I first learned how to build a house of playing cards in an adolescent psychiatric unit in suburban Chicago. A roommate taught me a trick, a mindset really, to have while placing the cards themselves— that a house of cards is always stacked against itself to stand. My trial-and-error attempts led to a lengthy row of playing cards

I lost myself.
I thought I had control
- I thought I knew what I was doing.
I lost my soul
-because of you
Puked it down,
and flushed it down the toilet.
Dear perfect body,
you wouldn't obey!
Now I've given up on you
and I'm trying to forget about "us"
Dear perfect body,
You will never be mine.
I want you, I need you
but I just can't have you.
- You are a lie that I wanted to believe in.
Dear body, forgive me for the damage I have done.
I love you.
The GameThe Game4 years ago in General Fiction More Like This
They had it all wrong--his Mum, and his Dad, and all the other schoolchildren watching from behind the hedgerows or the top of the monkey bars, hooting and jeering and tossing bits of bark and gravel to distract him. They all thought that the only reason why he played the game was because he fancied her.
That wasn't it at all. Or, well, perhaps it was partially true, but confused pre-pubescent infatuation wasn't enough on its own to make him don her father's old blue dress shirt (which she had cut haphazard holes in with her sharp little craft scissors) and necktie and filch his own father's screwdriver from the tool kit and use up an entire pack of blue markers coloring a cardboard box to her satisfaction. The real reason was much simpler: She was sad, and she was angry, and she didn't care what anyone thought of her. He hadn't been able to understand why a person as beautiful and witty and confident as Amelia could be unhappy. It was wrong, and it was fascinating, and it had b

The kiss before they invaded the fire nation.
She had entirely forgotten about it.
Her first kiss.
With her best friend, who was also like a little brother to her.
The feeling in her stomach grew worse.
Is this what people are talking about when they say you get 'butterflies in your belly'? She had always imagined it totally different, more like happiness and joy instead of guilt and sickness.
Was it wrong to kiss him? Does he have a crush on me? Am I having a crush on him? Am I raising his hopes for something more than friendship?
So many questions and no answers.
Everyone was tugging into their dinner greedily since Katara entirely forgot to fix lunch for them. The mood was lightly and happy and Katara let herself get swept with the mood, trying to forget her worries.
She noticed Zuko looking at her sometimes during the meal in what looked like agony. She got annoyed and gave him a dirty look so he would look away.
If she only knew Zuko could feel her pain himself because

Won't you tell me
This thing I've come to be?
The monster that you see
Is it a part of me?
I'm breaking down and shaking 'round in
This world so helplessly
But you just laugh and grin
Completely blind within
There's no point now, broken anyway
I try to stop my breath
Even knowing the truth won't unravel
Me until my death
So breakable, unbreakable
I'm shaking but, unshakable
The real you I've found at last
I'm standing alone in this world that keeps on changing
But hiding away, my true self is fading!
I hope you give up
There's nothing left to see...
No, don't look at me
I'm standing in this world that someone imagined
I never want to hurt you, so until the end
I'm begging you, please, just to remember me...
As clear as I used to be
The loneliness that wraps around keeps deepening until I drown
Fond memories we used to share pierce me 'til I no longer care
I cannot run, I cannot hide, I cannot think, I cannot find
I cannot move, I cannot leave you!

Day 2 – Zutara Month
They waded through the water, slowly making their way through a cave she had found a few days before and was "so excited" to show him. He couldn't stop looking at the arch of her back and how smooth her skin was, even as the light from the sun dimmed the further in the cave they went.
The light disappeared. Zuko looked back at the entrance of the cave, as if he was scared of losing it. He wasn't though; it just came as a natural reaction. He faced forward once more, and couldn't see anything. The only indication of Katara's presence was the small lapping sounds from her movement in the water.
They walked on in comfortable quiet. Zuko followed the sound of Katara humming an impromptu tune, the only thing keeping him from running into a wall. It was also something that kept him in a sort of trance of just her. It was enticing and dizzying, the sound of her voice. He was caught in the sound that seemed to resonate through the entire world at the

Do you remember?
The fall season had finally settled down, but a constant warm breeze kept playing with the womans hair as she walked down the silent path filled with dead but colourful leaves. On each side of her, rows of tombstones were stoically reflecting the last sunrays of the day.
Step by step, the woman went further in the territory of the dead until she reached the end of the path. However, the purpose of her visit was still feet away. She had to cross more rows of tombstones which were beginning to be less organized, the stones being scattered around, breaking the symmetry of the previous ones.
The woman continued to walk on the cold grass, her feet barely making any sound, excepting the seldom crisping of the dead leaves. She walked forward until she reached a solitary tombstone. It was small, barely as glorious as the rest of the symbolic stones of the deceased, but it was clean and still polished, revealing its recentness. It also had a beautiful golden coloration be

It was the beginning of a humble day, the sun was barely above the horizon but the birds were out chirping an unnamed melody. She was laying in bed almost anxiously so, her body jeering about in an effort to awaken her from a deep sleep of just a few hours ago. Brown eyes slowly peered open, pupils racing about as her lashes fluttered in glee, the room was still very much dim but she found that she was 'that type of person', an early bird.
Shifting her head to the right she saw the night stand, a simple little thing that was adorned with a few of her house warming gifts, ones that she remembered giving to Chris, next to them a small green shaded lamp and to it's immediate right an alarm clock; the blaring neon blue digital numbers revealed to her that it was a quarter till six.
The young African woman slowly slid up from her lying position, stretching to awaken her muscles in an amazingly impressive display o
An Unrequited Love LetterI have been thinking of you today, my love. It was an icy morning and as I lay in my bed I thought of you in yours. I could picture it so clearly. You were pale and even smaller than when I saw you last. There was not a wrinkle on your skin. I think your sleep is taking away the years we gained together and returning you to your childhood. Your hair was longer. Someone had plaited it and it hung like Rapunzel's over the rim of the bed, awaiting some tiny chivalrous knight to shimmy up it. I wondered who had plaited that bronze mass and envied their fingers. An Unrequited Love Letter6 years ago in Short Stories More Like This

Jameson was quite the jock. Quarterback in his school's football team, working out all day and basically getting all the hot girls. But he did not care about the girls, or women in general, at all. He had his fun with them and dumped them again. But because of his looks, girls did not listen to the advice of others and still ran with him. He liked it that way, being popular and good looking.
When a new girl came to his school though, everything changed pretty soon. Like any other girl, she wanted him. Although not being a real 10 or even 9, she was still cute and Jameson liked her...in his own way. They got to know each other and a few days and a night of drinking later, they had sex. Next morning, Jameson was already getting dressed and planned to leave, when the new girl woke up. For me I was lucky, the infection has not reached my hometown yet and has given me time to prepare for the worst. He agreed and moved into my apartment with some supplies. He lives by the Airport down south from me. He never stops complaining to me how much he misses the buildings, free running the rooftops with his friends known as a Concrete Jungle Runners. Leo took free running to the extreme by duck taping his trouser legs and his hooded sweatshirt arms. Leo just told me it stops his clothes flapping and catching onto things when he runs along. Scorpius stepped back quickly, but Draco was already forcing his hand back to his side, confident that he had sufficiently frightened his son into submission, at least for the moment. Besides, it wouldn't do to go and hit the boy in the midst of hundreds of witnesses.

Rajan Arens sighed and adjusted the strap on his camera yet again. No matter how the young zoologist twisted it the clunky device remained an annoyance whether it hung heavily from his next or encumbered his hands. The whir and buzz of the night time forest was a constant backdrop to his vigil as Rajan fiddled with his gear. The distant screech of a puma hung in the air and made him look up thoughtfully.
"Puma, P.c. pearsoni maybe or P.c. acrocodia, definitely in a hungry mood whatever it's subspecies. Some poor tapir or llama is going to have a bad night." Rajan murmured to himself before glancing through the eyepiece of his night vision scope. The motion was mostly redundant for the stars and the moon were providing so much illumination that the lofty Andes valley in which Rajan was making his vigil was laid out clearly enough. If his comparatively weak eyes could see well in this light then for Rajan's quarry it might as well be as clear as day. The young ma
