**** Check out my new film everybody! Better than the last! ****

A play on the traditional folktales of baby-stealing canines, this film is a short story of theft and punishment, appropriately named “The Consequence”.

This piece is an experimental combination of live animation and paper cutouts. All puppets, sets, and effects were made by hand. I had a really fun time on this one. I had no idea how well my camera would record in a low light situation, so a lot of my time was spent crossing my fingers and hoping everything would turn out ok. Had I known the camera would work so nicely (and not blur things, as I expected it to) I probably would have invested more time in the scenery and puppets to add even more detail to them. They were created simply with the impression that small details wouldn’t be visible through the screen. With that one criticism, I’m very happy with this as my first attempt at planning, filming, editing, and producing an actual film.

This film was included in my portfolio to apply for Experimental Animation at CalArts (and I got in). Seeing how much of a success this turned out to be on such an extremely low budget, I’m looking forward to the films that come after this one that I have more time to invest in. Everyone, cross your fingers for me! I have big plans.

Music by Mikey Kirkpatrick (aka Bird Radio). Much thanks to him for allowing me to use his music for my film. It’s quite beautiful, isn’t it? You can find his website here: [link] Give him a listen. You may be hooked.

Edit:
Oh my gosh you guys! I thought it was settling down at 15,000 views. The 24 hour front-page bump was over, and now this! A Daily Deviation! Thank you for everyone who recommended it! It's nice to see that people like my work! I can't wait to release my future films!

today i received this note in my inbox from the help desk:

"We have received some Help Desk inquiries from some of your watchers who are experiencing issues with not receiving your notifications concerning your deviations. This is a known issue that we have been working on and need your help in order to eliminate this issue. I have been asked by deviousTechnology to contact you and ask that you please submit 2-3 deviations (no scraps). They will be monitoring the submissions to figure out where the failure is occurring."

so, i figured it was high time to upload my animation!

this was my graduation project for my 4 year animation course at the utrecht school of the arts. it's a long commercial for a fictional company that i came up with, called Trichrome. i made it in TVpaint and Adobe After Effects.

i used the annotations to put in concept art for certain scenes, although one of them ("what is this") was just a test to see what annotations actually were. sadly i can't delete it haha!

"Disconnect" (2011) is an animated film I created/directed, exploring themes of depression and loneliness. The protagonist - Malcolm - struggles with his inability to connect with the world and the people around him.

This was my graduation film for Emily Carr and took about 8 months to complete. To date it's the largest project I've worked on. I feel I could have done better, but I'm still very proud I what I managed to accomplish.

Special Thanks to my family and friends for putting up with me during the process.

Resubmitting my first film in the Film section. Unfortunately, I can't edit the original deviation, so I'm gonna have to keep it in the archives (you can access it here: [link] ). This version has much better quality, though. Yay!

Everything was hand drawn on paper, then scanned in Toon Boom Opus for the colouring. Backgrounds were coloured with Adobe Photoshop.

I hope you like!

Statistics:
27 scenes
850+ drawings
750+ hours of hard work

Becoming Human is an unusual tale of love and sacrifice - where the common understanding of what is human behaviour and what is a robot behaviour is twisted, and the measures we take and defend to be justifiable suddenly collapse into a discomforting situation when the roles are swapped - in a world on the brink of change.

Credits to Vernon Ong for various resources and Ying Jie for animating many scenes, my other group members. And also for clearing up much of the paperwork to free up time for me to focus on this. Special thanks to Ernest Thio for the wonderful music and sound effects in which he composed/composited, and his patience for when working with me!

Tools: 3Ds Max, Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.
This animation was created and completed during a Diploma course at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
