DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?I wanted to share this post I've seen on Tumblr. As a professionnal artist, I already know that I underprice my commissions. When you are a freelance, a drawing is generally 500€ to 1000€ when you're a beginner. On DA, I generally sell them at 30/50€. What to think about the new commission system, knowing that I'm already leaving my commissions for a low price?DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You can easily understand: why do you open commissions then?
Well,I love drawing for other people, and most of commissionners don't even know the real price of a drawing (now you know!). But when I open commissions, this is because I've got the time, because I love to share with commissionners, to know their universe, OCs...and because it helps me to buy new fabric for reenactments too, for sure. But... Well... Shame on you DA! O_o
How can you sell a service for only 0.2/0.4$, knowing that DA takes 20% too?! O_o
It may be a good news for commissionners, but DA, you're killing the artists by making people think that a drawing cos

Starting with dA CSSBack when CSS was allowed for journals for the first time there had been only a few deviants like ClaireJones, Lilyas or kuschelirmel-stock who provided free skins for everyone. Through the time more and more people enjoyed working on CSS skins and we also got the chance to skin our galleries.Starting with dA CSS3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
These days, and thanks to the great resources about journal and gallery CSS that have been created, it is possible for nearly everyone to code their own skins and/or to share them with others. Still there are many people who struggle with some basic things, which is why we want to focus on some of them here.
Where can you use CSS/HTML
On deviantART you can only use HTML and CSS on your journals, group blogs, your custom gallery folders, as well as your groups' galleries.
When you customize your profile widgets you can't add CSS or HTML like you can for journals/galleries. All you can do is using existing dA code that can be re-us
How to: Margin + PaddingFor this tutorial series I am explaining different elements you can create or modify with the help of CSS. The level of experience that is needed to be able to understand the tutorials can differ and will be in no order. How to: Margin + Padding2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
However I will try to explain the things as simple as possible. Upcoming questions should be left in a comment directly to this blog so that people with similar problems can look them up later as well.
The tutorial series is based on the gruze-structure of journals. If you are still using the old structure or have a journal installed that used it, things won’t work the same way like explained below.
For simple skins the old structure is fine, but the more features you add, the more I would recommend using the gruze-structure. You can look up the differences here: http://ginkgografix.deviantart.com/art/Old-vs-Gruze-Journals-112772369
It seems like a lot of people are struggling with the usage of margin and padding. In the end it doesn’t matter ho

Stop Using Subscript in Your LitOr, Why Tiny Text Is Bad.Stop Using Subscript in Your Lit2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
(FACT: It's not just because some of us have crappy vision.)
I know some of you like the effect, but here's the deal: do whatever you want on your own monitor and keep your hands off mine.
Did you know that, in Windows, holding Ctrl and moving the scroll wheel up or down changes font size? You do now, and it's not much harder to change zoom size on a Mac (I hear it is most likely cmd++ or cmd+- , cmd+0 reverts it to the original size). I know it's just as easy in Linux, anyway.
I already have my browser's text size display set to what I want, thank you very much.
Anyone who uses Word must be familiar with the concept of font size in points: 12pt Times New Roman, especially, when it comes to turning in essays for teachers. (And 13pt periods for those of you who couldn't hit that minimum page count )
Well, here's the deal: Web display doesn't work quite the same way. You can force all text to be 16
PE: Textured brushesThis article is an introduction to textured brushes in digital art painting. I'll cover making your own brushes as well as the use of textured brushes. You'll also find some great art and brush sets at the end of this article. This is my first time writing for projecteducate, so I hope you'll find this helpful!PE: Textured brushes2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Textured brush vs. texture
First of all, what is a textured brush? And why should you bother with it when you can just slap a nice texture over your painting to make it look more interesting?
Alright, let's start at the beginning. "Textured brush" is a brush created out of a texture, so basically a texture in brush-form. Whether it's made with help of a pre-existing image (see texture above) or some wild scribbling on your tablet (like the example brush above) doesn't matter. Texture + select + define brush = texture

My Photoshop Actions journal = closedWhat are Photoshop Actions? My Photoshop Actions journal = closed3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Photoshop Actions are the recordings of commands that can be applied to one or multiple images in Photoshop. When you press play, it applies these recorded commands. Think about changing the mood in a picture with various adjustment layers. Using an action can actually help you save a lot of time.
Which versions of Photoshop are lieveheersbeestje's actions compatible with?
All Photoshop CS versions, CS2 to CS6 Extended. My actions are not compatible with Photoshop Elements or other programs.
How can I download your exclusive actions?
You can download most of the actions at my DeviantART for free, it's easy and takes a few seconds. However I do have some exclusive actions as well, you need to pay with DeviantART points in order to get them. Want free points? Read more below in this journal.
30 points every week!
Every week I choose at least one artwork that used one of my actions. This artist will receive 30 points.
Ten Tips for Nature PhotographersThis article came about after a deviant specifically requested that we write ten clear, simple tips for Photographing Nature. Troubleshooting articles and information can be very useful, but sometimes breaking it down into manageable memorable chunks is so much easier. So without further ado please enjoy our Ten Tips for Nature Photographers!Ten Tips for Nature Photographers2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
1) Get into your environment
Yes, it's rhubarb. To be a true photographer, you must be at one with rhubarb.
When we talk about photographing Nature, we don't necessarily mean wide expansive rolling landscapes. Whilst they contain any number of elements that are nature focused and made up from natural resources - Nature Photography is about getting into your environment and getting up close and personal with these elements. So think of it like you are Photographing the components that make up that beautiful lan
Learning to draw with Loomis: art book featureIf you want to become a better artist and you find that your own "How to draw" books, or the tutorials on the internet are lacking in scope, then this article is for you. I'm going to talk to you about some of the best books on making art that have ever been written - and that's not an exaggeration.Learning to draw with Loomis: art book feature2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
These books were written around the WWII-era by a man called William Andrew Loomis. He was a very accomplished and widely published artist at the time, but what he's currently more well-known for is a series of art books he created during that time. These books have stood the test of time and their contents are still commonly used and recommended to art students of a wide range of skill levels, and if you're looking to improve your drawing skills, particulary faces and the human body, these books are a good place to start.
The major strength of his books is that they're not a step-by-step guide or tutorial on how to draw a specific picture, portrait or pose. Many art books fall into this ca

Photography Troubleshooting:How to Photograph FoodMany of us lament about a lack of subjects to Photograph - and almost just as many of us create something on a daily basis that with a bit of presentation, can look like a masterpiece. Food is one of the most accessible Photographic subjects and if you've no idea where to start, hopefully this article will give you a few pointers. Firstly, you don't need an expensive D-SLR in order to capture some of the food masterpieces you see around.Photography Troubleshooting:How to Photograph Food3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
The above was taken with a Sony Cybershot which is a good quality point and shoot camera. As you can see, the focus is crisp, the quality is good and the lighting is adequate. It works well - and it's easy enough to achieve whether you have a D-SLR or something smaller.
Before you start cooking - get prepared. It's the simplest easiest thing to say and you'll likely roll your eyes at such a mundane instruction but there have been many times when I've found mysel

Sans serif — Roman
In this article/tutorial I will show you how to design a typeface. I will cover the basics and show you how to design advanced letters as well. There is so much I can talk about though, so if people like this article I might expand on this with future articles and get more into detail. I will only cover the design though, so you will have to research how to do the spacing and programming and turn your typeface into a usable font—or wait until I might do an article on that as well, but I don’t have such an article planned anytime soon.
What will we design?
I will first show you how to design some basic letters for a geometric sans typeface like Futura, because it utilizes geometric shapes, which is always my starting point for every typeface regardless of style. O

Las Vegas deviantMEET Wrap-Up!Las Vegas deviantMEET Wrap-Up!2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Our first-ever deviantMEET in Las Vegas hit the jackpot!
On Sunday, December 1st, deviants were already lined up outside the doors at 5:00 PM, even though the event wasn't scheduled to start until 5:30! (A handful of amazingly dedicated super deviants arrived as early as 3:30 PM!) Far be it for us to wait to get the party started, so we opened the doors a little early, allowing the crowd to rush in. After signing our guestbook – we know, physical guestbooks are so Web 1.0, but they're great mementos! – our devious artists dispersed to play at the deviantART booth.
Stocked with six Intuos 5 Wacom tablets to play with, a 24-inch Cintiq, SketchBook Pro for sketching and painting, enough table seating for traditional drawing and portfolio review, and bags upon bags of free swag (including stress balls, deviantART Sharpies, and tons of free stickers), everyone found an awesome and creative way to spend their time.
Customizing Photoshop ShortcutsHandy Hints and TipsCustomizing Photoshop Shortcuts1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Photoshop keyboard shortcuts are a great feature that helps improve the efficiency of digital art. Sometimes, though, the Photoshop default ones aren't to your liking (wouldn't it be nice to be able to undo with 'ctrl+Z' instead of 'ctrl+alt+Z' every time?). Did you know you can customize your own keyboard shortcuts? Simply go to Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts. When you are done customizing to your heart's desires, remember to save the shortcuts to a new file. Do not override the Photoshop Default set!
