Racing through the undergrowth the boy turned to check the distance of his pursuers. A crash and a crackle covered the air in a layer of twigs and leaves as he tripped through the brush and stepped out backwards into thin air.
I screamed; flailing wildly in the air, trying to grasp something, anything, that might pull me to safety. It was then that I saw red. Such a deep red, coming closer, faster and faster. I felt arms around my waist, pulling my hips forward. A face that I would recognise forever, even though eternity was already speeding up towards me.
The boy turned towards me, his clouded blue eyes meeting my panicked features. As he fell from sight I sped up, in order to reach him before the others. But then he was dying, flying down to his deathbed in the earthbound grave below. I gave no second to consider, every moment I wasted would fall against me. My feet skidded against the mud as I dived down towards the only person I ever cared about.
