Artist's Comments

I'm possibly going to put up a few more of these. I'll inevitably move a few to scraps, but keep my favorites for the gallery. =)

Again, took just over an hour, maybe 70 minutes. A study of a storm rolling over Kansas prairie. =)

Wow, I have to say, from a distance, your "Landscape Study" pictures look like photos. Even close up, the clouds look very realistic.

I'd give you some critiques if I could, but you've far surpassed my landscape drawing ability and knowledge. I think I could learn a few things from you, though. xD

Do you have any tips on doing backgrounds? I spend 2+ hours on some of my backgrounds and they turn out terrible. :<

Thanks. =)

I think the best thing you can do, is do landscape studies like me. One of the biggest things about landscapes is getting the color tones right. Having the grass too green or the sky too blue can kill an image.
That's what I've been focusing on the most in these. The colors. Notice how the drawings are far from precise, maybe even blurry. But the colors are close to the reference, and I get comments from people saying they look like photographs! =)

(and note, I don't use the eyedropper tool for these. :XD: I compare that to tracing.)

Also, observe your environment if you're outside. I know on my road trip last summer, I did that. Even sketched some scenes.

Landscapes can be pretty flexible drawing wise, so I think they're easier to learn than say...drawing mechanical stuff where everything has to be precise, like cars. =P If you can get a good knowledge of colors in landscapes, I think you're pretty much set!

I gotta tell you, I LOVE your landscapes. You have such a great, soft feel to your pictures.

This is fantastic. I actually can't find anything to critique in this picture. I love the texture of the clouds especially. You have a wonderful touch in your skies, in this picture and the last one equally. This is a great picture!

I may not be able to produce it, but by god I can tell you you're doing it wrong.

"Another fantastic person is the famous GearOtter. Check her out on deviantart.com, her art sucks dirt, but she has a posse almost as great as my own, a bunch of friends who suck up to her and get her page views. Go geary."
