Manip Challenges #003I wanted to do this last weekend, but ended up doing everything but this But here they finally are: our third edition of the Manip Challenges! I hope there will be as much participation as last time (though I have to admit, reaching over 30 entries in the middle of the vacation period might be a bit optimistic - I suppose you've been spoiling me so far ) In any case, it's about having a challenge and not about breaking any participation records, so let's just get it on I can't wait to see all your gorgeous entries!Manip Challenges #0033 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Please don't forget to credit and notify all resource providers you use stock of - including the challenge stock!
You are given 8 stock images (see below) of which you have to use at least TWO in a way that we don't have to go hunting for them with a looking glass. You can use additional stock, but I ask you not to use premades - this is a challenge for your skills, not for someone else's. Your entry has to be a p

Congratulations to me - now it's 10 years ago that I joined DeviantArt. That is a long time. I was a newbie when I started here and I have learned so much since then!!! I wouldn't be were I am if it hadn't been for DA and all the friends and fellow artists over all the years. A lot of things happened, many things have changed. Are you kidding me???Are you effing kidding me?? Not to say my work is the most amazing stuff out there but my works have been denied access from several groups as submitting my works! Now I have seen some pretty basic shit there soo from now on I will stick with my two regular groups unless invited to add a piece to a group! EFF THAT CRAPAre you kidding me???3 years ago in Personal More Like This
As you can see I have gone back to the basics of the journal skin. It is to show my great disappointing feelings here at DA recently.
My first heartache is this I have seen so very many artists on here flourish and come into their own, adapt their own styles, learn amazing techniques, keep on coming up with new and creative pieces, And so many of them go unnoticed, without acolytes and with a mild fan base.
Mean time I have seen people taken basic stock add a layer of texture or two over it and filter the hell out of it and it goes with the highest praise, where is the ethics in this? Claiming a piece is painted when it is clearly not. it is just extreme
Accepting Resumes/Portfolios for CryamoreHey kids!Accepting Resumes/Portfolios for Cryamore3 years ago in Personal More Like This
A lot of people have expressed working with us on Cryamore (even sent resumes for stuff we didn't even announce), and though we don't want to hire a BIG team to get the game done (we feel that keeping the team as small as possible will make it easy for us to keep everything in check), we by ourselves can pretty much do it. But having backup assistance prepared will always help.
With that in mind, we WILL most likely be pulling on a small amount of freelance help for the game. (A good 3-5 people at most.) Rather than waiting for that time to come when we're into development and sending the message out that we need help at that time, we're going to start accepting resumes now so we can contact you if we feel you will mesh well with the development of Cryamore.
So these are the kind of people we are looking at:
Spriters+Clean-Up Animators+Pixel Artists. If you can do pixel art by itself (icons/items), let us know. If you can clean-up pixeled sprit

The Creative Juggernaut that is BenHeine
Undoubtedly one of the most prolific, innovative, and exciting artists
exhibiting their work on deviantART has to be the amazing BenHeine.
In terms of sheer creativity and the true spirit of art as human expression that knows no bounds,
he is currently with few peers. His unique visual creations have been featured in newspapers, magazines
and other publications worldwide and over the last few years his works have begun to populate art galleries
and museums from Brussels and London to Turkey, Romania and South Korea.

The voice acting casting is over, thank You!Hello everybody! The voice acting casting is over, thank You!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just few days ago I announced the voice acting casting and now, when it's over, I must say, I'M OVERWHELMED with the amount of help and submissions to the animation project! ;A; Overall, I've got over 250 submissions that I'm still checking out (so I'm sorry If I my replies are a little delayed..But I'm just a person, not a company X'D). Regarding to the fact that I've got so many submissions and the choice of the actors is constantly getting harder for me (some of them were so great I've been nearly spasming due to the excitement), I've decided that I'll announce the cast on Monday 21th Thank You once again for all Your concern and interest in the casting and project overall, I promise to submit more works in progress from the project as soon as we have something new
Here is the storyboard for the animation: *links to next parts are in artists description

Thank you, Mr PresidentSome people complain about Obama because he hasn't fixed the economy.Thank you, Mr President4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Some people complain about him because he hasn't kept every single one of his election pledges.
People dislike the man for a variety of reasons.
I think he's amazing.
Because he is pro-Equal Rights.
This journal is for nothing more than to say how happy I am that, finally, a president of the United States has boldly stepped forward and declared his support for same-sex marriages. He could have easily avoided this issue until after the election race was over, but he made the decision to be up-front and honest in advance. I respect that in a politician so very, very much.
So thank you, Obama. I sincerely hope people listen to you, and learn what it truly means to treat your fellow man as "equal".
My 2 cents about educationON THE SUBJECT OF SCHOOLS, I FELT COMPELLED TO CHIME IN. If you can afford an expensive school then take it if you like but if you can't then obviously don't go to an expensive school. Just like you wouldn't buy a car you couldn't afford. My 2 cents about education2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The best thing about the "good" schools are the students because when you hear a school is great everybody flocks there, including many of the most talented... but notice I said "many" and not "all" the most talented.
"Superstars" can come from city, any shape, any color, ANY AGE. We've seen it many times before.
The best way to cultivate talent is to interact with other talented or potentially talented people. It just makes us all work even harder. I had the great fortune of being in the same school and year with Pixar's James Robertson, Dani Strijleva, Ben Su and John Lee. And these are just a handful of the very talented people from my year. Just by being in the same class, this has influenced me to work harder than ever when I really didn't w
Tip of the Day: Enjoy the processToday, concentrate on enjoying the process of art more than the result, you will become more productive. STYLE RANTIf you ask me the word "style" is misused and underutilized to be of much use to people discussing something as vast and varied as art. Currently the way "style" works, is people will group a bunch of artists based on trivial common ground and then slap a "style" label to it with whatever word that happens nearby. Now when you hear that word, you think of one image in your brain to summarize a bunch of people. Most people think for instanceSTYLE RANT4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Indy style = Black and white autobiographical comics with chicken scratch linework.
When it should actually mean
Indy = Independent = Self made
Anime style = Big eyes, tiny noses, high saturation, cute shit
When it actually means
Anime = Animation in Japanese = Animation from Japan
An actual USEFUL way to define "art style" would be by motivation for instance:
Expressionism was a mod
Tip of the Day: having a missionTo have great success, you must have a good 'mission. What would you do if you could do anything or be given any job you want? Start from there. Don't worry about how hard it might be or how to make money from it yet. Figure out your mission and THEN figure out how to make a living from it.Tip of the Day: having a mission4 years ago in Personal More Like This
The best missions don't come from taking but from wanting to give back. However, achieving goals for yourself can give you the success and ability to give back more.
Sending positive vibes to you all!

The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.1 I've been thinking about how and why we learn to draw for a few years now. I started self-analazing my own drawing and character design thought process when I began writing my first art instruction book, "Creating Characters with Personality". It was harder than I thought to verbalize how I've learned and how I process drawing. This has led me to start looking back at my artistic life and how I learned art. What made me learn the most? What drove me to draw and stick with it? What led to others I knew as a child to stop drawing? I think I'm ready to present some of those thoughts here on DA and hear what you think. So, this is part 1 of three in a series. I'm not sure where this is leading, but step one is my establishing an online art instruction school called Taught ByA PRO (www.taughbyapro.com) that will (in phase one) concentrate on drawing instruction for all forms of media. Here we go:The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.12 years ago in Personal More Like This

I recently started drawing a weekly webcomic strip for Namco-Bandai, Wagan Land. I've been having a blast drawing it! :iconmattmoylan: and myself got some pretty fun ideas prepared for it. I know that a lot of you haven't heard of Wagan as it was a Japanese-only thing before now, but go and check it out; it's a pretty fun little read. If it is read a lot and does well hit-wise, we can keep the series going for a while. It's updated twice a week and you can read it here: Wagan Land on ShiftyLook!
I missed my end-of-the-year completion quota for commissions as I didn't expect Wagan Land to get greenlit right at the end of the year. So now that I'm catching up with my buffe

Look, at the end of the day, this site provides a service. You can choose to pay for it, or you can choose to not pay for it. It works either way. If you really don't like it, not only should you not pay for it, but don't use it. No one is forcing you to.
It seems like a lot of people seem to think that being a member of this site gives them ownership of it. It doesn't. Be grateful it exists. Be happy that it is (now) profitable. For a long time it wasn't. The people who work on it deserve to make some money - they work hard.
If you don't agree with any of this, I think you're lacking in perspective. There's nothing keeping you here if you don't want to be. I think DA does a great job of listening to a vast community and trying to make changes to please it's members. It can't be incredibly dynamic and flexible to accomodate e

Without AirThe trees are old. They're older than the city and older than the desert and they stand tall along the edge of the raging sea like sentinels. The first leaves of spring have started to shroud their wind-blown bones, but still they rattle as air gusts through the high branches. Their roots are gnarled and worn and powerful and they reach far into the earth.Without Air4 years ago in Personal More Like This
There are towns and there are people barely a mile away and always pushing closer, but right here the world is free, less moulded to the blanched soulless sterility of first world living.
The clouds are growing heavy overhead and a drum beat rises from deep in my chest.
I will not drink for I desire a clear mind and clearer eyes.
I have not eaten since I left the desert, nor will I, though the hunger leaves me as gnarled as driftwood. I had grown weak waiting outside your city.
Here there are only the screams of gulls and the crashing, chaotic beauty of the waves under the iron sky. Iron, water and wood. Salt in the air and on my ton
