Inspirational Artisan Crafts #9The AC round up for this weekish... artisan crafts that I found inspiring while browsing through the galleries, or were suggested to me.Inspirational Artisan Crafts #93 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The November Artisan Craft theme challenge is over, but we have a new one up, Winter Days!
Send me DD suggestions from the Artisan Craft gallery. I may take a day or two to get back to you, so please don't be offended. On a side note please, please, PLEASE, when you send a DD suggestion, send it to one moderator! We get really confused if you send us all the same thing
If you have any Artisan Craft related contests or clubs you would like to promote, (heck, anything Artisan Craft related!) note them to me and I'll post them in my journal and the next News letter.
I am also looking for any suggestions on how to make the Artisan Craft community a better place. Speak up, this is your community, I'm here to listen!

5 Suggestions to Make Horror ScarySince we're coming up on Halloween (sort of) and I'm increasingly irritable at the lack of horror films to see, here five ways I think the genre in film, television and video games could be improved.5 Suggestions to Make Horror Scary2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm actually a fan of horror, but specifically physiological dread rather then gore which is increasingly becoming the minority of horror in general. I'm hoping there are those like me, sick of the splatter and wanting to see horror once more actually SCARE people again!
1: No Cheap Music Stings
This is one that's really starting to get to me. EVERY SINGLE instance of suspense has to be broken up with a loud discordant blast of music and sound. Sure it's startling but since the music sting itself doesn't exist inside the universe of the film/show/game it comes across as artificial with only a little bit of retrospect. To me music stings make me jump but they don't actually scare me, any more then getting a static electrical zap is terrifying. Worse a surprising lot of these stings oc

I've been having an absolutely terrible past couple weeks. I've lost all interest in absolutely everything, I've cried every night. I have so much trouble falling asleep, but once I do, I sleep until 5 pm.
I love all of you, and I want to help all of you through your problems. But lately, it's like i don't have time for my own problems. And it feels like no one else has time for me, either.
I woke up this morning, took a shower, and just stood there sobbing until the water got cold. When i got out, I was shaking and could barely stand up... I honestly have no idea what's wrong with me.
Basically, I wanted to tell you guys what's going on, just so i don't seem weird, and so i don't seem like i'm just abandoning you guys.
Anyway, stay strong, all of you... never give up. Okay?
Just 'cause I'm not very strong, doesn't mean you guys aren't.
Love you all <3
I'm back! :DTwo weeks ago, I had my last final exam and I'm done now, yay! And I'm also really satisfied with my results, I did much better than I expected, so all of the hard studying actually paid off! XDI'm back! :D3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since last week I've started working 8/5 in a hospital pharmacy, so far I like it but I'm also veeeery tired when I come home in the evenings. But I'm free at the weekends and have some time to draw now! :'D So, I'm gonna post new stuff soon!
Also a big thank you to everybody who left me comments and/or faves on my stuff in the meantime, it's very appreciated! I read all of them and they cheered me up during exam-time! <3
Cartoon Network pulls DC Nation and all DC shows"Roughly 10 hours before it was supposed to air, DC Nation and it's programmingCartoon Network pulls DC Nation and all DC shows2 years ago in Personal More Like This
(with Green Lantern the Animated Series, Young Justice, and the Amethyst Princess
of Gemworld and Thunder and Lightning shorts) set to air, it was abruptly pulled
from network schedules. Neither DC nor Cartoon Network has made any announcements
of why it occurred, and DC Nation has summarily been pulled from the entire month
of October. Attempts made to contact either entity have been met with silence.
Not even the producers of the shows were told beforehand, with most learning later
on from distraught fans, who were unable to become 'traught'."

Solutions to Popular ClichesWe all know they exist, and they usually exist for a reason: to serve as the lynchpin of a plot that is either too lazy or the writer too unversed in films and stories to realize how stock they've made their production without intending to. Stereotypical plot turns, unrealistic but procedural character reactions, suspension of logic for the sake of following in well worn footsteps: none of this necessarily means the final product won't be entertaining, don't get me wrong. But what can't be denied is that cliches cheapen a product and make story lines feel less organic and more contrived.Solutions to Popular Cliches1 year ago in Personal More Like This
However in addition to pointing out a few of these classics and trying briefly to explain why they might be used, I'd also like to provide my suggestions for how to get around these road bumps in plot structure and accomplish what these placeholders are meant to, but perhaps accomplish it in a much more interesting way in service to the story, not detrimental to it.
Plot and story are not the same thin

Normal Heroes Much Needed'...he's more unique then the other guys.'Normal Heroes Much Needed3 years ago in Personal More Like This
From the theme song to Danny Phantom.
I might have ranted about this to begin with but it bears further consideration.
Exactly where did our 'normal' heroes go?
Consider that almost the sum total of every popular hero is elevated above an ineffectual rabble thanks to either alien lineage, genetic tampering, genius level IQ and Olympian training, or technological advantage. Iron Man? He wouldn't be a hero without his suit. Jason Bourne? The term 'hero' is shaky, but the point is made that he'd be nothing without his ultra-super-secret training. Thor? He's a magical alien. Spiderman? The transformation isn't so much from zero to hero it's from ordinary, awkward, useless human to significant super hero. Even Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter makes Honest Abe dance around like a martial artist and chop trees in half with a single blow because of secret vampire knowledge.
He can't just be a regular guy because regular guys, as the prevailing message g

Character: What You Are in the DarkAnother of my musings on storytelling, characters and such inbound.Character: What You Are in the Dark2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am less then a passionate devotee of a lot of modern day storytelling mediums/stories in general. The reason being I'm recently coming to understand is that there's very rarely a combination of good elements in one production. It tends to be 60/40 in terms of character development, atmosphere, plot, writing, metaphorical depth...etc.
Consider all the times you may have seen a fairly recent film and come away thinking 'Well, the action was great but the characters were boring' or 'It was really deep and meaningful...I think, but nothing really happened' or 'There was lots of character development, it's too bad the plot was so simple and dull'. It seems like the filmmakers/writers/game designers poured their hearts and souls into exactly one aspect of a production, leaving the others undernourished.
Now I realize that maybe some elements don't bother you as much as they do me. I get a massive kick out of overanalyzing
Stop Dumbing Down Movie Trailers!A lot of people seem to believe that all Americans want to see in movies is violence, explosions, and sex. Seeing as a lot of Americans believe that's all Americans want to see you can't really blame other countries (or other Americans) on accepting this stereotype as without exception.Stop Dumbing Down Movie Trailers!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But here's the thing...it's not true.
Americans that I know of, and this is supported by box office numbers, are looking for more.
Sure practically everyone across genders and nationalities enjoys a little high tension conflict be it verbal or physical because we like the escapism of romantic adventure and danger.
But if all we're looking for is blood, guts, and guns...why are movies doing so poorly?
Even financially successful movies are pulling in paltry sums compared to the juggernauts of yesteryear. The interest in cinema hasn't died but it's flickering, especially in America, no matter how many pretty actors are running around or how many bullets are flying.
Which leads me to the poster boy of this
Bring Back (Some) 80s/90s!The 80s and early 90s seem to have be for me like ancient Greece to the Romans:Bring Back (Some) 80s/90s!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
a mystic historical time perhaps that never existed but when art, culture, and life was better, more real and meaningful for all its faults.
I keep hearing people rag on these times, especially it's entertainment and I'm not blind. A lot of the 80s and 90s like any other time period was forgettable and trite nonsense made for a quick buck. But here's the thing to me.
Our modern nonsense is so very BORING.
In the 80s and early 90s the genre movies were things like Arena (man fights aliens in gladiatorial combat) Grimm (troll seeks to resurrect army with ancient ritual) The Lost Platoon (vampires from every period of American warfare team up), Steel Justice (a cop in the future avenges his kid's death with a time traveler and a fifty foot robotic dinosaur) and Abraxas (superior beings from the future, good and bad, struggle for the life of a child who knows The Anti-Life equation).
Nowadays our b-movies are A
My Favorite Horror...Things!In no particular order and for Halloween I present a list of random stuff I consider the best that horror has to offer! Enjoy...if you dareMy Favorite Horror...Things!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1: On the Brighton Road by Richard Middleton
It's a few scant pages in length, one of the few creations of an author with a tragically short career. This in my opinion is the best ghost story ever written. With one of the most vivid and gothic atmospheres in fiction, a simple but effective composition, and a memorable twist which not only shocks but puts all the rest of the journey proceeding into a spine-tingling new prospective as the best revelations do.
This is one to read if you want a quick spook-story that you won't want to sleep soon after. The freezing, tattered tramp and the strange boy with staring, fearful eyes will haunt you forever.
2: Zork Nemesis
This is a game which does everything you're not supposed to do with an established franchise, and because of it is still regarded by many as a classic masterwork. I pe

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
Sort of screams out 'We came up with the title first' doesn't it?
YES. This movie hasn't been released and good movies can come from bad trailers but my problems with this particular attempt at a 'dark' adaptation are so indicative of my difficulties with Hollywood's fumbling efforts to capture some kind of gothic/modern aesthetic that this trailer is practically a living example of everything these guys consistently get wrong.
Am I annoyed by the concept alone? Not really. Adapting a classic and iconic story in a new way is a great way to tackle universal themes without the needless complexity of backstory and exposition. Nolan's Batman trilogy (you knew I'd mention it) displayed how a comic book character can be used as a springboard for moral, political, character based stories.
Am I annoyed that it's an action movie? Not really either. I thought Expendables was a serviceabl

Meeting The Enemy, But Never UsEver notice (unless it's just me...again) that the media loves to play with the concept of our identifying with an enemy...but never follows through?Meeting The Enemy, But Never Us2 years ago in Personal More Like This
For the most part the enemy in all forms of entertainment is an out and out 'other', a wild animal, a strangely shaped alien menace or a shambling zombie or an inscrutable malevolent being. These are easy to align against because it's human nature to be mistrustful of things that don't fall into our purview of self image. What we don't identify with we do one of two things to in general: worship or fight.
The vast majority of 'foes' in media from video games to shows to films are a detached society or a dissimilar race to mankind posing a threat, presumably because if the enemy is without qualm and outside of our understanding we can cheer with greater ease of mind when they are slaughtered wholesale in heroic battle.
But wait you say! There's human foes to be had too: thieves and corrupt businessmen and politicians, crazed soldiers, raci

How to be a Great ArtistPeople write me all the time on how to be a great artist and I figured that I would finally answer instead of delaying it constantly. So here are some tips on how to improve. How to be a Great Artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
These are legit. They helped me so they will help you as well.
1. Steal People's Work
I'm pretty sure you have a lot of favorite artists that are popular as well. Download their artwork and upload in your account. And because the majority of the internet is stupid, say that it's yours. Who's gonna know? The chances of you getting caught is very slim. But on the chances that you do get caught, deny that you stole it. Create an army and tell your minions to give that person hate spam. And don't forget to write in your journal that everything you post is from you. This will definitely increase your popularity.
2. Find a Style and Stick to It
Who cares about knowledge and construction and improvement? No one does. All you need to succeed is finding a new style and using it forever. Just make up one and n
5 Art Selling TipsWhile I used to see "art sales" simply as bonus money coming in on the side, over the past few years it's become enough of an asset that it justifies an art dealer, record keeping, insurance, and taxes at the end of each year. It's currently 25% of my total income, and that has a lot of impact over my work. And just like storytelling, design and page flow--abstract principles that keep my career afloat daily--art sales also deserve to be studied, theorized, and understood.5 Art Selling Tips2 years ago in Personal More Like This
These are guidelines, not rules. And while most of them usually work for me, they might not all work for you, so keep in mind that my market might be different than yours. Because not only do we not draw the same, we probably have different sorts of buyers.
1. Don't stay on a book for too long
I find that doing mini series of 4-12 issues is optimal for selling art. If you spend a year doing one-shots or 2-3 issue minis, you'll be hard for buyers to keep track of because it's too infrequent. And it's hard to make an i

Halloween fast approaches…
…and with it, the latest re–make, this time an “origins” story, of the “Dracula” legend (“Dracula Untold”, October). For some magical or medical reason Dracula so stimulates and fascinates our psyches that it has survived and thrived since publication in 1897. Rather than present a synopsis of the original novel’s narrative for the few of you that haven’t read it or seen at least one of its movie versions, what is offered here is a rough charting of the evolution of this story.
