Mary Sue is the new foot binding. If you don't know what foot binding is, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_bindingMary Sue is the new foot binding.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Why do I draw a comparison between these two? I will explain why.
Foot binding is a classic example of a sexist practice where women are limited, quite literally and in a physical sense, to the point of serious disabilities in order to live up to a certain image of feminine beauty. A notion, if you will, of what females should be. The usage of the Mary Sue term works the same way.
Yes, I know what Gary Stus are, and yes, I know they exist. However, in the case of most male characters, it's far more acceptable to make them strong/intelligent/cunning/resourceful/capable or even more than one of these.
For female characters, this is not so. The second they show themselves to be even slightly above average in any kind of way, no matter how well-balanced they are otherwise, they're termed Mary Sues. It becomes unacceptable to even think, for one second, that female fictional charact

Purging this account was more exhilarating than I expected. Mainly because it reminds me of how badly I played and broke the game known as deviantART. Really though.
Let's look at the interesting fact that I've been on the front page more times than I can count on my hands and toes and I've received 3 daily deviations as well as seniority. All for the price of being a major dick who picks just the opportune moments to pretend to have a heart [which I don't, by the way. Not for a crowd of posers looking to reap the benefits of being a follower].
Admittedly, you're all not like that--in fact a good many of you are great people trying to improve yourselves as artists. But then there are those morons who do nothing but follow. Followers who enjoy sitting there and vacantly hoping someone notices you. They won't. Unless you're amazing beyond comprehension--but most of you aren't. Sorry, it's true. I have had countless people noting me and asking me to advertise for them or they'll s

Forum Features #35 - August: Cake!Once again, the Community Relations team is here to feature the artworks of deviantART's beloved forumers!Forum Features #35 - August: Cake!2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Once a month, we select one active member from the forums and we feature his or her gallery. This is someone we believe represents the forums well with both good forum-abilities and art.
As we're kind (and awesome), we also decided to give an opportunity for everybody to get featured! Every month, we create a thread in the Deviation Thumbshare Forum with a particular theme. This thread is made into a sticky for easy access. All you have to do is post thumbs of your artwork that match the theme and, at the end of the month, we select our favorite thumbs from that thread and feature them in the next news article.
The best thing is that being an active member of the forums is the only requirement!

Project: Satisfy 1,000 Deviants.Hello and welcome to my Project fellow deviants.Project: Satisfy 1,000 Deviants.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'll get straight to the point. I have started a Project which is called "Satisfy 1,000"
What is the Project about?
The aim of the project is to collect 1,000 Points by the end of this year. When the amount gets collected it will be distributed to 1,000 fellow deviants.
What I want is, to help other deviants experience the joy of receiving points. There are many deviants who would just love to receive a single point. Instead of giving away points to please 10-50 Deviants why not make everyone happy? Instead of making a contest or giveaway why not just make everyone feel that they've won something? The joy of receiving points is great, I've experienced it and that's why I want people to feel that same joy of receiving points.
How can we help you?
You can help me with the Project by donating Points, I currently have 7,500 Points.
Any amount of points is appreciated and welcome. I hope that before 2013, I with the help of everyone here can

I'm going to do my 1st and hopefully continues point giveaway.

#1) Please watch -- but only if you enjoy my work (not a requirement to practicpate in the draw) Its highly encouraged though but wont increase chances of winning cause that's a random draw.
#2) Fav this journal.. That is a requirement because I will use it to pool in the participants into a draw.
#3) Read the first 2 rules.
The countdown will work based on entries when we have 125 Favs to this journal that means 125 participants. Will start a 48 Hour Count Down to the Draw.. At 48 Hours.. Will close participation and update journal with everyone name and number! Everyone who is in the draw will be posted on here with a #.. There is no secret way to the numbers.. I'll just pull all the names and assign 1 - 2 - 3 etc..
After the names have been posted 2 Draws will be done using Random.Org. I will Screen Shot them so that people will see that this took place. At specific time and

I feel like I am finally getting busier again, which is good! I don't do well with an idle mind... I like to have things to occupy my time. I finished editing the engagement shoot photos late last week and showed them to my friend and her fiance. Thankfully, they LOVE THEM! That's a huge weight off my shoulders. I wasn't sure if they would since I hadn't done this sort of thing before. But I had a lot of fun. I can see a lot of things to improve on and got some advice from friends here that I'll be sure to take into account next time.
On the subject of photography... I got my first Daily Deviation EVER yesterday. I'm really excited about it, mostly because it's from my favorite photography category: macro. Thank you so, so much to MarcosRodriguez for selecting it. It means a lot (I promise, this is the last time I'll tag your name and thank you now, haha)!
But... that DD gave me the buying bug. I really want a macro lens The one thing I miss about my bridge camera

But here in german Cosplay scene, and perhaps also for many other countries it's really a novelty.
It can be used for paper decoration, for gemstones, paint and much more.

Early copies have already been distributed to notable videogame review sites and such. IGN is having a Mass Effect 3 Review In Progress.
Obviously, there will be some spoilers, but should you be interested in keeping up with that over the week, go read it at IGN.com.
In other spoiler-related news, a new associate of mine, goes by the name SinDr0me, asked me to showcase a rather exclusive piece of news--from what he tells me-- on his site, WeAreLegion.
This particular one has heavy spoilers pertaining to certain, unannounced, new squadmates for ME3.
Read at your own discretion: http://wearelegion.nl/news.php?fn_mode=fullnews&fn_id=18
Do you want Naked Shepard? Chances are, the answer is yes. Indeed, since the days of ME1 have fans been clamoring for more of the nudity seen--however tastefully--in the first romances. Some ev

All I knew was - there is an event where you have to run from zombies! That literally sounded like the coolest thing on earth to me. I checked out the website and was super intrigued, even though the $70+USD entry fee seemed outrageous to me. I was also apprehensive of the fact that there was no large Charity attachment to these runs, and only a link to the Red Cross at the bottom of the page, next to the sponsors. No mention of actual contribution amount or any charitable efforts. I feel like if you're gonna charge this much money for an entry fee, some of it should be for a good cause, right?
But I had just started training with Personal Trainer Nick and the March 3rd 2012 Atlanta run was

Our Ongoing Battle Against Malicious Ads
Toward the end of April, deviantART released a community-wide news article that outlined and reaffirmed our stance against advertisements that auto-play audio, contain pop-ups or redirects, and promote virus or malware activity. Three months later, we'd like to provide an update on our efforts to block malicious advertising from running on the site.
We're taking these concerns seriously
DeviantART takes all concerns on this topic very seriously and immediately implemented a number of changes to reduce the chance those type of ads would get served by our ad partners. These initial steps w

America’s Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, Just a short walk from the White House, has had its up’s and down’s over the years since opening in 1846.
The Smithsonian’s Washington complex of nineteen museums, nine research centers, and a zoo, has been enjoying a recent renaissance of reorganization and a welcome if belated introduction into the digital age.

Yes, we're back on the gun-debate-thing. And this time the pro-gun crowd are pissing me off because they've set in motion a chain of events that will stifle the potentially fabulous ability to transfer what you create on your computer into the real world.
The man behind it harps on about liberty being his motivation for doing it.
Liberty has to be tempered with responsibility, otherwise you just have anarchy. Using new technology to build a gun doesn't make you a champion for freedom, it makes you an attention seeking moron who gives the powers-that-be REASON to restrict it. They will now do everything the can to prevent the proliferation of the technology. They
