain age, you kinda just buy the video games and books and music right when you want them, you know?
This year, I decided to do something a little different for my birthday. I was introduced recently to a charity
called charity: water, and I love this organization. The people behind

Welp, my journey on this site started out WAAAY back when in 08' (which feels like so long ago and yet so little at the same time a;lksdfmsd)
I started out with an account that had no numbers or piranhas in its name to speak of, and only a tiny number of deviations to its name. (I never deactivated it either, if anyone wants to poke at the barren wasteland that it is for posterity xD :iconarogence
On that account I would run into many artists that would be HUGE inspirations to me, and some of them I've formed friendships I never would've imagined having :,D The work that they did back then (and still do now) has played a big part of influencing where I'm at today with what I want to do as an artist, and really in my life in general.
If not for deviantart I would've never met one of my closest friend's imaginable, :iconMischiefLily:, we've been through a TON of stuff over the years, and she means the absolute world to me. Both o

"Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."—Prof. Albus Dumbledore
Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian times in which map
