Barbed Wire BalladBarbed Wire Ballad4 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
Bring more barbed wire. Bring the heavy rolls
of twisted steel and metal thorns. Wear
heavy gloves, unspool the wire from the roll,
make loops atop the wall. Bring more.
Bring more barbed wire. Here are metal stakes
on which it may be hung. Go on and on.
Here is a wire cutter for when we are done,
but that will not be soon. Bring more.
Bring more barbed wire. Here are people
to keep out, there are people to confine,
here a place to make secure, here we are
on our side, thank God. Bring more.
Here are people, there are people,
here a border, here a barrier,
here are places, here are people,
here a wall and here the wire. Bring more.

a whitewashed fence looks orange beneath the lamplight and
i think she's beautiful, limpid on last autumn's leaves
her knees are stark against the dirt back drop as the bruises blossom
like varying species of olives mounted upon her calves
hand in hand, we stumble through the deadened plots where
the drying sheets look more like billowing, middle-eastern scarves
and the pink fireworks rocket across the asphalt as her
stomach explodes out her throat and into a slew of adjectives
Water MusicWater Music4 years ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
It begins without a word - water music.
There will be singing, there will be a song.
But it begins with breath held in - water music.
It begins with stillness and with form.
A partial face, a single hand - water music.
One wish - to hide; another - to be known.
The red of lips, the green of leaf - water music.
To hide this way is not to be alone.
The image of a moment - water music.
Then it passes and a breath is drawn.
An artist makes an image - water music.
And a poet sees and makes a song.

- He Who Shapes -He Who Shapes- He Who Shapes -6 years ago in Spoken Word More Like This
I can make a crime look like a love scene,
a train accident feel so poetic you will be happy with tears,
a nuclear explosion melt your heart with pleasure -
that's the artist's gift...
But I can't bring those people back from the dead.
However, I can give you the illusion of inner peace.
That's why I created God for you.

I held the roseI held the rose4 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
I held the rose and then I heard it ring.
I put it to my ear to take the call.
The bloom was soft but then I felt a thorn.
I'm sure there is a scratch and maybe blood.
Is this how roses are supposed to work?
Hard Words Had Come and NestedHard Words Had Come and Nested5 years ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
Hard words had come and nested in my hair,
and so I cut it short, I cut it off.
But then they flew and flew around my head,
a little swarm of hurt I could not bear.
I raised and waved my hands like one gone mad,
and knew this would not do. This would not do.
I grew my hair again and wore a scarf.
I drew it tight, a knot beneath my chin.
The hard words could not make their nests again,
but I could often feel them clutch and claw
and worry the cloth, and in time I said
"Enough!" My hair was long, I loosed the knot,
I tossed the scarf away. The words fell down,
to seem so small and sad and tired on the ground.

Noi o sfârşim pe-a noastră.
Aşa cum închei un nastur rupt,
La gândul că ea n-are să observe
Pentru că azi e nimic altceva decât o zi
Ziua celor cinci
Minute aducătoare de moarte.

go on and sound it.
Take the exit,
be glad you found it.
Basket full of trouble,
boxcar full of stone.
Leave one here,
drag one home.
Cactus Cathy and Gentleman Jim
met in the desert and went for a swim.
Dreams are trains
without a track -
they take us away
and don't bring us back.
Elevators go up
all the way to the top -
in dreams they may
refuse to stop.
Forgetting is lovely, remembering too;
either one can make you happy,
either one can make you blue.
Gather your wits, if you can, if you're able,
round them up and sit them at your table.
Fill their glasses, then sit back and listen;
sip your wine, don't ask too many questions.
Hope is the open hand,
the open hand, the open hand.
Iodine Jack and Indigo Jane
met in purple passion,
parted in the rain.
Jokes and jests and japes and jive
help us all to stay alive.
Kitchen sinks are in here too,
one for me and one for you.
Lateral Lucy and Parallel Phil
never have met and never will.
