UPDATE 6/11: AnimeNEXT was awesome and now THE PROJECT IS FUNDED!!! So awesome!! Thank you everyone! I posted the shirt design as well as the new pack of stock to reward everyone for helping me hit 75% by June 9th.
The lower reward levels (the digital stock and the shirt) are super important to the success of the project. These lower levels help with the subsidized price of the book, so if you are interested in supporting me and the project but you don't necessarily need or want the book, please consider these lower levels! ^____^

As part of Traditional Art History Month I will be interviewing some of the Traditional Art Community, including your lovely TradART Community Volunteers
Today it's the lovely STelari, your Community Volunteer for Traditional Art
Hi STelari, tell us a little about yourself and your style of Art.
I'm a creation addict... and my name is Sylwia (: My personality and interests are clearly visible in what and how I do; a bit twisted, with a creepy shell, sometimes rigid, but I tend to hide a smile in details that require your search.
I'm crazy about trying new things and techniques and what you can see in my dA gallery is just a tip of an iceberg.
What is it that attracts you to Traditional Art?
It's traditional (: Anything I do has a connection to the past and it gives me a chill when I think that some of the techni

After quite a gap I've decided to try re-launching my long running emote news article series. I've had a couple of people mention how much they enjoyed it and now I've got a bit of extra time I feel I can give it another go. It's coming back in near the same format and with a slight change to the name 'So I heard you like emotes??' instead of the old 'So i herd u liek emotes??' as I wanted to drop the chatspeak element. I hope to post it every 1-2 weeks depending on how busy the community is at the time - So if you want more frequent articles keep posting more art .
If you enjoy the series please do let me know, and if you have any suggestions or news you'd like advertised give me a note
As a fan of The Avengers I thought both of these Avengermotes sets by EmotiKai were rather clever and well designed. Each of the characters is easily recognisable and nicely pixell

The Dead Places
The Visual Delicacy of Decay
It’s easy to think of art in terms of what is instantly pleasing to the eye, artworks which
evoke a feeling of joy and hopefulness and blissful peacefulness or ecstatic exultation.
This is the consideration of art as something that helps propel us forward through life – to out future great
deeds, our career victories, or dreams of coming big events. But there is a peak to every life. At some point all
people, and all places, and even all ideas have to begin the inevitable decline that is the other balancing half of a lifetime.

Second, how will he know if they match his body chemistry?
Third and most important to me, I wonder if he realizes that lilac is a shrub and doesn't really come in meadow form?

After much deliberation......it's time to announce the Cubism Messenger Bag Design Challenge Semi-Finalists!After much deliberation...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
We would like to start off by saying congratulations to everyone who entered this extremely difficult Design Challenge. Cubism is a very specific type of art, and we applaud all the deviants who gave it a shot. We know the judges are going to have a difficult time as well when they have to narrow down the top 100 designs, voted for by you, the community, to only two winning designs. The two Finalists who are chosen will each win $1,500 cash, 10 messenger bags with their winning design printed on them, and their bags will be sold in the deviantART Shop!
We know, we know what you're thinking: get to the good stuff already! All right, you've asked for it. Here are the top 100 Cubism Messenger Bag Designs as voted for by you!

A Brief History of TypographyA Brief History of TypographyA Brief History of Typography3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
A little insight into the history of not only Typography, but also of written language. This article will be far from covering it all, but focuses on highlighting some of the major events and periods in the history of Typography.
From the Greek roots τύπος typos = "impression" and -γραφία -graphia = "writing".
~ 30th Century BC – 200 AD
Or "Script of Nails / Cuneiform Script" is probably the oldest form of written text. This calligraphic form of writing was carved into clay tablets.
The Latin Alphabet
~ 800 BC – present
This is the basic alphabet used in all Western languages. The Romans based it among others
Manip Challenges #001If you've been on dA for a while, you may remember the manip challenges I used to run. The original manip challenges were chat based 2 hour challenges, but as I don't have that kind of time any more (the event would be all day long, with 3 to 5 challenges in succession), I decided to adapt them to be two weeks long and not in a chatroom instead.Manip Challenges #0013 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Wow! What a response! We're through the first week (still one to go!) of the challenge and already there are over 20 entries! Thank you so much for making this site & this group fun
You are given 8 stock images (see below) of which you have to use at least TWO in a way that we don't have to go hunting for them with a looking glass. You can use additional stock, but I ask you not to use premades - this is a challenge for your skills, not for someone else's.Your entry has to be a photomanipulation or a digital mixed media piece with a good deal of photomanipulation in it.Pl

Typography is a rather obscure field, which is quite odd because typography is in everything you read. As such, it’s very important for a graphic designer to know everything there is to know about typography and preferably also the history and anatomy of typefaces. Bad typography is usually only consciously noticeable by type geeks (like me), however even someone who knows absolutely nothing about typography will find text with bad typography harder to read. In this article you will learn some basic principles and features to advance your typography.
Before we have a look at the features to improve your typography we have to select the right software. A few features which will be discussed in this article can be used pretty much regardless of the software but for most things you have to use genuine design software, so a program like Microsoft Word won’t suffice. You can achiev

In the previous article of the typography series I presented some of the basic principles of type design and we started designing a geometric sans typeface such as Futura. In this article we will expand that typeface and add italics and alternate weights. Or rather, I will show you how to design italics and briefly present how you can modify your regular weight typeface to create alternate weights rather than having to re-draw the whole letter.

I briefly mentioned last week that the date for the next emote community chat event has been set. i can confirm that it will take place on:
Saturday, 23rd Feb @ 9PM GMT in the #Seniors chatroom
We have organised 3 fun events (including an emote trivia session) that are suitable for not only emoticonists, but anyone from the dA community. Each event will have an awesome set of prizes on offer, so it is well worth joining in, even if you can't make the whole thing.
We are accepting prize donations. If you would like to offer anything please note myself or leave a comment on this poll.
We would also really appreciate if you could help promote the event though journals, polls and word of mouth. We would love to see a great turnout for this special event.

I've had this sitting on my mind for quite some time now, just. Wanted to wait for an appropriate time to post this.
I'm not going to single anyone out and I'm not going to outright condemn anyone for anything. I would rather just state a few things regarding comments consisting of very little more than "This reminds me of..."
I know the majority of these comments aren't meant to be offensive or even insulting; they're just benign observations based on a very human trait to want to combine things of a similar nature together. We're reminded of things we've seen before on a regular basis and it's part of the same reason why we tend to find human faces in inanimate objects and obscure shapes; it's completely natural and we all do it to a certain extent.
That being said however, imagine spending countless hours working on a piece and pouring your blood, sweat, and tears into it. It's your brainchild; your baby and a piece of yourself and your imagination that you're esse
Why Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not great2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Type design is a rather obscure profession but even the typefaces themselves don’t get too much attention by the general public. Most people could only name a few typefaces, but among those few are always Times New Roman, Arial and Helvetica. Well-known and popular or not, in this article I will show you why Helvetica is not the great typeface people perceive it to be.
Arial is often frowned upon due to its history, but what most people don’t know is that Helvetica has a very similar history. A bit different, but as far as I’m concerned it’s just as dubious and embarrassing. As most people who are interested in typefaces might know, Max Miedinger is the designer of Helvetica. However, what most people probably don’t know is that Max Miedinger was not a type designer. Miedinger st
Artists's Toolbox Project Educate Week: TabletsTablet questions. Anyone who hangs out in the digital art forum or the hardware forums sees these threads constantly, and they pop up other places to. Which tablet should I get? Is it worth it to get a tablet? What's a good starter tablet? This article will cover the basics of drawing tablets: what they are, what they do, if you need one, and which one you should get.Artists's Toolbox Project Educate Week: Tablets2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is the difference between a drawing tablet and a touchscreen tablet such as an Ipad? Can I draw with both?
To put it simply, a drawing tablet is used solely for art related endeavors, there's no apps or other functions involved. You can't stick a calender and fruit ninja on a drawing tablet. But a touchscreen tablet has tons of different functions and is all touch controlled.
So, can you use a touchscreen tablet for art? Technically, yes. But it can be challenging. Touchscreen tablets aren't as precise and the apps you can get to draw with aren't generally very extensive. This is fine
CEA UPDATE: Clarifying the Definition of PornThe official definition of " pornography " has been modified at several points over the lifetime of deviantART in an attempt to bring greater clarity in the wording used however portions of the community have demonstrated a tendency to be confused on the exact definition and continue to report things which fit their own personal viewpoints; today we attempt to clarify things.CEA UPDATE: Clarifying the Definition of Porn6 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
The official policy for deviantART prohibits the submission of pornographic works. While the community as a whole, with few exceptions, agrees that this policy is required there are many who demonstrate a marked misunderstanding of exactly what is and is not defined as " pornographic " under the current policy. This misunderstanding often leads to many reports being marked as invalid due to the deviation not being officially considered to be pornography and dissatisfaction tends to lead to some community members attempting to explain the outcome by maligning the staff or speculating that deviantART

Second Place: $20 USD or the equivalent in dA points
The design of this creature is so cool, while also being really appealing to look at! I like that he lacks legs.
Third Place: $10 USD or the equivalent in dA points
This is super eerie and interesting to look at at the same time, one of the few that lacked a definitive human form. Worm-like creatures are always very interesting.
Some special mentions, other entries I debated against these that I also adored (they will be given a $5 or 400 DA Point honorary prize):
There were a lot of very good entries, and a wide range of macabre subjects!

With the growth in popularity of the e-book many authors are seeing a glimmer of hope and realizing that they can get their work out there without having to break into the velvet roped publishing house exclusive party. This means that you will begin to get even more solicitations from those authors looking for artists to bring visuals to their words.
If you have a website or have done any degree of online advertising of your artwork, you have probably gotten an e-mail with a similar message as the title. If not, you will at some point. It's best to be prepared now. For those who have gotten it, nine times out of ten you aren’t sure how to respond to it, what should you ask, how do you respond?

Sometimes you come across a deviation that deserves special attention. It catches your eye in such a way that you're compelled to craft a response that goes above and beyond a normal comment. Or perhaps a fellow deviant is having a tough time with a particular aspect of their work, and you know just what they need to take their art to the next level. As a good Internet citizen and art enthusiast, you want to help them out, but a normal comment doesn't quite suit your purpose.
For these situations and more, we've given everyone the ability to write a Critique.
What is Critique?
DeviantART's Critique system is designed to help artists get in-depth, critical feedback and commentary on their work. Valued feedback through Critique promotes creative growth as an artist and draws special attention to work. Critiques are also a way for committed art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and fans to publish real criticism,

I went for my pre-op exam last Thursday. Mixed reviews. My labs came back good. A1C is down to 6.2. Did not pass the EKG. The beat in the atrial (top chambers) of my heart are too long. Have to see a heart specialist Tuesday. I'll update when I get home. My Dr. said it's nothing dangerous, but must be checked out before surgery. Murphey is riding my shoulder again. Other than that I am having fun teasing the residents of the building. They are such fun. They love my hair. Some of them will even pet it. I measured my braid, from the hairband on the ponytail to the end and it's over 28 inches long. I can't measure it when it's down, but it comes past the end of my spine. I promised Mom I wouldn't cut it again, so we shall see how long it gets. I'll get my daughter to take some pics when she
