I've recently fallen in love with cordyceps, which are probably the coolest thing ever as long as they don't decide to burst out of my body (I think this love began while reading Jeff Vandermeer's books, and if you don't know what cordryceps are: [link]). That being said, when I was watching planet earth this winter break and they had a whole section on cordryceps I pretty much peed my pants.
I introduced the idea of a made-up beatle being eaten by a mushroom to my illustration professor and she pretty much demanded that I do it for my next piece..so here it is.
Maybe we'll see some more of these little buggers and other strange animal and plant forms, just to prove that I can draw things that are not human (which I don't really do).
I love Jeff Vandermeer! All his stories are so wonderful and dreamlike. You should try drawing a gray cap, or something from the Veniss Underground universe. Have you read The Etched City by KJ Bishop? If you like Vandermeer, you'll probably like that.

Oh goodness, I love Jeff Vandermeer. This is a brilliant piece of art. I don't see nearly enough art of beetles. I think I'm going to have to watch you.
