ok, the "wet floor" effect is not really pretty.
it has been referred to as the new "drop shadow" and I personally compare it to "lens flare"

But putting it on a dry rough concrete runway is just stupid. there is nothing there that could reflect it!

well, sometimes you need to know what is overused and has become a cliché.

I suspect that you use the wet floor effect more out of habit than anything else, ether that or youre afraid to try out new things and just go with what you know and think looks good.

and not basing things on facts is all right and can look good, but you should have a reason for doing it and you should be able to see that it has been done on purpose, or else it may look just like a flaw or just stupid.

so what did you want to express with the non-reflective concrete that somehow reflects the type, but nothing else?

I agree with you but still, the person who made this is just trying the the techniques out of himself.
You should not be hard on him, and it will come by the time that he does it "right"..

So I should be soft and cozy and tell him that everything he makes is awesome, so that he never learns anything?

alot of pepole need to be told what has become a cliché. I suspect that even you do, seeing that you have the same ugly effect on your icon.
