Being Historical with doughboycafeHistory is cool. I could try to explain why, but if you aren't already interested, there's a better way to get on board: read and/or write historical fiction. Only...I can't say anything there, I don't know anything about historical fiction!Being Historical with doughboycafe1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
Luckily, dA has a strong cadre of historical fiction writers. I (metaphorically) sat down with one of the outstanding, doughboycafe:
What is "historical fiction"?
I think that it is, quite simply, fiction set somewhere in history. Though it usually draws on one or more actual events, we get to make up the whos and the whys and the hows.
That isn't to say it isn't accurate, however. Historical fiction, good historical fiction, is well researched and the details of the time period, social situation, and culture should reflect real ideas, technology, and cultural values.
If you have to do the same amount of research, why not nonfiction?
I guess that all depends on your

How To Photograph Your CraftsThe absolute number one cause of rejection of DD suggestions for most Artisan Craft CVs is poor photography. There is nothing worse than seeing an otherwise brilliant piece ruined by a dodgy photo. But even beyond DD acceptance, if you want to people on dA to be able to appreciate your skill you need to be able to show your work off to advantage. How To Photograph Your Crafts2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Sometimes I'll tell a self-suggester that I can't feature their work because of the quality of the photography and they'll inevitably reply, "Oh, I'll have to get a better camera."
Repeat after me: the tools never make the artist.
You don't need a $9000 sewing machine to stitch a dress, you don't need a $1000 stand mixer to bake a cake, and you similarly don't need a top of the range SLR to take a brilliant photograph. It's all in how you take the photo.
To help us understand photography concepts a little more, Fella is going to help us out. Say hi Fella!
Choose your RivalHi there Ryceballs it is I Ry-Spirit of the East. Here to talk about something that I have never mentioned much before.. And that is the topic of 'Rivals'.Choose your Rival2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ash had Gary Oak, Goku had Vegeta, Naruto had Sasuke. Do you believe that having a rival can help you improve in whatever you do? I do. I remember back in High School I got lots of praises from my classmates for being the greatest at drawing, I liked to draw in my diaries and homeworks alot Which explains why my marks were soooo FREAKIN TERRIBLE!. And there was a friend (I used the term very loosely) who would always try to find ways to make people feel like crap, this time it was no exception, he figured out what I liked and stabbed that piece of pure innocent heart with a sharp poisonous knife, he told me my drawings is poo compared to this other guy our year, I have never seen that guy's artworks before so my friend went as far as to sneak into the library storage room where everyone left their bags at, opened up the guy's bag an

25,000 die from hunger every day, a million is withering away in prisons due to the war on drugs for victimless crimes, human rights violations abound, preventable disease and lack of clean water is killing millions per year, banking cartels immune from prosecution are stealing trillions, drones are blowing up children in half, etc, etc..
Fuck all that, right? The media didn't tell you to care. Take the red pill, friends, and walk away. Keep your mind under your own control. This is not a lack of compassion the three fellow human beings who tragically lost their lives today. It's a lack of respect for those who use every marketable tragedy to further their ends and profits. I
A new place for RoleplayingHi folks!A new place for Roleplaying3 years ago in Personal More Like This
For those of you that are big nerds like me and like to Roleplay, read on!
Those that are interested but not sure... read on if you'd like!
Those that hate Roleplay (RP) or just don't care for it... keep browsin' art!
I grew up on the internet as a teenager doing rules-based but still freeform live chat type Roleplaying. It was great fun and I had a blast! Sadly there are not many places around that have that sort of thing anymore so I made a place. It is MUCK based, which means it's text based RP, sort of in a chat setting. It's a bit like role-playing in a living book, where you connect and it's all text, but each area is described and you can move around the textual world.
My Roleplay World is called Haezyn. Haezyn is sorta/kinda like an alternate earth with a bit of magic and talking critters.
- Haezyn has some 'base rules' that define the Lore of Haezyn and help create guidelines, to prevent unfair power-playing and so that there is some w

A couple days ago, I was spending my time to expand my new horizons of photography that I've been dreaming for- aerial photography. That's something I've neglected too much because of the stuff in my head was, lot's of crap bothered me, health and life issues, damned small crap kept me away from realizing things what I really wanted to do.
When I've jumped out of a plane after passing the second layer of clouds, at 4200m elevation...
I felt like Link from Skyward Sword jumping out of his Loftwing.
The experience of skydiving is very immense and surreal. My most favourite moment is when I crawl on the edge of plane's "door" and giving my glare downward. Your first thought is like that:
Still, being in the place it does feel earthy and natural for your body. You feel like your body and mind are connected togeth
PS4 vs Xbox One who wins?If you like videogames like me, chances are you have been aware of what's happening in E3. Everyone's talking about it now. Since a few weeks ago with the whole TV TV TV TV TV TV TV SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS Xbox conference I have been pretty unhappy with things that are going on with Microsoft. You can't play used games, you need to log in to your internet at least once a day to play games, and it feels like you are actually RENTING a game rather than owning it if you know what I mean. OK then at E3 today they announce the price for the Xbox One.. wait for it. $499 USD. Mmmmk alright, I kinda expected it to be expensive.. but here's the part that surprised EVERYBODY, it costs 429 Pounds and 499 Euros. Wait a minute what? So I quickly pulled out my little pink calculator and found out that for the UK thats equivalent of $666 USD (Interesting its also the number for Satan) and 662 USD for the Europeans. But never had one where people can write down things about themselves for OTHER people to know about. Are perceptions slowing you down?Without the wonderful phenomenon of perception, we human beings would be highly confused creatures, unable to understand the world around us. On a more abstract and less biological level, perception plays a large role in how we form opinions. A lot of the world around us is based in absolutes, for example: apples are, and will forever will be, either red or green however, there are less rigid "rules" so to speak for other categories of "things", art being one of them. Art is a forever evolving animal, changing, growing, warping, and expanding. It crosses over boundaries and breaks through barricades, it whispers and shouts at the same time. Art is very powerful, infectious and potent. All of these things explain why we feel almost violated when we see art we do not like (which is a discussion for a later blog ) What we will be discussing here today are our perceptions of art. One of the many wonderful things about the arts (all of them, not only the visual arts) arAre perceptions slowing you down?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Helpful Hints On Reading and Discussing Poetry
Contest Information Below!
Hi! Welcome to projecteducate’s week on poetry forms. I’m here to talk about poetry in more general terms, which might help you with the rest of the week. As a great lover of poetry, it makes me incredibly sad when I see a comment on dA that says
I just don’t get poetry
I like this poem, but I don’t know why
I can’t possibly say anything about this poem, it’s just so much better than I could do
If you can see yourself in any of those comments, this article is for you! By the end of it, you’ll have some idea of what to think about when reading and later commenting on a poem, as well as the opportunity to win some points in a contest. Obviously no article is going to teach you “eve

There are those of you that are accusing her of "stealing" from me, that she copied my work "Eyes of the Night"
I am here to say that, no, she did not. There are similarities to be sure, but she has already stated that this is a tribute to some of her favorite anthro artists, including me, and no part of this is directly copied from any piece of art or any artist. Copying anyone was not her intention, and I think the piece is coming along beautifully. I hope she finishes it!
You are all entitled to your opinions, but please, -knock it off-. Would you just let artists create already? We artists will find out if someone is directly stealing from us, believe me, but this petty "this pose looks vaguely like the one so-and-so

Training your eye is very important. To take your photography to the next level and grow as an artist, you need to know what looks good, have an open mind and build your own style.
Point at the first thing that attracts your attention (often being the brightest point in the image)
Try to mentally trace the path your eye takes around the image (it's like connecting the dots in order to discover the story, in this case)
Has the photographer used the rule of thirds? Or a different type of placing the elements in the image?
Has the photographer shot from his eye level? Or chose a different point of view?
What is the photographer trying to transmit with the image?
How has the photographer used the environment to tell the story?
How has the photographer used light?
Why does the image work?
Does the image evoke an emotional response in the viewer's eye?
From the above, which can be appli

Calling all beta testers, bug lovers and feature loving deviants.
I have exciting news! devBUG is looking for some new deviants to be Alpha Tester!
But what is an alpha tester?
An Alpha tester is a bit like a Beta tester only they get to test out new features before Beta testers do.
So, what do alpha testers get to do?
As an alpha tester you'll have the chance to talk to staff and developers about new and upcoming features, and help find and report any bugs that there may be, before it goes to beta testers or th

Here are some handy resources concerning the "free art"-people. First of all, there's this handy flowchart called "Should I Work For Free?.
If they say they'll pay you with:
-Eventual cut of the profit when profits are made
-No pay, since artists "shouldn't be sell-outs, but draw for fun"
Then run for the hills and get away as fast as you can.
Because if it's for a game, a comic or another for-profit project, the most normal response should be "Fuck you. Pay me." (worded politer, though that goes without saying).
Spec-work? -- Fuck you. Pay me.
"We don't have the budget for 20 sprite-sheets, but we'll sell this game and your name will be in the credits!" -- Fuck you. Pay me.
