The librarian, known as Mr. Linden, was a cynic. He didn’t show it, though. He smiled at everyone, kindly asked how they were doing, and politely listened to their words. Those who knew him loved him. The lady at the coffee shop smiled at his entry and uttered a happy little “’Bye! See you tomorrow!” when he left. He was her favourite customer, he knew.
Sipping at the final half of his takeout coffee, Linden strode the short distance to his precious library. A young girl, eight or nine, pushed the door open and he saw—and immediately recognised—the volume she was carrying.
“Hey, are you sure you want to read that book?” he said quickly.
“Yes, why?” the girl asked. She was confused at the strange question asked by this unfamiliar man.
