Got any more tips, or tutorials you can find? Please tell me soon! I might make an article if I get enough tips. Every contribution is appreciated and will be credited
If you want your art to be found through search, it's more important than ever to use the right category and keywords. So my question is, do you have any tips for your fellow deviants on how to pick the right category and keywords?
Please comment and tell me all you know, and I'll make a list here with all of your tips (I will probably summarise them to like a short headline and add a link to your original comment - you will also be credited, of course).
I'm looking for any tips on how to make sure you have the category, and how to pick good keywords, basic or advanced, in general or in specific situations (say, for stock in particular).

Disclaimer: I'm no lawyer, I do not work for deviantArt, I'm merely someone who has been doing photomanips for quite a while and has taken the time to read quite a few articles on the topic. The views expressed hereunder are mine alone. They do not reflect any "official dA opinion" nor are they to be taken as "legal advice". Furthermore, you may live in a country that hasn't signed any of the treaties that govern international copyright law, so you'd have to check with your country's national laws.
I strongly urge you to not only read the journal, but also the comments underneath it as there are a lot more examples of what you can and can't do as well as more links to information being shared by your fellow deviants!
What is Copyright?
I'll paraphrase/quote the wikipedia article on the topic for this:
"Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclus

Rule of Thirds
Thankfully this time, there are no hours upon hours of dry reading to be done because the Rule of Thirds itself can be explained rather easily:
"The Rule of Thirds states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections." (from the wikipedia article)

Monthly Challenge : JuneHello silkworms and mayflies,Monthly Challenge : June1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I've yet to choose a winner for May, but I want to start June's challenge punctually to give everyone enough time. I should have a winner for May announced within a week or so; please be patient as I am moving and need to pack & unpack!
Last month I held a poll so you can all have at least one photo chosen by you guys, and that majority-voted stock is included below. With these given stock photos you can use one of them, a few, all, and combine them however you wish. And you can make however many entry pieces you'd like and in any medium --digital, traditional, even literature (still curious to see how that would happen...)-- as long as I can tell it's clearly based off the photos you were given. Oh, and the entries must be made after the beginning of each month (ie. after my journal announcement for each monthly challenge) and they are due before the end of that month.

of Independent Cinema
Movies featuring the latest in high tech digital effects, eye-popping CGI environments and ear-splitting surround sound, are often described as “pushing the envelope.” But they’re mega-million-dollar productions that are delivered back to the studios by the filmmakers precisely as pre-ordered. Rarely is there danger of disaster, so what envelope has been pushed?
“Envelope-shredder” might be a better designation for Brian Taylor...
Who, usually in collaboration with partner-in-mayhem Mark Neveldine, has given the world such films as Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer, Pathology, and recently Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Speedpaint Tip #3: Custom BrushesMuch of speedpainting is about attempting to create a convincing image, even though (often) the subject matter is entirely invented by the artist. Primarily this is done through the use of convincing lighting, atmosphere, forms, and perspective...but texture also plays a role. This is where custom brushes come in handy.Speedpaint Tip #3: Custom Brushes5 years ago in Personal More Like This
When you're painting a scene in a limited amount of time, you can't waste what time you have detailing every texture in the image. Instead, you can use custom/texture brushes strategically to imply these textures while allowing you to focus on detailing the most important aspects of the image. When the viewer sees your painting, the hope is that the textures will tell them enough about the nature of a surface or of objects that they accept it as "natural" while you call their attention to the intended focal points. Texture itself should generally not be the focus. It should support the rest of the image.
There are two primary ways of grouping texture brushes:

5 Tips to Maintaining and Gaining WatchersFor those who have many watchers, and for those who dont have many, it is hard to know how one retains that interest as well as receive more. This article explores the basics of watchers and how we react to certain situations. Although it does not affect some deviants, and the tips are generally common sense, we hope the article is a worthwhile read and that the majority learn something from reading this.5 Tips to Maintaining and Gaining Watchers5 years ago in Art Features More Like This
1. When uploading deviations, do not bombard your watchers. If you upload only one or two a day, or even one or two a week, you will get more comments as well as more attention. People will have more time to comment and more time in general, whereas if you upload all in one go, they will most likely delete and just comment on a few.
2. Spend time on your artwork. Once youve finished a piece, it doesnt stop there. Youve got to consider the title, which impacts the piece significantly and the artists comment. Is art ever finished? Ask yourself that q
Stop the madness! Usernames.Sometimes I feel like a grumpy old man that starts sentences with "Kids today don't--" (which is usually followed by "Get off my front yard!"). I just read a Journal post by buddy Sean Ellery (pro colorist) that posted about a pet peeve of mine: usernames. (Read his Journal here: http://seane.deviantart.com ) We live an a culture where some people are better known by their username than their given name. I have been bewildered that artists aren't getting their ACTUAL names out there. The only person I think it seems to work for is "artgerm" since he became SO big early on (in the life of DA) and now not as many people know his real name (Something Lau, I believe, off the top my head). BUT, that is the exception to the rule- and I wonder if he would go back in time and change his username to his own. If art directors/ editors can't request you by name, then they don't know how to contact you (usually your website is in your real name, whicStop the madness! My Thoughts on ImprovementI get a lot of questions on how to go about improving your drawing ability. I never really know how to answer them since every artist I've met seems to grow better under different conditions. For example, my friend :icondana-t: has completed over one hundred sketchbooks in the past four years. I've completed four in the same amount of time, but our trends of improvement are (kinda) similar because we learn in different ways.My Thoughts on Improvement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
One of the reasons I never end up making a tutorial is basically because I don't think they work. Plenty of people will disagree with me on this, but that's my honest opinion. There might be a lot of opinions I type out here you'll disagree with, so keep in mind these are just my views. Here are my general thoughts on how to improve.
Stop thinking about style. Style is something you will develop gradually after you've spent years emulating other styles, talking with other artists, observing the world, and pinpointing what looks best to you. Ev

It took me a few years after that to figure out the answer for myself and these options below are but a few. There are surely many more possibilities out there, but here are some ideas to what you can do with your artwork. Be warned all of these options take time to become proficient enough in that you can make a living, but having a focus is the best beginning.
