To be clear, because I will likely be judging the contest, this entry is ineligible to win.

It is submitted to serve as an example of what we want in this contest. We seem to be getting a lot of irrelevant entries, and hopefully this will clear up any misconceptions; we want tutorials about paintings for this, not paintings.

I've had a few questions on how I paint metal. >> here is the short version, I tried to keep it aseasy and short as possible for ya, hope it helps :)

This took me 2 hours to paint, making the tutorial inbetween so something like this should take about 30 minutes max.

EDIT : Im aware of the spelling mistakes, I will correct that. sorry!

Mandi's Speed Painting Tutorial

I decided to document my speed painting procedure as a few have asked and I'd like to contribute to the vast amount of resources available on DA that have taught me so much.

In this tutorial I cover the steps from a blank canvas to a completed painting. I also list some general 'technique' advice you'd usually find in an instructional setting.

In short, I hope you find it useful! Enjoy!!

Thank you ~MigrantJ and =One-Vox for all you have taught me through your own works and advice. Without the help I've received from both of you, I would know a lot less about painting and Photoshop.

Sept. 1 2010 Update Whoa, thank you *EVERYONE* who has commented on and faved this tutorial! I'm thrilled that so many people find it helpful and I hope it inspires you to create something amazing. Thank you! :)

UPDATE 7/31/2011: I've uploaded a slightly revised version. Content is still the same. :)
_

This tutorial is very extensive and will be published in (at least) four parts.

:star: IN THIS SECTION: :star:
Skin basics: A simple but in-depth look that expands beyond the usual shadow-midtone-highlight formula, and how to use each tonal range most effectively.

:bulletblue: :new: SECTION II: Skin tones. how to apply the basic formula to light, medium, dark, and fantasy skin tones.

COMING SOON:
:bulletred: SECTION III: Background color and ambient light. How surrounding colors affect skin.
:bulletred: SECTION IV: Building a skin tone, blending and texturing. The technical section showing how to paint skin start to finish.
__

This tutorial uses mostly digital work as examples, but the theory behind it should apply to ALL mediums. But of course it goes without saying that this is hardly the end-all-be-all of skin painting tutorials. Just my way of thinking about it.

I tried to make this accessible for artists of all skill levels. Intermediate artists will probably benefit the most. Beginners will probably find some of the principles discussed difficult to put into practice. But don’t be frustrated! The only “secret” to being a good painter is practice. And hopefully even advanced painters will be able to glean something useful. :)

Also-- this should go without saying, but I will say it anyway: the ONLY WAY to learn how to paint/draw anything well, let alone realistically, is to STUDY COLOR THEORY AND FORM. All the stuff I blather on about in this tutorial is meaningless unless you take the initiative to learn the fundamentals of color and figure drawing.
:star: Color theory resources can be found HERE.

Please, any questions, concerns, criticisms, etc: comment below.

Thanks so much for the DD! :)

I try to explain the process of creating a mattepainting, including
basic painting technics, using 3d elements and composing them inside your painting as well some ways of color-
grading. Please don´t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

another monster huge tutorial... but I've got screen shots and illustrations so hopefully it won't be too much information overload!

The body hair brush I made can be downloaded from here:

I'm not much of a writer or a graphic designer, so I'm always open for suggestions when it comes to making tutorials. Feel free to let me know if you found this useful/totally incomprehensible/whatever.

edit 12/18/08: Wow, thanks for the DD on this! Texture detailing is just a little thing, but I love doing it, so I'm happy to share what I've learned with you all :)
