Some stuff going onSo a week or so ago I posted that I was taking a break. That was mainly because I was over frustrated with my laptop not working with me. It kept on over heating and I couldn't really do anything on it. So I decided rather than doing everything half, I would wait and do it properly when I have a new laptop. So my very awesome boyfriend got me a fucking super awesome Gigabyte laptop and now I'm back!!!Some stuff going on2 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Character Design: An introductionCharacter Design: An introduction3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Arvalis-2012 by arvalis
What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a

When you see an artist you like and you are trying to figure his work out... the question that gets asked a lot is" How did you do it?"
What software did you use to make this effect?
What is your technique?
These are questions that won't get you anywhere. It's like asking for the fish.
A question you should probably ask is WHY did you do this?.. WHAT were you thinking?
When you ask this question, you are thinking about the principles of fishing, and not just about catching A fish.
If you wonder why, then you won't be stuck with the HOW.. you will most probably create your own "HOW", your own method of putting your WHY into existence..and this is what will really make you unique.
Once again.. this is just my take on things.

Interview with Elena and Olivia CeballosOkay so I had a chat with two of my favourite artists and good friends who work very closely in line with visual development, and they agreed to do an interview!Interview with Elena and Olivia Ceballos3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This interview was conducted several months ago, and now the twins have a freelance position at Disney Toon Studios! Congratulations ladies!
Interview with Elena and Olivia Ceballos (ELIOLI)
(My questions are in bold)
Thanks ladies for chatting to me about your work! We'll start at the basics - what got you both into animation?
Thanks for the interview! Surprisingly, our spark for this specialized art form didn't come from a Disney film! We were 7 years old, going with two other sets of twins to the theater who wouldn't be still. We went to watch Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron. Being twins (not in all cases of course), we were so in awe at the same time from that point on by the animation produced by this studio called Dreamworks Animation. We started studying up on work from James Baxter, one o
Women and Armor: Saying GOODBYE to Panty-Plate P1Hello ladies and gentlemen artists and designers and writers and anyone else who may want a rundown on my take on Women and Armor.Women and Armor: Saying GOODBYE to Panty-Plate P12 years ago in Personal More Like This
Beware: Here be cussin'!
I’m writing this because there is this gigantic upheaval in the comics, video game, Hollywood machine, etc. over how women are portrayed in popular media and I think these themes, themes of women in combat and having to use any sort of armor (or even simply getting dressed for combat) is a subject of major contention. I, for one, and kind of tired of seeing the Panty-plate or exposed important bits and then some dude (or publisher/company) telling me this female character is some sort of fighter.
Now, a little disclaimer before we get started:
While I may pull from sources about this issues and use examples to further my point, I am in NO way bashing someone’s art. Some of these people (mainly dudes) who draw these characters fucking rock. I mean:
Look at that thing. She’s a total badass and I of

Part two is going to center around warfare and battle styles, so please bare (bear? fuck it, I’m tired) with me.
This section might be complicated but don’t worry, it’s only here to be used as a reference and a guide to your own understanding.
( i really, REALLY need to get out of my apartment. I'm chomping at the bit, here. But I can't. And it's cold. > )
Open field battles with two standing groups or armies that include 100+ people.
Naval Battles with two large military or pirate ships containing 50+ people
Modern warfare: Examples of WW2 to now
Some tactical examples:
These people who fight these battles tend to have sort of advanced warning before they go into battle. This isn’t always the case, but I think it was a general courtesy across the ages. Tribes and really pissed of rebellions are probably the only ones to violate that rule.

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser
Orion's Arm SynopsisOrion's Arm Synopsis2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Orion's Arm is a tightly plotted historical timeline approximately 1,400 years in duration. Currently stories and art exist for about the first 750 years. The artwork is based on a yet to be published collection of short stories and novels which taken together make up the Orion's Arm future history.
A Timeline Graph is to be found here: Timeline.
Timeline beginning point is the establishment of a private and independent Mars settlement; this takes place within 100 years of present day.
The history spans the maturing of an interplanetary civilization resulting from an effort to terraform Mars, and extends into an era when humans begin a migration outward from the solar system, spreading out, across, and into the local arm of the galaxy.
POCKY DAY FEATURESGreetings all friends, watchers, and random passer-bys!POCKY DAY FEATURES3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Today on November 11th (11/11), there is a little random event going on in Japan in which we call it "Pocky's Day".
Q: What's a Pocky's Day?
The company that produces the snack Pocky has set 11/11 as "Pocky's Day" just to celebrate with randomness.
Conspiracy of snack companies, I know lol
You can check out their website, and see how much derp they have done so far!
I'm just joining the bandwagon to celebrate this random event for fun and have some excuses to eat pockys lol
As I have posted on my poll few days ago, I'm going to keep my words and hold "POCKY DAY FEATURES"
Anyone is welcome to join - all you gotta do is submit a deviation that's related to Pocky, and give me the link to it (you can just leave it as a comment on this journal or note me.). Then I'll be more than happy to feature it for you on my journal!
Artistic insecurityIt's funny how people seem to think that I'm all that great, just because I make the art I do, and I voice my opinion here in an occasional journal-article. Like any other artist out here, I have my own doubts about my art, and I have a hard time facing them every now and then. I'm not perfect. I'm far from where I want to be. And lately I'm quite uncertain of where I want to go with my art. It's something that is bothering me quite a bit, and blocked my creativity.Artistic insecurity2 years ago in Personal More Like This
When I started doing art again, somewhere at the start of 2010, I used to very very insecure about my art. I never joined contests because I'm terribly afraid of failing. Honestly, I would feel bad about myself for weeks if I didn't at least end up in the honorable mentions. I never made tutorials because I was afraid one of DA's members would come up and say to me: "Why are you teaching this shit? You don't know anything about art!". And although I never liked to do fanart, I wouldn't probably have dared to do it either. A

You may think to yourself that you'll be able to control it, that you won't let it get out of hand. You may think that you can just stick to a few small, shallow cuts here and there that won't be deep and that will heal quickly and easily. But you're wrong. You can't control it, it's impossible to control. It controls you. It's an addiction. The cuts will get deeper, they'll scar. They'll take weeks to months to heal and years for the scars to actually begin to fade. You'll find that soon, you depend on it. You can't go more than a few days without cutting. You'll go crazy as your skin itches and burns, your hands shake, your head pounds, your vision goes blurry as you try to keep your mind off of it, try to hold back from giving in. But you will. Comics Are ArtComic-Con Journey to the Heart of The New Summer VacationComics Are Art4 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Americans have a long summer vacation tradition of visiting the foreign capitals of the world and being sure to spend at least one day in each nation’s most iconic art museum. In Paris, we visit the Louvre. In Madrid, the Prado. In Rome, the Borghese. We feel far more comfortable in identifying the different peoples of our planet through examples of their greatest art works than we do about identifying ourselves as being represented by any one iconic “American” art museum or artist. Maybe the country is just too big for one musuem and so it has always fallen to our pop arts to carry the true visual narrative of what’s going on in the hearts and minds of the masses.
Comic-Con has become the new arts and culture go-to in domestic summer vacation destin

Personal reasonsOver a year ago a person got very offended by an old comic of mine and wanted to explain to me why it was offensive. When they wrote to me I had long since understood that and deleted it from my own galleries, but they had found it on Tumblr and felt it was important to talk about NOW. At first I didn't respond because a lot of things were going on in my life and I needed to not stress about it, but then they started shouting on Tumblr about it and got more people shouting at me and I finally gave in. I tried to explain to the person what my thoughts had been behind it at the time but that I no longer felt that way, but they kept going.Personal reasons1 year ago in Personal More Like This
At the same time a lot of people were writing me about minor things like if they should move to Denmark or what my opinion was about one thing or another, and I didn't respond to any of those either and some questioned me about it. All the while this person was getting all worked up and wouldn't just take my "I'm sorry but I can't do this right no

I'm tired of dealing with masculine stupidity and I am tired of being singled out BY men for the things I do. I've been used, I've been abused, I've even been MANIPULATED by a bunch of jack asses and it's gotten to a point where I can only see men as friends and nothing more. I will say that I have a girlfriend who I've gotten VERY close to, and you wouldn't BELIEVE the understanding she and I have for each other. Personally, she's probably the best relationship that I've had in a LONG time. She isn't abusive or manipulative despite being crazy as hell (the good kind). She doesn't even complain when I quiet down to listen to her about her day. She tends to rant, and I'm not so sure if I've told her this, but I think it's cute, and I'm happy that she has a mind of her own and that she's open to expressing her opinion on certain matters. My Two cents on Portfolio ReviewsYou know, I see quite a bit of portfolio on a regular basis, and even more so when I go to comic con and CTN.My Two cents on Portfolio Reviews3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time around was the same thing, I saw quite a few portfolios. Some good ones and some that miss the mark.
There were a few in particular that caught my eye.. a few extremely good ones, and a few that just didn't work, and I wanted to try and share my opinions about portfolios in general.
This is just my point of view, based on MY experience and definitely not a definitely law, rule, or "must do". Just what I noticed in many student's and young professional's portfolios.
The first thing that strikes me is how similar portfolios can be from one student to another..I can almost always tell when one student is from Art Center, San Jose State, Otis, Sheridan or any other major school. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Mainly a bad thing though
Just a few personal thoughts on portfolios since I just came back from comic con and saw a ton over there.
Your portfolio should be a r
