Art in Contemplation of Its Own BecomingDuchamp finds a discarded urinal. He alters it (by signing a name to it not even his own, but obviously “the artist’s”) and names it “The Fountain”. The most mundane, even off-putting, of objects is transformed by Duchamp into art. He submits it for exhibition and it is rejected. You might say the judges “pissed on” his idea. But the idea was born and persisted. Duchamp insisted the object was art because he as an artist presented it as such. “Conceptual Art” was born.Art in Contemplation of Its Own Becoming4 years ago in Personal More Like This

I have always loved anthologies. Growing up in Britain 95 percent of the comics were weekly anthologies so it has been firmly ingrained in my psyche.
I've always felt that anthologies are a good platform for experimentation, trying new ideas and styles, introducing new talent and especially good to read in the bathroom. I'll never forget the impression Heavy Metal had on me when I first saw it.
They're perfect for those moments when you've read through the 100 comics you've bought that month and realized there wasn't a single complete story in the pile.
I've recently relaunched two previously successful anthologies, A1 and MONSTER MASSACRE.

A New Way to Make SuggestionsHello Beta Testers!A New Way to Make Suggestions2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
For some time we've been running a limited test of the Ideas Forum on our Zendesk Help Desk integration. Today, we're expanding this test to our Beta Testers.
This forum allows for a great deal of flexibility in how we approach suggestions.
We can mark items that are planned, completed, or not planned at this time. We can also highlight staff responses on forums, giving more weight to responses that are important in informing deviants why we can, or cannot, take a suggestion into consideration at this time.
Deviants can vote on one anothers' posts, giving greater community control over what content is reviewed. The more votes, the higher the suggestion will appear in the forum! Unlike our current forum, threads don't expire, and when creating a new thread you'll be prompted with similar threads.
These are only a few of the features the new forum has, but altogether our testing has shown thus far that

In this toolbox you will find helpful tips for digital typography. For those of you new to the topic, let's start with a short explanation
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible.
Pretty simple, eh? Basically as you are reading this you are "reading typography". What I will refer to in this article is digital artistic typography, though. This is not the everday typography you see on street signs, books or on websites.
It can be anything! Which is amazing and scary at the same time

Discovering dA & Creating my Account:
I discovered dA many, many years ago when I used to search for Digimon fanart at my friend's house! Due to the fact that I was pretty young and didn't have a computer with an internet connection, I didn't know much about this site nor did I understand what it was all about. Back then, when I read that people used "Photoshop" to create their art, I actually thought that "Photoshop" was some kind of store you could go to for making art!!! *hides face in embarrassment*
I decided to create an account 2 years ago after I was browsing dA for inspiration

The New Way To Write JournalsSta.sh Writer's toolbar and sidebar have been incorporated into the Write a Journal Entry page to make for a more dynamic journal creation experience! The New Way To Write Journals2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
New! The Sta.sh sidebar now gives you direct access to community-created emoticons! The Emoticon tab of Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been updated to display both official emoticons and recently popular emoticons created by community members. Both sections have been given "Show more" buttons, so that you can explore either section in addition to searching for a specific emote using the sidebar's search box.
Some of the most highly requested features for the Journal submission page have been present in Sta.sh Writer for some time, such as rich-text formatting and a formatting toolbar. With Sta.sh Writer's advanced capability added, writing a Journal becomes even easier than before. All of Sta.sh Writer's tools are available, and because the journal is being created
Good Story Advice and the Power of PatienceI recently picked up a copy of Stephen King's the Dark Tower I and while I've yet to read the actual story, the book opens with a thoughtful introduction that contains a number of insightful pieces of commentary. However, the particular part of this opening introduction that really stood out to me was the portion where King mentioned Tolkien's influence on him as a youth and as a writer. He talks about how wildly popular Tolkien's work was with kids growing up around that time, and how reading Tolkien's work eventually inspired his own. In King's own words:Good Story Advice and the Power of Patience3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"But although I read the books in 1966 and 1967, I held off writing. I responded (with a rather touching wholeheartedness) to the sweep of Tolkien's imagination-to the ambition of his story-but I wanted to write my own kind of story, and had I started then, I would have written his. That...would have been wrong. Thanks to Mr. Tolkien, the twentieth century had all the wizards and elves it needed."
And that's a big reas

As a storyboard and comic artist, I often do a lot of fight and action scenes, having to distill a lot of motion into a single still image.
For this challenge I’d love to see what kinds of things you guys come up with and how you convey the idea of motion in a single image.

Spines and Backbones
“Backbone” as a metaphor has always evoked determination, strength of character, toughness of spirit.
It is also an indicator of alignment, of being on the right track, of having everything in life in functioning order. “Breaking” one’s back means utter devastation, paralysis, losing everything. Being “spineless” is perhaps the worst insult any man would care to ever hear about himself. And then there’s the

The Ever Evolving Icon
What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

An interesting theme and well thought-out reasoning took the judges near-unanimously. Inspired by Stephen Chobsky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower, introverted-ghost uses her feature to consider what it means to be an introvert, and does so in stylish, lyrical prose.

On the Subject of BasesFellow People of Deviantart,On the Subject of Bases3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I am here today to talk to you about Bases and Dolling.
I am not asking you to do it, or even to like it, but just to put out a standpoint that is sorely missing from this ongoing row over what a Base really is.
You may think a base is a large traced piece from anime with no skill and that the people who draw on top of them are lazy artists who just don't want to learn how to draw. Some bases are traced, but not every base.
Dolling is a hobby, something that is done for fun, and not every doller out there wants to be able to draw like a whiz kid. A lot of people hold down jobs, or full time education and just want a little fun. And so they are able to use a base that they like and draw some clothes and hair onto it, often very skillfully.
