1. In Europe "The Customer is Always Wrong". What blows my mind is that the smaller the business, the more they subscribe to this attitude. You would think that with everyone whining about the poor state of the economy, stagnant incomes, skyrocketing inflation, etc that small businesses would go out of their way to satisfy and thereby keep their customers... but no. Here its all about giving the evil eye and the grumpiest service to anyone who walks in the door, and knife-fights-to-the-death over returns or warranty claims. I never thought I'd say this but I really miss Wal-Mart.
2. Stores charge you for free 'Bonuses'. Manufacturers throw out bonus items/larger size bottles/free samples, etc intended as a free buying incentive for customers. Here they mark that $#!% up as if the manufacturer intended it as a bonus for the retailer. Yo

Through The Lens #4 ~ Camera-less PhotographyCamera-less PhotographyThrough The Lens #4 ~ Camera-less Photography1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
The definition of photography is that of creating an image using the recording of light. This could be done by applying light-sensitive emulsion to paper and then exposing to a light source for a set amount of time. By using a camera that houses light sensitive film or other materials. Or by today's most prevalent method, that of a camera with a digital sensor that records information about the light. Some of the first photographs ever made were created without the use of a camera so I chose for this months discussion to highlight some of these techniques, from photograms to x-rays, and to broaden awareness and increase the inspiration to create photographic works that do not rely on a camera to be created.
Carrie Witherell - Cyanotype Photograms
A photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitiv

Following is a beautiful letter written by Sergio Larrain in 1982 to his nephew, who had previously asked Larrain where to begin to become a photographer.
First and foremost, you have to have a camera that fits you well, one that you like, because it’s about feeling comfortable with what you have in your hands: the equipment is key to any profession, and it should have nothing more than the strictly necessary features. Secondly, get yourself an enlarger, the easiest and most useful you can find (the smallest manufactured by LEITZ is the best for the 35mm format, it will last your whole lifetime).
The game is going on an adventure, like a sailor boat: drop the sails. Go to Valparaiso or Chiloè, be in the street all day long, wander and wander in unknown places, sit under a tree when you’re tired, buy a banana

Through The Lens #15 ~ SurrealismMan Ray, Glass Tears, 1932Through The Lens #15 ~ Surrealism2 months ago in Art Features More Like This
In the "First Manifesto of Surrealism", published in 1924 by founder André Breton, he describes the new movement as follows:
"SURREALISM, noun. Pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, or otherwise, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations.
ENCYCLOAEDIA. Philosophy. Surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of association heretofore neglected, in the omnipotence of the dream, and in the disinterested play of thought. It leads to the permanent destruction of all other psychic mechanisms and to its substitution of them in the solution of the principal problems of life."

I walked beside the evening sea,
And dreamed a dream that could not be;
The waves that plunged along the shore
Said only -- "Dreamer, dream no more!"
But still the legions charged the beach;
Loud rang their battle-cry, like speech;
But changed was the imperial strain:
It murmured -- "Dreamer, dream again!"
I homeward turned from out the gloom --
That sound I heard not in my room;
But suddenly a sound that stirred
Within my very breast, I heard.
It was my heart, that like a sea
Within my breast beat ceaselessly:
But like the waves along the shore,
It said -- "Dream on!" and "Dream no more!"

"discussion of photography is dominated by the concept of time. Photographs appear as devices for stopping time and preserving fragments of the past, like flies in amber"
As 2014 comes to a close we are reminded of the passing of time. Another year has slipped through our fingers like sand through the cracks. Yet the new year will come rushing in to provide us with trillions of new moments and beginnings. It seems fitting for this month's edition of TTL to discuss time and its relationship to photography.
"What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.”
The camera's shutter has the ability to violently seize a moment in time and fix it in place forever. This is a particularly useful tool that photographers can use to see things that happen too quickly for human perceptions to fully grasp. Thus, the viewer is given the

Noisy angel wails and sings and roars
like 150 electric guitars.
Ominous angel hints at what is coming next -
bad or good, not quite what one expects.
Practical angel brings you coffee and cake,
says, "Have something to eat, for goodness' sake."
Questioning angel can bring you to your knees -
stops and helps you up when you say, "please."
Rebuilding angel looks at the damage and nods.
The odds of success? No need to know the odds.
Singing angel sounds like most anyone,
but you want more when the song is done.
Transient angel comes and goes and comes
and goes and comes and goes and comes.
Urban angel loves the city streets,
and all the up and down and in-between people it meets.
Versatile angel is gentle and strong,
can build you a house or sing you a song.
Wishing angel makes a world with a wish,
says, "Come in! Can you see it? Here it is!"
X-Man Angel has wings made of feathers -
although for a time they were

FOLLOW THE LIGHT
Is there really such a thing as good or bad light?
There is gorgeous light, little light, strange light, dim light, golden light, light so wonderful it makes your whole body hurt, scary light, difficult light, blueish light, morning light, evening light, light at night, light that feels like lead, the sulfuric-yellowish light shortly before a hailstorm, mixed light, the rose tinted light of Eos, the greek goddess of dawn, soft light and hard light, harsh light, artificial light, autumn light, light that tickles you in the morning and wakes you up, maybe there's even ugly light.
Isn't referring to different light situations as good or bad really an approach that keeps you from tackling challenges? One that stops you from trying to find something that makes all kinds of different light work for you? One that stops you from experimenting with light? One that might prevent you from taking th
The Adventure of a PhotographerCan photography lead to madness?The Adventure of a Photographer7 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Today I am sharing with you a short story, "The Adventure of a photographer" by Italo Calvino, famous italian fiction writer and journalist (1923-85). It is only 6 pages long, you can read the whole text here: http://beauty.gmu.edu/AVT459/AVT459-001/Calvino.pdf
It is the story of the approach to photography, and then of the obsessive relationship between the (at first) nonphotographer Antonio Paraggi and photography's medium, purpose, and philosophy. Starting from annoyance, then a frequent use and then to a maniacal use of photography, overwhelmed by the disproportion between the immense potentialities of the medium and their possible practical uses.
I wanted to share it with you because it is food for thought for a photographer. I hope that someone will reach the end of this long journal and share with me his/her thoughts...
"When spring comes, the city's inhabitants, by the hundreds of thousands, g
