Women ArtistsThe other day, I attempted to put together a huge list of some professional and semi-pro women artists over on my tumblr, because it seems like too often women get overlooked when it comes to being honored and recognized. This year, I was incredibly honored to be nominated for a Hugo award in the Best Professional Artist category, but I was a little shocked to find out there hadn’t been another woman nominated in that category since Rowena Morrill in 1986. That’s more than a little ridiculous, considering there are so many women artists out there who are all amazing, who offer unique points of view and design solutions, and who need more visibility and recognition. While putting this list together, I was really excited to find tons of new artists I'd never heard of before.Women Artists1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Daz Studio 4 Map Transfer Mini TutorialThe process is fairly simple. You load the desired texture on to Genesis in Daz Studio 4 (in which ever form, V5, M5 etc) Then under the 'Surfaces' Tab, select the icon in the top left corner of the window. Scroll down to Map Transfer. On the top left of the new window where it says 'Template' right click in the box area. Click 'New Template'. On the right side of the window is a list of the surfaces your current 3d model has. Daz have been very helpful here as they have numbered the relevant parts of the map that belong together. So it is then a process of Shift+Left Click each map region in turn. Once you have the whole group selected left click and drag them over to the Template1 that you created. Then change the 'Target UV Map to M4. You will need to have the Template1 selected to alter the 'Template Options' in the lower part of the window. I would advise a quality of 10, and dimensions of 4096. Then select an output directory. Art BooksAlvaroArte asked me if I could suggest some books on realistic drawing and concept art which was timely as I've been thinking about writing a post about it. So, in no particular order here are some books I recommend.Art Books2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Keys to Drawing (Dodson) - A lot of my early drawing lessons a knowledge was based in this book. Great exercises.
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (Edwards) - A cornerstone art book, it (re)teaches you how to really observe your subject with various exercises.
Imagination Station (Kistler) - While likely not applicable to you guys, it's a wonderful art book for little kids who find it fun and teaches good art principles.
Understanding Light and Color:
Alla Prima (Schmid) - This is not a how-to painting book but delves into how to think and understand light, color, edges, etc. My painting bible.
Imaginative Realism (Gurney) - This author of Dinotopia does a good job addressing how to approach realistically painting subjects that do

DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?I wanted to share this post I've seen on Tumblr. As a professionnal artist, I already know that I underprice my commissions. When you are a freelance, a drawing is generally 500€ to 1000€ when you're a beginner. On DA, I generally sell them at 30/50€. What to think about the new commission system, knowing that I'm already leaving my commissions for a low price?DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
You can easily understand: why do you open commissions then?
Well,I love drawing for other people, and most of commissionners don't even know the real price of a drawing (now you know!). But when I open commissions, this is because I've got the time, because I love to share with commissionners, to know their universe, OCs...and because it helps me to buy new fabric for reenactments too, for sure. But... Well... Shame on you DA! O_o
How can you sell a service for only 0.2/0.4$, knowing that DA takes 20% too?! O_o
It may be a good news for commissionners, but DA, you're killing the artists by making people think that a drawing cos

My Two cents on Portfolio ReviewsYou know, I see quite a bit of portfolio on a regular basis, and even more so when I go to comic con and CTN.My Two cents on Portfolio Reviews2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time around was the same thing, I saw quite a few portfolios. Some good ones and some that miss the mark.
There were a few in particular that caught my eye.. a few extremely good ones, and a few that just didn't work, and I wanted to try and share my opinions about portfolios in general.
This is just my point of view, based on MY experience and definitely not a definitely law, rule, or "must do". Just what I noticed in many student's and young professional's portfolios.
The first thing that strikes me is how similar portfolios can be from one student to another..I can almost always tell when one student is from Art Center, San Jose State, Otis, Sheridan or any other major school. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Mainly a bad thing though
Just a few personal thoughts on portfolios since I just came back from comic con and saw a ton over there.
Your portfolio should be a r

Heya everyone I'm back! I only have one assignment due this week so yeah-- Anyway IT'S GREAT TO BE BACK TIME TO GET INTO SOME ACTION BECAUSE THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING/S YOU GUYS ARE MISSING OUT ON.
Also this is a very important announcement regarding the downloading of mp3s. Unfortunately nicomimi does not work anymore, and the only way we can download things the easy way is to use flvto to extract the mp3 out of the youtube videos I'm giving you guys.
I'm personally using FreeWare, but it's only for people who have a NND account.
But please if you're getting a NND account for this reason (downloading mp3s) please use NND English if you want to comment on the videos in English. NND English exists for a reason and it won't be respectful to comment on NND Japan because you're commenting in English amongst Japanese commenters. So again, please please PLEASE use NND English if you want to comment in English.

Copic Markers and Pony colorsI get a LOT of questions regarding what colors I use where when it comes to the ponies, and I keep saying I'm gonna make a little guide. Well, let's give it a shot.Copic Markers and Pony colors1 year ago in Personal More Like This
For the majority of my covers, I use Copic markers to color. Copics are light-fast, alcohol markers... not unlike a classic school marker, but higher quality. I prefer Copic over other brands primarily for a few reasons: Variable tips (markers, fine, brush, etc), better blending, and they can be refilled! This is the BIG selling point to me... this means you can buy the marker once, and continue to refill. It also means you can custom blend colors should you desire. Copics also guarantee that if you buy Y00 yellow, and then buy another down the line, the colors will match. I've bought the same marker color from other brands and had them not match. I will use other brands here and there for very specific colors or effects, but Copic is 99% of my marker work.
So... when I do a cover or whatever, I do basic ink lines first wit
Screentone or are you ...?Screentone or are you ...?5 years ago in Personal More Like This
" Screentone is a technique for applying textures and shades to drawings, used as an alternative to hatching. In the conventional process, patterns are transferred
to paper from preprinted sheets, but the technique is also simulated in computer graphics. It is also known by the common brand names Zip-A-Tone (1937, now defunct),
Chart-Pak (1949), and Letratone (1966, from Letraset).
A traditional screentone sheet consists of a flexible transparent backing, the printed texture, and a wax adhesive layer. The sheet is applied to the paper, adhesive down,
and rubbed with a stylus on the backing side. The backing is then peeled off, leaving the ink adhered to the paper where pressure was applied.A screentone saves an artist's
time by allowing quick application of textures to line art where a hand-shaded area would not be reproduced in a timely or acceptable manner. Much like halftone, the size
and spacing of black dots, lines, or hatches determine how light or dark an area will appear.
Unexpected Guest contestI am a little annoyed with myself for dithering around and forgetting to make this official, but better late than never I guess!Unexpected Guest contest1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The idea that I have for this contest is, as the name suggests, and as I have mentioned in previous journal entries is the inclusion of an unexpected figure in a 'normal render'. I think, maybe, I left the previous contest a little too open and people were not sure what was expected. This time I am wondering if I should be more specific or could I leave it more open? I know what I want, but I also do want to stifle anyone's imagination.
What I'd like is easy to describe IF you have read all the same books as me! For example if you have read some of the Urban Fae themed books by Charles de Lint you will probably have a very good idea of what I mean and I would not have to say too much. If not then any allusion I make will fall on deaf ears and just confuse!
In essence I want a 'normal render' - any by normal I mean normal to you,

Respect YourselfMy friend shared this video to warn other artists about how she was taken advantage of, and I believe this is a very important message that every artist should hear.Respect Yourself2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've lost count of how many times someone, be it a big corporation or an individual, have asked me to illustrate for them for free. It will always go something like this "You draw this for us, and we will include your name in the credits. That's good publicity for you!" as if such a pathetic offer holds any merit.
There was one specific case where a guy wanted to use my drawing as a book cover but didn't want to pay. He said he might print up to 50,000 books, so that's like an amazing offer of 50,000 views for me right? Wrong. 50,000 is nothing. We live in the information revolution. Don't forget we have places like Deviantart, tumblr, and all those social networking sites. Sharing art, like sharing any information, has never been easier. You don't have to degrade yourself for some disrespectful publisher to get you art se
Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.Tutorials and techniques4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.
Let's get it started!Dear friends!Let's get it started!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So I've got lots of feedbacks on my e-mail aftermy latest journal entry. Thanks for all that. And it's already decided that this blog is definitely going to exist.
What you will find there:
- copics and related tools reviews
- markers and mixed techniques
- materials research
- color theory
What you will NOT find there:
- tutorials about how to draw random fruits realistically, babies and flowers for cards
- critiques on your works
Original works and tutorials only.
Let's make it clear from the start: I'm not trying to make one of those blogs made for gathering more watchers and followers. I'm going to solve difficult art problems, looks for new and interesting technics and share them with all who's interested in it.
I will take requests, but it doesn't mean that I'm going to follow them. I will interprete them into somethi
